2 Samuel 19:11-20:13

11 Then King David sent word to (A)Zadok and Abiathar the priests, saying, “Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, ‘Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house, since the word of all Israel has come to the king, even to his house? 12 You are my brothers; (B)you are my bone and my flesh. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?’ 13 And say to (C)Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? (D)May God do so to me, and more so, if you will not be (E)commander of the army [a]for me continually, (F)in place of Joab.’” 14 So he turned the hearts of all the men of Judah (G)as one man, so that they sent word to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.” 15 The king then returned and came as far as the Jordan. And the men of Judah came to (H)Gilgal in order to go to meet the king, to escort the king across the Jordan.

16 Then (I)Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite who was from Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David. 17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and (J)Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they rushed to the Jordan before the king. 18 Then they crossed the shallow places repeatedly to bring over the king’s household, and to do what was good in his sight. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king as he was about to cross the Jordan. 19 And he said to the king, “(K)May my lord not consider me guilty, nor call to mind what your servant did wrong on the day when my lord the king went out from Jerusalem, so that the king would [b]take it to heart. 20 For your servant knows that I have sinned; so behold, I have come today, (L)the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.” 21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah responded, “(M)Should Shimei not be put to death for this, (N)the fact that he cursed the Lords anointed?” 22 David then said, “(O)What [c]is there between you and me, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be an adversary to me today? (P)Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? For do I not know that I am king over Israel today?” 23 So the king said to Shimei, “(Q)You shall not die.” The king also swore to him.

24 Then (R)Mephibosheth the [d]grandson of Saul came down to meet the king; but (S)he had neither [e]tended to his feet, nor [f]trimmed his mustache, nor (T)washed his clothes since the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace. 25 And it was when he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, “(U)Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?” 26 So he said, “My lord the king, my servant betrayed me; for your servant said, ‘I will [g]saddle the donkey for myself so that I may ride on it and go with the king,’ (V)since your servant cannot walk. 27 Furthermore, (W)he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is (X)like the angel of God, therefore do what is good in your sight. 28 For (Y)all my father’s household was only people worthy of death to my lord the king; (Z)yet you placed your servant among those who ate at your own table. So what right do I still have, that I should [h]complain anymore to the king?” 29 So the king said to him, “Why do you still speak of your affairs? I have [i]decided, ‘You and Ziba shall divide the land.’” 30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Let him even take it all, since my lord the king has come safely to his own house.”

31 Now (AA)Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim; and he went on to the Jordan with the king to [j]escort him over the Jordan. 32 Barzillai was very old: eighty years old; and he had (AB)provided the king food while he stayed in Mahanaim, for he was a very great man. 33 So the king said to Barzillai, “You cross over with me, and I will provide you food in Jerusalem with me.” 34 But Barzillai said to the king, “(AC)How long [k]do I still have to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? 35 I am [l]now (AD)eighty years old. Can I distinguish between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Or can I still hear (AE)the voice of men and women singing? (AF)Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king? 36 Your servant would merely cross over the Jordan with the king. So why should the king compensate me with this reward? 37 Please let your servant return, so that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. However, here is your servant (AG)Chimham; let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.” 38 And the king answered, “Chimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him what is good in your sight; and whatever you [m]require of me, I will do for you.” 39 All the people crossed over the Jordan and the king crossed too. The king then (AH)kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his place.

40 Now the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah and also (AI)half the people of Israel [n]accompanied the king. 41 And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “(AJ)Why have our brothers, (AK)the men of Judah, abducted you and brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him, over the Jordan?” 42 Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because (AL)the king is a close relative to [o]us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all [p]at the king’s expense, or has anything been taken for us?” 43 But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, “[q](AM)We have ten parts in the king, therefore [r]we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat [s]us with contempt? Was it not [t]our [u]advice first to bring back [v]our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.

Sheba’s Revolt

20 Now (AN)a worthless man happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of (AO)Bichri, a Benjaminite; and he blew the trumpet and said,

(AP)We have no share in David,
Nor do we have an inheritance in (AQ)the son of Jesse;
(AR)Every man to his tents, Israel!”

So all the men of Israel [w]withdrew from following David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah [x]remained loyal to their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

Then David came to his house in Jerusalem, and (AS)the king took the ten women, the concubines whom he had left behind to take care of the house, and put them in custody and provided them with food, but did not [y]have relations with them. So they were locked up until the day of their death, living as widows.

Now the king said to (AT)Amasa, “Summon the men of Judah for me within three days, and be present here yourself.” So Amasa went to summon the men of Judah, but he was (AU)delayed longer than the set time which he had designated for him. And David said to (AV)Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom; (AW)take your lord’s servants and pursue him, so that he does not find for himself fortified cities and escape from our sight.” So Joab’s men went out after him, (AX)along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the warriors; and they left Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. When they were at the large stone which is in (AY)Gibeon, Amasa came [z]to meet them. Now Joab was dressed in his military attire, and over it he had a belt with a sword in its sheath strapped on at his waist; and as he went forward, it fell out. And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it going well for you, my brother?” And (AZ)Joab took hold of Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

Amasa Murdered

10 But Amasa was not on guard against the sword which was in Joab’s hand, so (BA)he struck him in the belly with it and spilled out his intestines on the ground, and did not strike him again, and he died. Then Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 11 Now one of Joab’s young men stood by him and said, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David, (BB)follow Joab!” 12 But Amasa was wallowing in his own blood in the middle of the road. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa from the road to the field and threw a garment over him when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

Revolt Put Down

13 As soon as he was removed from the road, all the men went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

John 21

Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee

21 After these things Jesus [a](A)revealed Himself (B)again to the disciples at the (C)Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way: Simon Peter, (D)Thomas who was called [b]Didymus, (E)Nathanael of (F)Cana in Galilee, (G)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and (H)that night they caught nothing.

But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not (I)know that it was Jesus. So Jesus *said to them, “Children, (J)you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, (K)Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish. (L)Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about [c]two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish.

So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal (M)fire already [d]made and (N)fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the (O)fish which you have now caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.

Jesus Provides

12 Jesus *said to them, “Come and have (P)breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to inquire of Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus *came and *took (Q)the bread and *gave it to them, and the (R)fish likewise. 14 This was now the (S)third time that Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.

The Love Question

15 Now when they had (T)finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you [e](U)love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [f]love You.” He *said to him, “Tend (V)My lambs.” 16 He *said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you [g]love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [h]love You.” He *said to him, (W)Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you [i]love Me?” Peter was [j]hurt because He said to him (X)the third time, “Do you [k]love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, (Y)You know all things; You know that I [l]love You.” Jesus *said to him, (Z)Tend My sheep.

Our Times Are in His Hand

18 Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.” 19 Now He said this, (AA)indicating by (AB)what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had said this, He *said to him, (AC)Follow Me!”

20 Peter turned around and *saw the (AD)disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had (AE)leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” 21 So Peter, upon seeing him, *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain (AF)until I come, what is that to you? You (AG)follow Me!” 23 Therefore this [m]account went out among (AH)the brothers, that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain (AI)until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (AJ)is testifying about these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

25 But there are also (AK)many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were written in detail, I expect that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

Psalm 120

Prayer for Rescue from the Treacherous.

A Song of [a]Ascents.

120 (A)I cried to the Lord in my trouble,
And He answered me.
Rescue my soul, Lord, from (B)lying lips,
From a (C)deceitful tongue.
What will He give to you, and what more will He do to you,
You (D)deceitful tongue?
(E)Sharp arrows of the warrior,
With the burning (F)coals of the broom tree!

Woe to me, for I reside in (G)Meshech,
For I have settled among the (H)tents of (I)Kedar!
Too long has my soul had its dwelling
With those who (J)hate peace.
I (K)am for peace, but when I speak,
They are (L)for war.

Proverbs 16:16-17

16 How much (A)better it is to get wisdom than gold!
And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver.
17 The (B)highway of the upright is to turn away from evil;
One who watches his way protects his [a]life.
