Genesis 5-7

Descendants of Adam

This is the book of the generations of Adam. On the day when God created man, He made him (A)in the likeness of God. He created them (B)male and female, and He (C)blessed them and named them “mankind” on the day when they were created.

When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. Then the days of Adam after he fathered Seth were eight hundred years, and he fathered other sons and daughters. So all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.

Now Seth lived 105 years, and fathered Enosh. Then Seth lived 807 years after he fathered Enosh, and he fathered other sons and daughters. So all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.

Now Enosh lived ninety years, and fathered Kenan. 10 Then Enosh lived 815 years after he fathered Kenan, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.

12 Now Kenan lived seventy years, and fathered Mahalalel. 13 Then Kenan lived 840 years after he fathered Mahalalel, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

15 Now Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and fathered Jared. 16 Then Mahalalel lived 830 years after he fathered Jared, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.

18 Now Jared lived 162 years, and fathered Enoch. 19 Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he fathered Enoch, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.

21 Now Enoch lived sixty-five years, and fathered Methuselah. 22 Then Enoch (D)walked with God three hundred years after he fathered Methuselah, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 (E)Enoch walked with God; and he was [a]not, for God (F)took him.

25 Now Methuselah lived 187 years, and fathered Lamech. 26 Then Methuselah lived 782 years after he fathered Lamech, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 27 So all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

28 Now Lamech lived 182 years, and fathered a son. 29 And he named him Noah, saying, “This one will give us comfort from our work and from the hard labor of our hands caused by (G)the ground which the Lord has cursed.” 30 Then Lamech lived 595 years after he fathered Noah, and he fathered other sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

32 Now after Noah was (H)five hundred years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The Corruption of Mankind

Now it came about, when mankind began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were [b]beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, “(I)My Spirit will not [c]remain with man forever, [d](J)because he is also flesh; [e]nevertheless his days shall be 120 years.” The [f](K)Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of mankind, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of mankind was great on the earth, and that (L)every intent of the thoughts of [g]their hearts was only evil continually. So (M)the Lord was sorry that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was (N)grieved [h]in His heart. Then the Lord said, “(O)I will wipe out mankind whom I have created from the face of the land; mankind, and animals as well, and crawling things, and the birds of the sky. For (P)I am sorry that I have made them.” But (Q)Noah (R)found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a (S)righteous man, [i](T)blameless in his generation. Noah (U)walked with God. 10 And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 Now the earth was (V)corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was (W)filled with violence. 12 And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for [j](X)humanity had corrupted its way upon the earth.

13 Then God said to Noah, “(Y)The end of [k]humanity has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of [l]people; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark of [m]gopher wood; you shall make the ark with compartments, and [n]cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be [o]three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a [p]window for the ark, and finish it to a [q]cubit from [r]the top; and put the door of the ark on the side; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 Now behold, (Z)I Myself am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which there is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. 18 But I will establish (AA)My covenant with you; and (AB)you shall enter the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 (AC)And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 (AD)Of the birds according to their kind, and of the animals according to their kind, of every crawling thing of the ground according to its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 As for you, take for yourself some of every (AE)food that is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and them.” 22 (AF)So Noah did these things; according to everything that God had commanded him, so he did.

The Flood

Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be (AG)righteous before Me in this generation. You shall take [s]with you [t]seven pairs of every (AH)clean animal, a male and his female; and two of the animals that are not clean, a male and his female; also of the birds of the sky, [u]seven pairs, male and female, to keep their [v]offspring alive on the face of all the earth. For after (AI)seven more days, I will send rain on the earth for (AJ)forty days and forty nights; and I will wipe out from the face of the land (AK)every living thing that I have made.” So (AL)Noah acted in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded him.

Now Noah was (AM)six hundred years old when the flood of water [w]came upon the earth. Then (AN)Noah and his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the waters of the flood. (AO)Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that crawls on the ground, they all went into the ark to Noah [x]by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 Now it came about after (AP)the seven days, that the waters of the flood [y]came upon the earth. 11 In the (AQ)six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all (AR)the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the [z]floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 (AS)The rain [aa]fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

13 On this very same day (AT)Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every animal according to its kind, and all the livestock according to [ab]their kind, and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind, [ac]all sorts of birds. 15 So they went into the ark to Noah, (AU)by twos of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed the door behind him.

17 Then the flood [ad]came upon the earth for (AV)forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth. 18 The water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark [ae]floated on the [af]surface of the water. 19 And the water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains [ag]everywhere under the heavens were covered. 20 The water prevailed [ah]fifteen cubits higher, (AW)and the mountains were covered. 21 So (AX)all [ai]creatures that moved on the earth perished: birds, livestock, animals, and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind; 22 of all that was on the dry land, all (AY)in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. 23 So He wiped out [aj]every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from mankind to animals, to crawling things, and the birds of the sky, and they were wiped out from the earth; and only (AZ)Noah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark. 24 (BA)The water prevailed upon the earth for 150 days.

Matthew 3:7-4:11

But when he saw many of the (A)Pharisees and (B)Sadducees coming for [a]baptism, he said to them, “You [b](C)offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from (D)the wrath to come? (E)Therefore produce fruit (F)consistent with repentance; and do not assume that you can say to yourselves, ‘(G)We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you that God is able, from these stones, to raise up children for Abraham. 10 And the (H)axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore, (I)every tree that does not bear good fruit is being cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 “As for me, (J)I baptize you [c]with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; (K)He will baptize you [d]with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His (L)winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will (M)gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the (N)chaff with (O)unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 (P)Then Jesus *arrived (Q)from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?” 15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us (R)to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *allowed Him. 16 After He was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and [e](S)he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and [f]settling on Him, 17 and behold, a voice from the heavens said, “(T)This is [g]My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

(U)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (V)to be tempted by the devil. And after He had (W)fasted for forty days and forty nights, He [h]then became hungry. And (X)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (Y)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written: ‘(Z)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil *took Him along into (AA)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and he *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written:

(AB)He will give His angels orders concerning You’;

and

On their hands they will lift You up,
So that You do not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, [i]On the other hand, it is written: ‘(AC)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

(AD)Again, the devil *took Him along to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, “(AE)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [j]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘(AF)You shall worship the Lord your God, and [k]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (AG)angels came and began to serve Him.

Psalm 3

Morning Prayer of Trust in God.

A Psalm of David, when [a]he fled from his son Absalom.

Lord, how (A)my enemies have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
Many are saying of my soul,
“There is no (B)salvation for him in God.” Selah

But You, Lord, are (C)a shield around me,
My (D)glory, and the One who (E)lifts my head.
I was crying out to the Lord with my voice,
And He (F)answered me from (G)His holy [b]mountain. Selah
[c]I (H)lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
I will (I)not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have (J)set themselves against me all around.

(K)Arise, Lord; (L)save me, my God!
For You [d]have (M)struck all my enemies on the [e]cheek;
You [f]have (N)shattered the teeth of the wicked.
[g](O)Salvation belongs to the Lord;
May Your (P)blessing [h]be upon Your people! Selah

Proverbs 1:10-19

10 My son, if sinners (A)entice you,
(B)Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let’s (C)lie in wait for blood,
Let’s (D)ambush the innocent without cause;
12 Let’s (E)swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, like those who (F)go down to the pit;
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with plunder;
14 Throw in your lot [a]with us;
We will all have one money bag,”
15 My son, (G)do not walk on the way with them.
(H)Keep your feet from their path,
16 For (I)their feet run to evil,
And they are quick to shed blood.
17 Indeed, it is [b]useless to spread the baited net
In the sight of any [c]bird;
18 But they (J)lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.
19 Such are the ways of everyone who (K)makes unjust gain;
It takes away the life of its possessors.
