Isaiah 66

The Humble and Contrite in Spirit

66 (A)Thus says the Lord:
(B)“Heaven is my throne,
    and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
    and what is the place of my rest?
(C)All these things my hand has made,
    and so all these things came to be,
declares the Lord.
(D)But this is the one to whom I will look:
    he who is humble and contrite in spirit
    and trembles at my word.

(E)“He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man;
    he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog's neck;
he who presents a grain offering, like one who offers (F)pig's blood;
    he who makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol.
(G)These have chosen their own ways,
    and their soul delights in their abominations;
(H)I also will choose harsh treatment for them
    and bring (I)their fears upon them,
(J)because when I called, no one answered,
    when I spoke, they did not listen;
(K)but they did what was evil in my eyes
    and chose that in which I did not delight.”

Hear the word of the Lord,
    you who tremble at his word:
“Your brothers who hate you
    and cast you out for my name's sake
have said, (L)‘Let the Lord be glorified,
    that we may see your joy’;
    but it is they who shall be put to shame.

“The sound of an uproar from the city!
    A sound from the temple!
The sound of the Lord,
    (M)rendering recompense to his enemies!

Rejoice with Jerusalem

(N)“Before she was in labor
    she gave birth;
before her pain came upon her
    she delivered a son.
Who has heard such a thing?
    Who has seen such things?
Shall a land be born in one day?
    Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment?
For (O)as soon as Zion was in labor
    she brought forth her children.
Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?”
    says the Lord;
“shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?”
    says your God.

10 (P)“Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
    all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
    all you who mourn over her;
11 that you may nurse and be satisfied
    from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
    from her glorious abundance.”[a]

12 For thus says the Lord:
(Q)“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
    and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and (R)you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
    and bounced upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
    so (S)I will comfort you;
    you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
    (T)your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and (U)the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
    and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.

Final Judgment and Glory of the Lord

15 “For behold, (V)the Lord will come in fire,
    and (W)his chariots like the whirlwind,
to render his anger in fury,
    and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For (X)by fire (Y)will the Lord enter into judgment,
    and by his sword, with all flesh;
    and those slain by the Lord shall be many.

17 (Z)“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, (AA)eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord.

18 “For I know[b] their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming[c] (AB)to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory, 19 and I will set a sign among them. And from them (AC)I will send survivors to the nations, to (AD)Tarshish, (AE)Pul, and (AF)Lud, who draw the bow, to (AG)Tubal and (AH)Javan, (AI)to the coastlands far away, (AJ)that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. 20 (AK)And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations (AL)as an offering to the Lord, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 (AM)And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.

22 “For as (AN)the new heavens and the new earth
    that I make
shall remain before me, says the Lord,
    so (AO)shall your offspring and your name remain.
23 (AP)From new moon to new moon,
    and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the Lord.

24 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For (AQ)their worm shall not die, (AR)their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Philippians 3:4-21

(A)though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: (B)circumcised on the eighth day, (C)of the people of Israel, (D)of the tribe of Benjamin, (E)a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, (F)a Pharisee; (G)as to zeal, (H)a persecutor of the church; (I)as to righteousness under the law,[a] blameless. But (J)whatever gain I had, (K)I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of (L)the surpassing worth of (M)knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I (N)have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having (O)a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but (P)that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 (Q)that I may know him and (R)the power of his resurrection, and (S)may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may (T)attain the resurrection from the dead.

Straining Toward the Goal

12 Not that I have already (U)obtained this or (V)am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: (W)forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for (X)the prize of the upward (Y)call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are (Z)mature think this way, and if in anything (AA)you think otherwise, (AB)God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only (AC)let us hold true to what we have attained.

17 Brothers, (AD)join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk (AE)according to the example you have in us. 18 For (AF)many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you (AG)even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 (AH)Their end is destruction, (AI)their god is their belly, and (AJ)they glory in their shame, with (AK)minds set on earthly things. 20 But (AL)our citizenship is in heaven, and (AM)from it we (AN)await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform (AO)our lowly body (AP)to be like his glorious body, (AQ)by the power that enables him even (AR)to subject all things to himself.

Psalm 74

Arise, O God, Defend Your Cause

A Maskil[a] of (A)Asaph.

74 O God, why do you (B)cast us off forever?
    Why does your anger (C)smoke against (D)the sheep of your pasture?
(E)Remember your congregation, which you have (F)purchased of old,
    which you have (G)redeemed to be (H)the tribe of your heritage!
    Remember Mount Zion, (I)where you have dwelt.
Direct your steps to (J)the perpetual ruins;
    the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!

Your foes have (K)roared in the midst of your meeting place;
    (L)they set up their (M)own signs for (N)signs.
They were like those who swing (O)axes
    in a forest of trees.[b]
And all its (P)carved wood
    they broke down with hatchets and hammers.
They (Q)set your sanctuary on fire;
    they (R)profaned (S)the dwelling place of your name,
    bringing it down to the ground.
They (T)said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”;
    they burned all the meeting places of God in the land.

We do not see our (U)signs;
    (V)there is no longer any prophet,
    and there is none among us who knows how long.
10 How long, O God, (W)is the foe to scoff?
    Is the enemy to revile your name forever?
11 Why (X)do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
    Take it from the fold of your garment[c] and destroy them!

12 Yet (Y)God my King is from of old,
    working salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 You (Z)divided the sea by your might;
    you (AA)broke the heads of (AB)the sea monsters[d] on the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of (AC)Leviathan;
    you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
15 You (AD)split open springs and brooks;
    you (AE)dried up ever-flowing streams.
16 Yours is the day, yours also the night;
    you have established (AF)the heavenly lights and the sun.
17 You have (AG)fixed all the boundaries of the earth;
    you have made (AH)summer and winter.

18 (AI)Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs,
    and (AJ)a foolish people reviles your name.
19 Do not deliver the soul of your (AK)dove to the wild beasts;
    (AL)do not forget the life of your poor forever.

20 Have regard for (AM)the covenant,
    for (AN)the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.
21 Let not (AO)the downtrodden (AP)turn back in shame;
    let (AQ)the poor and needy praise your name.

22 Arise, O God, (AR)defend your cause;
    (AS)remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!
23 Do not forget the clamor of your foes,
    (AT)the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually!

Proverbs 24:15-16

15 (A)Lie not in wait as a wicked man against the dwelling of the righteous;
    do no violence to his home;
16 (B)for the righteous falls (C)seven times and rises again,
    but (D)the wicked stumble in times of calamity.
