22 Now Eli was very old. He heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel(A) and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.(B) 23 He said to them, “Why are you doing these things? I have heard about your evil actions from all these people. 24 No, my sons, the report I hear from the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him, but if a man sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?”(C) But they would not listen to their father, since the Lord intended to kill them.(D) 26 By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men.(E)
27 A man of God came to Eli and said to him,(F) “This is what the Lord says: ‘Didn’t I reveal Myself to your ancestral house when it was in Egypt and belonged to Pharaoh’s palace?(G) 28 Out of all the tribes of Israel, I selected your house[a] to be priests, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence.(H) I also gave your house all the Israelite fire offerings. 29 Why, then, do all of you despise My sacrifices and offerings that I require at the place of worship?(I) You have honored your sons more than Me,(J) by making yourselves fat with the best part of all of the offerings of My people Israel.’
30 “Therefore, this is the declaration of the Lord, the God of Israel:
‘Although I said
your family and your ancestral house
would walk before Me forever,(K)
the Lord now says, “No longer!”
I will honor those who honor Me,(L)
but those who despise Me will be disgraced.(M)
31 “‘Look, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your ancestral family, so that none in your family will reach old age.(N) 32 You will see distress in the place of worship,(O) in spite of all that is good in Israel, and no one in your family will ever again reach old age.(P) 33 Any man from your family I do not cut off from My altar will bring grief[b] and sadness to you. All your descendants will die violently.[c][d] 34 This will be the sign that will come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas:(Q) both of them will die on the same day.(R)
35 “‘Then I will raise up a faithful priest(S) for Myself. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him,(T) and he will walk before My anointed one for all time.(U) 36 Anyone who is left in your family will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread. He will say: Please appoint me to some priestly office so I can have a piece of bread to eat.’”
Samuel’s Call
3 The boy Samuel served the Lord in Eli’s presence.(V) In those days the word of the Lord was rare and prophetic visions were not widespread.(W)
2 One day Eli, whose eyesight was failing,(X) was lying in his room. 3 Before the lamp of God had gone out,(Y) Samuel was lying down in the tabernacle of the Lord, where the ark of God was located.
4 Then the Lord called Samuel,[e] and he answered, “Here I am.” 5 He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
“I didn’t call,” Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
6 Once again the Lord called, “Samuel!”
Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
“I didn’t call, my son,” he replied. “Go back and lie down.”
7 Now Samuel had not yet experienced the Lord, because the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 Once again, for the third time, the Lord called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 He told Samuel, “Go and lie down. If He calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 The Lord came, stood there, and called as before, “Samuel, Samuel!”
Samuel responded, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.”
11 The Lord said to Samuel, “I am about to do something in Israel that everyone who hears about it will shudder.(Z) 12 On that day I will carry out against Eli everything I said about his family, from beginning to end.(AA) 13 I told him that I am going to judge his family forever because of the iniquity he knows about: his sons are defiling the sanctuary,[f] and he has not stopped them.(AB) 14 Therefore, I have sworn to Eli’s family: The iniquity of Eli’s family will never be wiped out by either sacrifice or offering.”(AC)
15 Samuel lay down until the morning; then he opened the doors of the Lord’s house. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”
“Here I am,” answered Samuel.
17 “What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked. “Don’t hide it from me. May God punish you and do so severely if you hide anything from me that He told you.”(AD) 18 So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli responded, “He is the Lord. He will do what He thinks is good.”[g](AE)
19 Samuel grew,(AF) and the Lord was with him,(AG) and He fulfilled everything Samuel prophesied.[h](AH) 20 All Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a confirmed prophet of the Lord.(AI) 21 The Lord continued to appear in Shiloh, because there He revealed Himself to Samuel by His word.(AJ) 4 1 And Samuel’s words came to all Israel.
The Ark Captured by the Philistines
Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and[i] camped at Ebenezer(AK) while the Philistines camped at Aphek.(AL) 2 The Philistines lined up in battle formation against Israel, and as the battle intensified, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about 4,000 men on the battlefield.
3 When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord let us be defeated today by the Philistines?(AM) Let’s bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh. Then it[j] will go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.”(AN) 4 So the people sent men to Shiloh to bring back the ark of the covenant of the Lord of Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.(AO) Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 When the ark of the covenant of the Lord entered the camp, all the Israelites raised such a loud shout that the ground shook.(AP)
6 The Philistines heard the sound of the war cry and asked, “What’s this loud shout in the Hebrews’ camp?” When the Philistines discovered that the ark of the Lord had entered the camp, 7 they panicked. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “Woe to us, nothing like this has happened before.[k] 8 Woe to us, who will rescue us from the hand of these magnificent gods? These are the gods that slaughtered the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9 Show some courage and be men, Philistines!(AQ) Otherwise, you’ll serve the Hebrews just as they served you.(AR) Now be men and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated,(AS) and each man fled to his tent.(AT) The slaughter was severe—30,000 of the Israelite foot soldiers fell. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(AU)
Eli’s Death and Ichabod’s Birth
12 That same day, a Benjaminite man ran(AV) from the battle and came to Shiloh. His clothes were torn,(AW) and there was dirt on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair beside the road watching,(AX) because he was anxious about the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the entire city cried out.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “Why this commotion?” The man quickly came and reported to Eli. 15 At that time Eli was 98 years old, and his gaze was fixed[l] because he couldn’t see.(AY)
16 The man said to Eli, “I’m the one who came from the battle.[m] I fled from there today.”
“What happened, my son?”(AZ) Eli asked.
17 The messenger answered, “Israel has fled from the Philistines, and also there was a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are both dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” 18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off the chair by the city gate,(BA) and since he was old and heavy, his neck broke and he died. Eli had judged Israel 40 years.
19 Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news about the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she collapsed and gave birth because her labor pains came on her. 20 As she was dying,[n] the women taking care of her said, “Don’t be afraid. You’ve given birth to a son!”(BB) But she did not respond or pay attention. 21 She named the boy Ichabod,[o] saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,”(BC) referring to the capture of the ark of God(BD) and to the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 “The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “because the ark of God has been captured.”
Life and Judgment
24 “I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life(A) and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.
25 “I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here,(B) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.(C) 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son(D) to have life in Himself. 27 And He has granted Him the right to pass judgment,(E) because He is the Son of Man.(F) 28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come out—those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgment.
30 “I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment(G) is righteous,(H) because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.(I)
Four Witnesses to Jesus
31 “If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.[a] 32 There is Another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives about Me is valid.[b](J) 33 You have sent messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth.(K) 34 I don’t receive man’s testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 John[c](L) was a burning and shining lamp,(M) and for a time you were willing to enjoy his light.(N)
36 “But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish.(O) These very works I am doing testify about Me that the Father has sent(P) Me. 37 The Father who sent Me has Himself testified(Q) about Me. You have not heard His voice at any time, and you haven’t seen His form.(R) 38 You don’t have His word living in you, because you don’t believe the One He sent. 39 You pore over[d] the Scriptures(S) because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me.(T) 40 And you are not willing(U) to come to Me(V) so that you may have life.
41 “I do not accept glory(W) from men, 42 but I know you—that you have no love for God(X) within you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name,(Y) yet you don’t accept Me.(Z) If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe? While accepting glory from one another, you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only(AA) God.(AB) 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(AC) on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me. 47 But if you don’t believe his writings,(AD) how will you believe My words?”(AE)

Israel’s Unfaithfulness to God
1 Hallelujah!
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
His faithful love endures forever.(A)
2 Who can declare the Lord’s mighty acts
or proclaim all the praise due Him?(B)
3 How happy are those who uphold justice,
who practice righteousness at all times.(C)
4 Remember me, Lord,
when You show favor to Your people.(D)
Come to me with Your salvation
5 so that I may enjoy the prosperity
of Your chosen ones,
rejoice in the joy of Your nation,
and boast about Your heritage.(E)
6 Both we and our fathers have sinned;
we have done wrong and have acted wickedly.(F)
7 Our fathers in Egypt did not grasp
the significance of Your wonderful works
or remember Your many acts of faithful love;
instead, they rebelled by the sea—the Red Sea.(G)
8 Yet He saved them because of His name,
to make His power known.(H)
9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;
He led them through the depths as through a desert.(I)
10 He saved them from the hand of the adversary;
He redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.(J)
