The Portion for the Priests
28 The Lord spoke to Moses: 29 “Tell the Israelites: The one who presents a fellowship sacrifice to the Lord must bring an offering to the Lord from his sacrifice. 30 His own hands will bring the fire offerings to the Lord. He will bring the fat together with the breast. The breast is to be waved as a presentation offering(A) before the Lord. 31 The priest is to burn the fat on the altar, but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons. 32 You are to give the right thigh(B) to the priest as a contribution from your fellowship sacrifices. 33 The son of Aaron who presents the blood of the fellowship offering and the fat will have the right thigh as a portion. 34 I have taken from the Israelites the breast of the presentation offering and the thigh of the contribution from their fellowship sacrifices, and have assigned them to Aaron the priest and his sons as a permanent portion[a](C) from the Israelites.”
35 This is the portion from the fire offerings to the Lord for Aaron and his sons(D) since the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. 36 The Lord commanded this to be given to them by the Israelites on the day He anointed them.(E) It is a permanent portion[b] throughout their generations.
37 This is the law for the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the restitution offering, the ordination offering,(F) and the fellowship sacrifice, 38 which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai(G) on the day He[c] commanded the Israelites to present their offerings to the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai.(H)
Ordination of Aaron and His Sons
8 The Lord spoke to Moses: 2 “Take Aaron, his sons with him, the garments, the anointing oil,(I) the bull of the sin[d] offering, the two rams, and the basket(J) of unleavened bread, 3 and assemble the whole community(K) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” 4 So Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the community assembled at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 5 Moses said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.”
6 Then Moses presented Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. 7 He put the tunic on Aaron, wrapped the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod(L) on him. He put the woven band of the ephod around him and fastened it to him. 8 Then he put the breastpiece on him and placed the Urim and Thummim(M) into the breastpiece. 9 He also put the turban(N) on his head and placed the gold medallion, the holy diadem, on the front of the turban, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(O)
10 Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it to consecrate(P) them. 11 He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar with all its utensils, and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them.(Q) 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed and consecrated him.(R) 13 Then Moses presented Aaron’s sons, clothed them with tunics, wrapped sashes around them, and fastened headbands on them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
14 Then he brought the bull near for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering. 15 Then Moses slaughtered it,[e] took the blood, and applied it with his finger to the horns of the altar on all sides, purifying(S) the altar. He poured out the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it so that atonement can be made on it.[f](T) 16 Moses took all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys(U) with their fat, and he burned them on the altar.(V) 17 He burned up the bull with its hide, flesh, and dung outside the camp,(W) as the Lord had commanded Moses.
18 Then he presented the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 19 Moses slaughtered it and[g] sprinkled the blood on all sides of the altar. 20 Moses cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces, and the suet,(X) 21 but he washed the entrails and shanks with water. He then burned the entire ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a pleasing aroma, a fire offering to the Lord as He had commanded Moses.
22 Next he presented the second ram, the ram of ordination,(Y) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23 Moses slaughtered it,[h] took some of its blood, and put it on Aaron’s right earlobe, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.(Z) 24 Moses also presented Aaron’s sons and put some of the blood on their right earlobes, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Then Moses sprinkled the blood on all sides of the altar. 25 He took the fat—the fat tail,(AA) all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat—as well as the right thigh. 26 From the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord he took one cake of unleavened bread, one cake of bread made with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat portions and the right thigh.(AB) 27 He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons and waved them before the Lord as a presentation offering. 28 Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar with the burnt offering. This was an ordination offering for a pleasing aroma, a fire offering to the Lord. 29 He also took the breast and waved it before the Lord as a presentation offering; it was Moses’ portion of the ordination ram as the Lord had commanded him.
30 Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments, as well as on his sons and their garments. In this way he consecrated Aaron and his garments, as well as his sons and their garments.(AC)
31 Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket for the ordination offering as I commanded:[i] Aaron and his sons are to eat it.(AD) 32 You must burn up what remains of the meat and bread.(AE) 33 You must not go outside the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the time your days of ordination are completed, because it will take seven days to ordain you.[j] 34 The Lord commanded what has been done today in order to make atonement for you.(AF) 35 You must remain at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and keep the Lord’s charge(AG) so that you will not die,(AH) for this is what I was commanded.” 36 So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord had commanded through Moses.
The Priestly Ministry Inaugurated
9 On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron, his sons, and the elders of Israel.(AI) 2 He said to Aaron, “Take a young bull for a sin[k] offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without blemish,(AJ) and present them before the Lord. 3 And tell the Israelites:[l] Take a male goat for a sin offering; a calf and a lamb, male yearlings without blemish, for a burnt offering; 4 an ox and a ram for a fellowship offering to sacrifice before the Lord; and a grain offering mixed with oil. For today the Lord is going to appear(AK) to you.”
5 They brought what Moses had commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the whole community came forward and stood before the Lord. 6 Moses said, “This is what the Lord commanded you to do, that the glory of the Lord(AL) may appear to you.”
True Relationships
31 Then(A) His mother(B) and His brothers(C) came, and standing outside, they sent word to Him and called Him. 32 A crowd was sitting around Him and told Him, “Look, Your mother, Your brothers,(D) and Your sisters[a] are outside asking for You.”
33 He replied to them, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” 34 And looking about at those who were sitting in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!(E) 35 Whoever does the will of God(F) is My brother and sister and mother.”
The Parable of the Sower
4 Again(G) He began to teach(H) by the sea, and a very large crowd gathered around Him. So He got into a boat on the sea and sat down, while the whole crowd was on the shore facing the sea. 2 He taught them many things in parables,(I) and in His teaching(J) He said to them: 3 “Listen! Consider the sower who went out to sow.(K) 4 As he sowed, this occurred: Some seed fell along the path,(L) and the birds came and ate(M) it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it sprang up right away,(N) since it didn’t have deep soil. 6 When the sun came up, it was scorched, and since it didn’t have a root, it withered.(O) 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it didn’t produce a crop. 8 Still others fell on good ground and produced a crop that increased(P) 30, 60, and 100 times what was sown.”(Q) 9 Then He said, “Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”(R)
Why Jesus Used Parables
10 When He was alone with the Twelve,(S) those who were around Him asked Him about the parables.(T) 11 He answered them, “The secret(U) of the kingdom of God(V) has been given to you, but to those outside,(W) everything comes in parables 12 so that
they may look and look,
yet not perceive;
they may listen and listen,
yet not understand;(X)
otherwise, they might turn back—
and be forgiven.”[b](Y)[c]
The Parable of the Sower Explained
13 Then(Z) He said to them: “Don’t you understand this parable?(AA) How then will you understand any of the parables? 14 The sower sows(AB) the word.(AC) 15 These[d] are the ones along the path(AD) where the word is sown: when they hear, immediately Satan(AE) comes and takes away the word(AF) sown in them.[e] 16 And these are[f] the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, immediately they receive it with joy.(AG) 17 But they have no root in themselves; they are short-lived. When pressure(AH) or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately stumble.(AI) 18 Others are sown among thorns; these are the ones who hear the word, 19 but the worries(AJ) of this age,(AK) the seduction[g](AL) of wealth,(AM) and the desires(AN) for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.(AO) 20 But the ones sown on good ground are those who hear the word,(AP) welcome it, and produce a crop:(AQ) 30, 60, and 100 times what was sown.”
Using Your Light
21 He(AR) also said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed?(AS) Isn’t it to be put on a lampstand?(AT) 22 For nothing is concealed except to be revealed,(AU) and nothing hidden except to come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, he should listen!”(AV) 24 Then He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. By the measure(AW) you use,[h](AX) it will be measured and added(AY) to you. 25 For to the one who has, it will be given, and from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.”(AZ)
12 The wicked person schemes against the righteous
and gnashes his teeth at him.(A)
13 The Lord laughs at him(B)
because He sees that his day is coming.(C)
14 The wicked have drawn the sword and strung the[a] bow
to bring down the afflicted and needy
and to slaughter those whose way is upright.(D)
15 Their swords will enter their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.(E)
16 The little that the righteous man has is better
than the abundance of many wicked people.(F)
17 For the arms[b] of the wicked will be broken,(G)
but the Lord supports the righteous.(H)
18 The Lord watches over the blameless all their days,
and their inheritance will last forever.(I)
19 They will not be disgraced in times of adversity;
they will be satisfied in days of hunger.(J)
20 But the wicked will perish;
the Lord’s enemies, like the glory of the pastures,
will fade away—
they will fade away like smoke.(K)
21 The wicked man borrows and does not repay,
but the righteous one is gracious and giving.(L)
22 Those who are blessed by Him will inherit the land,[c]
but those cursed by Him will be destroyed.(M)
23 A man’s steps are established by the Lord,
and He takes pleasure in his way.(N)
24 Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed,
because the Lord holds his hand.[d](O)
5 The son who gathers during summer is prudent;
the son who sleeps during harvest is disgraceful.(A)
