Genesis 18:16-19:38

Abraham Pleads for Sodom

16 When the men got up to leave,[a] they looked out over[b] Sodom. (Now[c] Abraham was walking with them to see them on their way.)[d] 17 Then the Lord said, “Should I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?[e] 18 After all, Abraham[f] will surely become[g] a great and powerful nation, and all the nations on the earth may receive blessing[h] through him. 19 I have chosen him[i] so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep[j] the way of the Lord by doing[k] what is right and just. Then the Lord will give[l] to Abraham what he promised[m] him.”

20 So the Lord said, “The outcry against[n] Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so blatant[o] 21 that I must go down[p] and see if they are as wicked as the outcry suggests.[q] If not,[r] I want to know.”

22 The two men turned[s] and headed[t] toward Sodom, but Abraham was still standing before the Lord.[u] 23 Abraham approached and said, “Will you really sweep away the godly along with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty godly people in the city? Will you really wipe it out and not spare[v] the place for the sake of the fifty godly people who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the godly with the wicked, treating the godly and the wicked alike! Far be it from you! Will not the judge[w] of the whole earth do what is right?”[x]

26 So the Lord replied, “If I find in the city of Sodom fifty godly people, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

27 Then Abraham asked, “Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord[y] (although I am but dust and ashes),[z] 28 what if there are five less than the fifty godly people? Will you destroy[aa] the whole city because five are lacking?”[ab] He replied, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

29 Abraham[ac] spoke to him again,[ad] “What if forty are found there?” He replied, “I will not do it for the sake of the forty.”

30 Then Abraham[ae] said, “May the Lord not be angry[af] so that I may speak![ag] What if thirty are found there?” He replied, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

31 Abraham[ah] said, “Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty are found there?” He replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”

32 Finally Abraham[ai] said, “May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”

33 The Lord went on his way[aj] when he had finished speaking[ak] to Abraham. Then Abraham returned home.[al]

The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

19 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening while[am] Lot was sitting in the city’s gateway.[an] When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face toward the ground.

He said, “Here, my lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house. Stay the night[ao] and wash your feet. Then you can be on your way early in the morning.”[ap] “No,” they replied, “we’ll spend the night in the town square.”[aq]

But he urged[ar] them persistently, so they turned aside with him and entered his house. He prepared a feast for them, including bread baked without yeast, and they ate. Before they could lie down to sleep,[as] all the men—both young and old, from every part of the city of Sodom—surrounded the house.[at] They shouted to Lot,[au] “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so we can take carnal knowledge of[av] them!”

Lot went outside to them, shutting the door behind him. He said, “No, my brothers! Don’t act so wickedly![aw] Look, I have two daughters who have never been intimate with[ax] a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do to them whatever you please.[ay] Only don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection[az] of my roof.”[ba]

“Out of our way!”[bb] they cried, “This man came to live here as a foreigner,[bc] and now he dares to judge us![bd] We’ll do more harm[be] to you than to them!” They kept pressing in on Lot[bf] until they were close enough[bg] to break down the door.

10 So the men inside[bh] reached out[bi] and pulled Lot back into the house[bj] as they shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, from the youngest to the oldest,[bk] with blindness. The men outside[bl] wore themselves out trying to find the door. 12 Then the two visitors[bm] said to Lot, “Who else do you have here?[bn] Do you have[bo] any sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or other relatives in the city?[bp] Get them out of this[bq] place 13 because we are about to destroy[br] it. The outcry against this place[bs] is so great before the Lord that he[bt] has sent us to destroy it.”

14 Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who were going to marry his daughters.[bu] He said, “Quick, get out of this place because the Lord is about to destroy[bv] the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was ridiculing them.[bw]

15 At dawn[bx] the angels hurried Lot along, saying, “Get going! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here,[by] or else you will be destroyed when the city is judged!”[bz] 16 When Lot[ca] hesitated, the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters because the Lord had compassion on them.[cb] They led them away and placed them[cc] outside the city. 17 When they had brought them outside, they[cd] said, “Run[ce] for your lives! Don’t look[cf] behind you or stop anywhere in the valley![cg] Escape to the mountains or you will be destroyed!”

18 But Lot said to them, “No, please, Lord![ch] 19 Your[ci] servant has found favor with you,[cj] and you have shown me great[ck] kindness[cl] by sparing[cm] my life. But I am not able to escape to the mountains because[cn] this disaster will overtake[co] me and I’ll die.[cp] 20 Look, this town[cq] over here is close enough to escape to, and it’s just a little one.[cr] Let me go there.[cs] It’s just a little place, isn’t it?[ct] Then I’ll survive.”[cu]

21 “Very well,” he replied,[cv] “I will grant this request too[cw] and will not overthrow[cx] the town you mentioned. 22 Run there quickly,[cy] for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” (This incident explains why the town was called Zoar.)[cz]

23 The sun had just risen[da] over the land as Lot reached Zoar.[db] 24 Then the Lord rained down[dc] sulfur and fire[dd] on Sodom and Gomorrah. It was sent down from the sky by the Lord.[de] 25 So he overthrew those cities and all that region,[df] including all the inhabitants of the cities and the vegetation that grew from the ground.[dg] 26 But Lot’s[dh] wife looked back longingly[di] and was turned into a pillar of salt.

27 Abraham got up early in the morning and went[dj] to the place where he had stood before the Lord. 28 He looked out toward[dk] Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of that region.[dl] As he did so, he saw the smoke rising up from the land like smoke from a furnace.[dm]

29 So when God destroyed[dn] the cities of the region,[do] God honored[dp] Abraham’s request. He removed Lot[dq] from the midst of the destruction when he destroyed[dr] the cities Lot had lived in.

30 Lot went up from Zoar with his two daughters and settled in the mountains because he was afraid to live in Zoar. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters. 31 Later the older daughter said[ds] to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the country[dt] to sleep with us,[du] the way everyone does. 32 Come, let’s make our father drunk with wine[dv] so we can go to bed with[dw] him and preserve[dx] our family line through our father.”[dy]

33 So that night they made their father drunk with wine,[dz] and the older daughter[ea] came in and went to bed with[eb] her father. But he was not aware of when she lay down with him or when she got up. 34 So in the morning the older daughter[ec] said to the younger, “Since I went to bed with[ed] my father last night, let’s make him drunk[ee] again tonight. Then you go in and go to bed with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”[ef] 35 So they made their father drunk[eg] that night as well, and the younger one came and went to bed with him.[eh] But he was not aware of when she lay down with him or when she got up.

36 In this way both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter[ei] gave birth to a son and named him Moab.[ej] He is the ancestor of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also gave birth to a son and named him Ben Ammi.[ek] He is the ancestor of the Ammonites of today.

Matthew 6:25-7:14

Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry[a] about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing? 26 Look at the birds in the sky:[b] They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds[c] them. Aren’t you more valuable[d] than they are? 27 And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life?[e] 28 Why do you worry about clothing? Think about how the flowers[f] of the field grow; they do not work[g] or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these! 30 And if this is how God clothes the wild grass,[h] which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven,[i] won’t he clothe you even more,[j] you people of little faith? 31 So then, don’t worry saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the unconverted[k] pursue these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But above all pursue his kingdom[l] and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 So then, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.[m]

Do Not Judge

“Do not judge so that you will not be judged.[n] For by the standard you judge you will be judged, and the measure you use will be the measure you receive.[o] Why[p] do you see the speck[q] in your brother’s eye, but fail to see[r] the beam of wood[s] in your own? Or how can you say[t] to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ while there is a beam in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give what is holy to dogs or throw your pearls before pigs; otherwise they will trample them under their feet and turn around and tear you to pieces.[u]

Ask, Seek, Knock

“Ask[v] and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door[w] will be opened for you. For everyone who asks[x] receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Is[y] there anyone among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?[z] 11 If you then, although you are evil,[aa] know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts[ab] to those who ask him! 12 In[ac] everything, treat others as you would want them[ad] to treat you,[ae] for this fulfills[af] the law and the prophets.

The Narrow Gate

13 “Enter[ag] through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 How[ah] narrow is the gate and difficult the way that leads to life,[ai] and there are few who find it!

Psalm 8

Psalm 8[a]

For the music director, according to the gittith style;[b] a psalm of David.

O Lord, our Lord,[c]
how magnificent[d] is your reputation[e] throughout the earth!
You reveal your majesty in the heavens above.[f]
From the mouths of children and nursing babies
you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries,[g]
so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy.[h]
When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made,
and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,[i]
Of what importance is the human race,[j] that you should notice[k] them?
Of what importance is mankind,[l] that you should pay attention to them?[m]
You made them[n] a little less than[o] the heavenly beings.[p]
You crowned mankind[q] with honor and majesty.[r]
you appoint them to rule over your creation;[s]
you have placed[t] everything under their authority,[u]
including all the sheep and cattle,
as well as the wild animals,[v]
the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that moves through the currents[w] of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,[x]
how magnificent[y] is your reputation[z] throughout the earth![aa]

Proverbs 2:6-15

For[a] the Lord gives[b] wisdom,
and from his mouth[c] comes[d] knowledge and understanding.
He stores up[e] effective counsel[f] for the upright,[g]
and is like[h] a shield[i] for those who live[j] with integrity,[k]
to guard[l] the paths of the righteous[m]
and to protect[n] the way of his pious ones.[o]
Then you will understand[p] righteousness and justice
and equity—every[q] good[r] way.[s]
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,[t]
and moral knowledge[u] will be attractive[v] to you.[w]
11 Discretion[x] will protect you,[y]
understanding will guard you,
12 to deliver[z] you from the way of the wicked,[aa]
from those[ab] speaking perversity,[ac]
13 who leave[ad] the upright[ae] paths
to walk on the dark[af] ways,
14 who delight[ag] in doing[ah] evil,[ai]
they rejoice in perverse evil;[aj]
15 whose paths[ak] are morally crooked,[al]
and who are devious[am] in their ways;
