37 My heart(A) pounds at this
and leaps from my chest.[a]
2 Just listen to His thunderous voice
and the rumbling that comes from His mouth.
3 He lets it loose beneath the entire sky;
His lightning to the ends(B) of the earth.
4 Then there comes a roaring sound;
God thunders(C) with His majestic voice.
He does not restrain the lightning
when His rumbling voice is heard.
5 God thunders marvelously with His voice;
He does great things that we cannot comprehend.
6 For He says to the snow,(D) “Fall to the earth,”
and the torrential rains, His mighty torrential rains,
7 serve as His sign to all mankind,
so that all men may know His work.
8 The wild animals enter their lairs
and stay in their dens.(E)
9 The windstorm comes from its chamber,
and the cold from the driving north winds.
10 Ice is formed by the breath of God,(F)
and watery expanses are frozen.
11 He saturates clouds with moisture;(G)
He scatters His lightning through them.
12 They swirl about,
turning round and round at His direction,
accomplishing everything He commands them
over the surface of the inhabited world.
13 He causes this to happen for punishment,
for His land, or for His faithful love.
14 Listen to this, Job.
Stop and consider God’s wonders.
15 Do you know how God directs His clouds
or makes their lightning flash?
16 Do you understand how the clouds float,
those wonderful works of Him who has perfect knowledge?
17 You whose clothes get hot
when the south wind brings calm to the land,
18 can you help God spread out the skies
as hard as a cast metal mirror?
19 Teach us what we should say to Him;(H)
we cannot prepare our case because of our darkness.
20 Should He be told that I want to speak?
Can a man speak when he is confused?
21 Now men cannot even look at the sun
when it is in the skies,
after a wind has swept through and cleared them away.
22 Yet out of the north He comes, shrouded in a golden glow;
awesome(I) majesty surrounds Him.
23 The Almighty—we cannot reach Him—
He is exalted in power!
He will not oppress justice and abundant righteousness,
24 Therefore, men fear Him.
He does not look favorably on any who are wise(J) in heart.
The Lord Speaks
38 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind.(K) He said:
2 Who is this who obscures My counsel
with ignorant words?(L)
3 Get ready to answer Me like a man;
when I question(M) you, you will inform Me.
4 Where were you when I established(N) the earth?
Tell Me, if you have[b] understanding.
5 Who fixed its dimensions? Certainly you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 What supports its foundations?
Or who laid its cornerstone
7 while the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God(O) shouted for joy?
8 Who enclosed the sea behind doors
when it burst from the womb,
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and thick darkness its blanket,[c](P)
10 when I determined its boundaries[d]
and put its bars and doors in place,
11 when I declared: “You may come this far, but no farther;
your proud waves stop here”?
12 Have you ever in your life commanded the morning
or assigned the dawn its place,
13 so it may seize the edges of the earth
and shake the wicked out of it?
14 The earth is changed as clay is by a seal;
its hills stand out like the folds of a garment.
15 Light[e] is withheld from the wicked,
and the arm raised in violence is broken.
16 Have you traveled to the sources of the sea
or walked in the depths of the oceans?
17 Have the gates(Q) of death been revealed to you?
Have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
18 Have you comprehended the extent of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this.
19 Where is the road to the home of light?
Do you know where darkness lives,
20 so you can lead it back to its border?
Are you familiar with the paths to its home?
21 Don’t you know? You were already born;(R)
you have lived so long![f]
22 Have you entered the place where the snow is stored?
Or have you seen the storehouses of hail,(S)
23 which I hold in reserve for times of trouble,
for the day of warfare and battle?(T)
24 What road leads to the place where light is dispersed?[g]
Where is the source of the east wind that spreads across the earth?
25 Who cuts a channel for the flooding rain
or clears the way for lightning,
26 to bring rain on an uninhabited land,
on a desert with no human life,[h]
27 to satisfy the parched wasteland
and cause the grass to sprout?(U)
28 Does the rain have a father?
Who fathered the drops of dew?(V)
29 Whose womb did the ice come from?
Who gave birth to the frost of heaven
30 when water becomes as hard as stone,[i]
and the surface of the watery depths is frozen?(W)
31 Can you fasten the chains of the Pleiades
or loosen the belt of Orion?
32 Can you bring out the constellations[j] in their season
and lead the Bear[k] and her cubs?(X)
33 Do you know the laws(Y) of heaven?
Can you impose its[l] authority on earth?
34 Can you command[m] the clouds
so that a flood of water covers you?(Z)
35 Can you send out lightning(AA) bolts, and they go?
Do they report to you: “Here we are”?
36 Who put wisdom(AB) in the heart[n]
or gave the mind understanding?
37 Who has the wisdom to number the clouds?
Or who can tilt the water jars of heaven
38 when the dust hardens like cast metal
and the clods of dirt stick together?
39 Can you hunt prey for a lioness
or satisfy the appetite of young lions(AC)
40 when they crouch in their dens
and lie in wait within their lairs?
41 Who provides the raven’s food(AD)
when its young cry out to God
and wander about for lack of food?
39 Do you know when mountain goats give birth?
Have you watched the deer in labor?
2 Can you count the months they are pregnant[o]
so you can know the time they give birth?
3 They crouch down to give birth to their young;
they deliver their newborn.[p]
4 Their offspring are healthy and grow up in the open field.
They leave and do not return.[q]
5 Who set the wild donkey free?
Who released the swift donkey from its harness?
6 I made the wilderness(AE) its home,
and the salty(AF) wasteland its dwelling.
7 It scoffs at the noise of the village
and never hears the shouts of a driver.(AG)
8 It roams the mountains for its pastureland,
searching for anything green.
9 Would the wild ox be willing to serve you?
Would it spend the night by your feeding trough?
10 Can you hold the wild ox(AH) to a furrow by its harness?
Will it plow the valleys behind you?
11 Can you depend on it because its strength is great?
Would you leave it to do your hard work?
12 Can you trust the wild ox to harvest your grain
and bring it to your threshing floor?
13 The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully,
but are her feathers and plumage like the stork’s?[r](AI)
14 She abandons her eggs on the ground
and lets them be warmed in the sand.
15 She forgets that a foot may crush them
or that some wild animal may trample them.
16 She treats her young harshly, as if they were not her own,
with no fear that her labor may have been in vain.
17 For God has deprived her of wisdom;
He has not endowed her with understanding.(AJ)
18 When she proudly[s] spreads her wings,
she laughs at the horse and its rider.
19 Do you give strength to the horse?
Do you adorn his neck with a mane?[t]
20 Do you make him leap like a locust?
His proud snorting fills one with terror.
21 He paws[u] in the valley and rejoices in his strength;
He charges into battle.[v]
22 He laughs at fear, since he is afraid of nothing;
he does not run from the sword.
23 A quiver rattles at his side,
along with a flashing spear and a lance.[w]
24 He charges ahead[x] with trembling rage;
he cannot stand still at the trumpet’s sound.
25 When the trumpet blasts, he snorts defiantly.[y]
He smells the battle from a distance;
he hears the officers’ shouts and the battle cry.
26 Does the hawk take flight by your understanding
and spread its wings to the south?
27 Does the eagle soar at your command
and make its nest(AK) on high?
28 It lives on a cliff where it spends the night;
its stronghold is on a rocky crag.
29 From there it searches for prey;(AL)
its eyes penetrate the distance.
30 Its brood gulps down blood,
and where the slain are, it is there.(AM)
13 And since we have the same spirit of faith in keeping with what is written, I believed, therefore I spoke,(A)[a] we also believe, and therefore speak. 14 We know that the One who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus(B) and present us with you. 15 Indeed, everything is for your benefit, so that grace, extended through more and more people, may cause thanksgiving(C) to increase to God’s glory.
16 Therefore we do not give up.(D) Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person(E) is being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary light affliction[b](F) is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.(G) 18 So we do not focus on what is seen,(H) but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Our Future after Death
5 For we know that if our temporary, earthly dwelling[c](I) is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling[d] in the heavens,(J) not made with hands.(K) 2 Indeed, we groan in this body, desiring(L) to put on our dwelling from heaven, 3 since, when we are clothed,[e] we will not be found naked.(M) 4 Indeed, we groan while we are in this tent, burdened as we are, because we do not want to be unclothed but clothed, so that mortality(N) may be swallowed up by life. 5 And the One who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.
6 So, we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith,(O) not by sight,(P) 8 and we are confident and satisfied to be out of the body and at home with the Lord.(Q) 9 Therefore, whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to be pleasing(R) to Him. 10 For we must all appear before the tribunal(S) of Christ,(T) so that each may be repaid(U) for what he has done in the body, whether good or worthless.
9 But You have rejected and humiliated us;
You do not march out with our armies.(A)
10 You make us retreat from the foe,
and those who hate us
have taken plunder for themselves.(B)
11 You hand us over to be eaten like sheep
and scatter us among the nations.(C)
12 You sell Your people for nothing;
You make no profit from selling them.(D)
13 You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors,
a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.(E)
14 You make us a joke among the nations,
a laughingstock[a] among the peoples.(F)
15 My disgrace is before me all day long,
and shame has covered my face,(G)
16 because of the voice of the scorner and reviler,
because of the enemy and avenger.(H)
17 All this has happened to us,
but we have not forgotten You
or betrayed Your covenant.(I)
18 Our hearts have not turned back;
our steps have not strayed from Your path.(J)
19 But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals
and have covered us with deepest darkness.(K)
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
and spread out our hands to a foreign god,(L)
21 wouldn’t God have found this out,
since He knows the secrets of the heart?(M)
22 Because of You we are slain all day long;
we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.(N)
13 The slacker says, “There’s a lion outside!
I’ll be killed in the public square!”(A)
