1 Samuel 10-11

Saul Anointed King

10 (A)Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head (B)and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince[a] over (C)his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince[b] over his heritage. When you depart from me today, you will meet two men by (D)Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say to you, (E)‘The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now (F)your father has ceased to care about the donkeys and is anxious about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?”’ Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the (G)oak of Tabor. Three men (H)going up (I)to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand. After that you shall come to (J)Gibeath-elohim,[c] (K)where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down (L)from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. (M)Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, (N)and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. Now when (O)these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, (P)for God is with you. Then go down before me (Q)to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and (R)to sacrifice peace offerings. (S)Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.”

When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. 10 When they came to (T)Gibeah,[d] behold, a group of prophets met him, (U)and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? (V)Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 And a man of the place answered, (W)“And who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, (X)“Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.

14 (Y)Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” And he said, (Z)“To seek the donkeys. And when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.” 15 And Saul's uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16 And Saul said to his uncle, (AA)“He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.” But about the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel had spoken, he did not tell him anything.

Saul Proclaimed King

17 Now Samuel called the people together (AB)to the Lord (AC)at Mizpah. 18 And he said to the people of Israel, (AD)“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ 19 (AE)But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore (AF)present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”

20 Then Samuel (AG)brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its clans, and the clan of the Matrites was taken by lot;[e] and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 (AH)So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.” 23 Then they ran and took him from there. And when he stood among the people, (AI)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him (AJ)whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, (AK)“Long live the king!”

25 Then Samuel told the people (AL)the rights and duties of the kingship, and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home. 26 Saul also went to his home (AM)at Gibeah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some (AN)worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.

Saul Defeats the Ammonites

11 (AO)Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged (AP)Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, (AQ)“Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, (AR)that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus (AS)bring disgrace on all Israel.” The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days' respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.” When the messengers came to (AT)Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, (AU)and all the people wept aloud.

Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh. (AV)And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. He took a yoke of oxen (AW)and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, (AX)“Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out (AY)as one man. When he mustered them at (AZ)Bezek, (BA)the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have (BB)salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, (BC)“Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” 11 (BD)And the next day Saul put the people (BE)in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

The Kingdom Is Renewed

12 Then the people said to Samuel, (BF)“Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ (BG)Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13 But Saul said, (BH)“Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today (BI)the Lord has worked (BJ)salvation in Israel.” 14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” 15 So all the people went to (BK)Gilgal, and there they made Saul king (BL)before the Lord in Gilgal. There (BM)they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

John 6:43-71

43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me (A)draws him. And (B)I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, (C)‘And they will all be (D)taught by God.’ (E)Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 (F)not that anyone has seen the Father except (G)he who is from God; he (H)has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, (I)whoever believes has eternal life. 48 (J)I am the bread of life. 49 (K)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and (L)they died. 50 (M)This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it (N)and not die. 51 I am the living bread (O)that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give (P)for the life of the world is (Q)my flesh.”

52 The Jews then (R)disputed among themselves, saying, (S)“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (T)the Son of Man and drink his blood, you (U)have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (V)has eternal life, and (W)I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (X)abides in me, and I in him. 57 As (Y)the living Father (Z)sent me, and (AA)I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 (AB)This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread[a] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus[b] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught (AC)at Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 (AD)When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (AE)knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see (AF)the Son of Man (AG)ascending to (AH)where he was before? 63 (AI)It is the Spirit who gives life; (AJ)the flesh is no help at all. (AK)The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But (AL)there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus (AM)knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and (AN)who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you (AO)that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 (AP)After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to (AQ)the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (AR)the words of eternal life, 69 and (AS)we have believed, and have come to know, that (AT)you are (AU)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (AV)“Did I not choose you, (AW)the twelve? And yet one of you is (AX)a devil.” 71 He spoke of Judas (AY)the son of Simon Iscariot, for (AZ)he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

Psalm 107

Book Five

Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

107 (A)Oh give thanks to the Lord, (B)for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
Let (C)the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has (D)redeemed from trouble[a]
and (E)gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

Some (F)wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way (G)to a city to dwell in;
hungry and thirsty,
    their soul (H)fainted within them.
Then they (I)cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by (J)a straight way
    till they reached (K)a city to dwell in.
(L)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
For he (M)satisfies the longing soul,
    (N)and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

10 (O)Some sat in darkness and in (P)the shadow of death,
    prisoners in (Q)affliction and in irons,
11 for they (R)had rebelled against the words of God,
    and (S)spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
    they fell down, (T)with none to help.
13 (U)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of (V)darkness and the shadow of death,
    and (W)burst their bonds apart.
15 (X)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
16 For he (Y)shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.

17 Some were (Z)fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
18 (AA)they loathed any kind of food,
    and they (AB)drew near to (AC)the gates of death.
19 (AD)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
20 He (AE)sent out his word and (AF)healed them,
    and (AG)delivered them from their destruction.
21 (AH)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22 And let them (AI)offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and (AJ)tell of his deeds in (AK)songs of joy!

23 Some (AL)went down to the sea in ships,
    doing business on the great waters;
24 they saw the deeds of the Lord,
    his wondrous works in the deep.
25 For he (AM)commanded and (AN)raised the stormy wind,
    which lifted up the waves of the sea.
26 They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
    their courage (AO)melted away in their evil plight;
27 they reeled and (AP)staggered like drunken men
    and (AQ)were at their wits' end.[b]
28 (AR)Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
29 He (AS)made the storm be still,
    and the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad that the waters[c] were quiet,
    and he brought them to their desired haven.
31 (AT)Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
32 Let them (AU)extol him in (AV)the congregation of the people,
    and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33 He (AW)turns rivers into a desert,
    springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 (AX)a fruitful land into a salty waste,
    because of the evil of its inhabitants.
35 He (AY)turns a desert into pools of water,
    (AZ)a parched land into springs of water.
36 And there he lets the hungry dwell,
    and they establish (BA)a city to live in;
37 they sow fields and plant vineyards
    and get a fruitful yield.
38 (BB)By his blessing they multiply greatly,
    and he does not let their livestock diminish.

39 When they are diminished and brought low
    through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40 (BC)he pours contempt on princes
    and (BD)makes them wander (BE)in trackless wastes;
41 but (BF)he raises up the needy out of affliction
    and (BG)makes their families like flocks.
42 (BH)The upright see it and are glad,
    and (BI)all wickedness shuts its mouth.

43 (BJ)Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
    let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Proverbs 15:1-3

15 (A)A soft answer turns away wrath,
    but (B)a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,
    but (C)the mouths of fools pour out folly.
(D)The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
    keeping watch on the evil and the good.
