Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
Version
2 Chronicles 8:11-10:19

11 Solomon brought the daughter of Pharaoh from the city of David to the house he had built for her,(A) for he said, “My wife must not live in the house[a] of David king of Israel because the places the ark of the Lord has come into are holy.”

Public Worship Established at the Temple

12 At that time(B) Solomon offered burnt offerings to the Lord on the Lord’s altar he had made in front of the portico.(C) 13 He followed the daily requirement(D) for offerings according to the commandment of Moses(E) for Sabbaths, New Moons, and the three annual appointed festivals: the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks, and the Festival of Booths.(F) 14 According to the ordinances of his father David, he appointed the divisions of the priests over their service,(G) of the Levites over their responsibilities to offer praise and to minister before the priests following the daily requirement,(H) and of the gatekeepers by their divisions with respect to each gate,(I) for this had been the command of David, the man of God.(J) 15 They did not turn aside from the king’s command regarding the priests and the Levites concerning any matter or concerning the treasuries.(K) 16 All of Solomon’s work was carried out from the day the foundation was laid for the Lord’s temple until it was finished. So the Lord’s temple was completed.

Solomon’s Fleet

17 At that time(L) Solomon went to Ezion-geber and to Eloth(M) on the seashore in the land of Edom. 18 So Hiram[b] sent ships to him by his servants along with crews of experienced seamen. They went with Solomon’s servants to Ophir, took from there 17 tons[c] of gold, and delivered it to King Solomon.(N)

The Queen of Sheba

The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon’s fame,(O) so she came to test Solomon with difficult questions at Jerusalem with a very large entourage, with camels bearing spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. She came to Solomon and spoke with him about everything that was on her mind. So Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too difficult for Solomon to explain to her. When the queen of Sheba observed Solomon’s wisdom, the palace he had built, the food at his table, his servants’ residence, his attendants’ service and their attire, his cupbearers and their attire, and the burnt offerings he offered at the Lord’s temple, it took her breath away.

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and about your wisdom is true. But I didn’t believe their reports until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, I was not even told half of your great wisdom! You far exceed the report I heard. How happy are your men.[d](P) How happy are these servants of yours, who always stand in your presence hearing your wisdom. May the Lord your God be praised! He delighted in you and put you on His throne as king for the Lord your God.(Q) Because Your God loved Israel enough to establish them forever, He has set you over them as king to carry out justice and righteousness.”(R)

Then she gave the king four and a half tons[e] of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones. There never were such spices as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. 10 In addition, Hiram’s servants and Solomon’s servants who brought gold from Ophir(S) also brought algum wood and precious stones. 11 The king made the algum wood into walkways for the Lord’s temple and for the king’s palace and into lyres and harps for the singers. Never before had anything like them been seen in the land of Judah.

12 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba her every desire, whatever she asked—far more than she had brought the king. Then she, along with her servants, returned to her own country.

Solomon’s Wealth

13 The weight of gold that came to Solomon(T) annually was 25 tons,[f] 14 besides what was brought by the merchants and traders. All the Arabian kings and governors of the land also brought gold and silver to Solomon.

15 King Solomon made 200 large shields of hammered gold; 15 pounds[g] of hammered gold went into each shield. 16 He made 300 small shields of hammered gold; about eight pounds[h] of gold went into each shield. The king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.(U)

17 The king also made a large ivory throne and overlaid it with pure gold. 18 The throne had six steps; there was a footstool covered in gold for the throne, armrests on either side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the armrests. 19 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps, one at each end. Nothing like it had ever been made in any other kingdom.

20 All of King Solomon’s drinking cups were gold, and all the utensils of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. There was no silver, since it was considered as nothing in Solomon’s time, 21 for the king’s ships kept going to Tarshish(V) with Hiram’s servants, and once every three years the ships of Tarshish would arrive bearing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.[i]

22 King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the world in riches and wisdom.(W) 23 All the kings of the world wanted an audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart. 24 Each of them would bring his own gift—items[j] of silver and gold, clothing, weapons,[k][l] spices, and horses and mules—as an annual tribute.

25 Solomon(X) had 4,000 stalls for horses and chariots, and 12,000 horsemen.(Y) He stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 26 He ruled over all the kings from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and as far as the border of Egypt.(Z) 27 The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar as abundant as sycamore in the Judean foothills. 28 They were bringing horses for Solomon from Egypt and from all the countries.

Solomon’s Death

29 The remaining events(AA) of Solomon’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in the Events of Nathan the Prophet, the Prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and the Visions of Iddo the Seer concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat.(AB) 30 Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for 40 years. 31 Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David.(AC) His son Rehoboam became king in his place.

The Kingdom Divided

10 Then Rehoboam went to Shechem,(AD) for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king. When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about it—for he was in Egypt where he had fled from King Solomon’s presence—Jeroboam returned from Egypt.(AE) So they summoned him. Then Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam: “Your father made our yoke difficult. Therefore, lighten your father’s harsh service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”

Rehoboam replied, “Return to me in three days.” So the people left.

Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon when he was alive, asking, “How do you advise me to respond to these people?”

They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever.”

But he rejected the advice of the elders who had advised him, and he consulted with the young men who had grown up with him, the ones serving him. He asked them, “What message do you advise we send back to these people who said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”

10 Then the young men who had grown up with him told him, “This is what you should say to the people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you, make it lighter on us!’ This is what you should say to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins.[m] 11 Now therefore, my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I, with barbed whips.’”[n]

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had ordered, saying, “Return to me on the third day.” 13 Then the king answered them harshly. King Rehoboam rejected the elders’ advice 14 and spoke to them according to the young men’s advice, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy,[o](AF) but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I, with barbed whips.”[p]

15 The king did not listen to the people because the turn of events came from God,(AG) in order that the Lord might carry out His word that He had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.(AH)

16 When(AI) all Israel saw[q](AJ) that the king had not listened to them, the people answered the king:

What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Israel, each man to your tent;
David, look after your own house now!

So all Israel went to their tents. 17 But as for the Israelites living in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram,[r](AK) who was in charge of the forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. However, King Rehoboam managed to get into his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19 Israel is in rebellion against the house of David until today.

Romans 8:9-25

You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since[a] the Spirit of God lives in you.(A) But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(B) he does not belong to Him. 10 Now if Christ is in you,(C) the body is dead[b] because of sin, but the Spirit[c] is life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead(D) lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through[d] His Spirit who lives in you.

The Holy Spirit’s Ministries

12 So then, brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh, 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body,(E) you will live. 14 All those led by God’s Spirit(F) are God’s sons.(G) 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,(H) but you received the Spirit of adoption,(I) by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”(J) 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit(K) that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs(L)—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—seeing that[e] we suffer with Him(M) so that we may also be glorified with Him.

From Groans to Glory

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing(N) with the glory(O) that is going to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation eagerly waits with anticipation(P) for God’s sons(Q) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected(R) to futility(S)—not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it(T)—in the hope 21 that the creation itself(U) will also be set free from the bondage of corruption into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains(V) until now. 23 And not only that,(W) but we ourselves who have the Spirit as the firstfruits(X)—we also groan within ourselves,(Y) eagerly waiting for adoption,(Z) the redemption of our bodies.(AA) 24 Now in this hope(AB) we were saved, yet hope(AC) that is seen is not hope, because who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see,(AD) we eagerly wait for it with patience.

Psalm 18:16-36

16 He reached down from heaven
and took hold of me;
He pulled me out of deep waters.(A)
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too strong for me.(B)
18 They confronted me in the day of my distress,
but the Lord was my support.(C)
19 He brought me out to a spacious place;(D)
He rescued me because He delighted in me.(E)

20 The Lord rewarded me
according to my righteousness;(F)
He repaid me
according to the cleanness of my hands.(G)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord
and have not turned from my God to wickedness.(H)
22 Indeed, I have kept all His ordinances in mind[a]
and have not disregarded His statutes.(I)
23 I was blameless toward Him(J)
and kept myself from sinning.
24 So the Lord repaid me
according to my righteousness,(K)
according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.(L)

25 With the faithful
You prove Yourself faithful;
with the blameless man
You prove Yourself blameless;
26 with the pure
You prove Yourself pure,
but with the crooked
You prove Yourself shrewd.(M)
27 For You rescue an afflicted people,(N)
but You humble those with haughty eyes.(O)
28 Lord, You light my lamp;
my God illuminates my darkness.(P)
29 With You I can attack a barrier,[b]
and with my God I can leap over a wall.(Q)

30 God—His way is perfect;(R)
the word of the Lord is pure.(S)
He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.(T)
31 For who is God besides Yahweh?(U)
And who is a rock? Only our God.(V)
32 God—He clothes me with strength(W)
and makes my way perfect.
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer(X)
and sets me securely on the heights.[c](Y)
34 He trains my hands for war;(Z)
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.(AA)
35 You have given me the shield of Your salvation;
Your right hand upholds me,(AB)
and Your humility exalts me.
36 You widen a place beneath me for my steps,(AC)
and my ankles do not give way.(AD)

Proverbs 19:26

26 The one who assaults his father and evicts his mother
is a disgraceful and shameful son.
