New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE)
Version
Genesis 13:5-15:21

Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, and the land could not support both of them living together because their possessions were so great that they could not live together. Thus strife arose between the herders of Abram’s livestock and the herders of Lot’s livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites lived in the land.(A)

Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me and between your herders and my herders, for we are kindred.(B) Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.” 10 Lot looked about him and saw that the plain of the Jordan was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar; this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.(C) 11 So Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the plain and moved his tent as far as Sodom.(D) 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.(E)

14 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Raise your eyes now, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,(F) 15 for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.(G) 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted.(H) 17 Rise up, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.”(I) 18 So Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks[a] of Mamre, which are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.(J)

Lot’s Captivity and Rescue

14 In the days of King Amraphel of Shinar, King Arioch of Ellasar, King Chedorlaomer of Elam, and King Tidal of Goiim,(K) these kings made war with King Bera of Sodom, King Birsha of Gomorrah, King Shinab of Admah, King Shemeber of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, that is, Zoar.(L) All these joined forces in the Valley of Siddim, that is, the Dead Sea.[b](M) Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and subdued the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim,(N) and the Horites in the hill country of Seir as far as El-paran on the edge of the wilderness;(O) then they turned back and came to En-mishpat, that is, Kadesh, and subdued all the country of the Amalekites and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.(P) Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, that is, Zoar, went out, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim with King Chedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Shinar, and King Arioch of Ellasar, four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into them, and the rest fled to the hill country. 11 So the enemy took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their provisions and went their way;(Q) 12 they also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who lived in Sodom, and his goods and departed.(R)

13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks[c] of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram.(S) 14 When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.(T) 15 He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the goods and also brought back his nephew Lot with his goods and the women and the people.(U)

Abram Blessed by Melchizedek

17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh, that is, the King’s Valley.(V) 18 And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High.[d](W) 19 He blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,[e]
    maker of heaven and earth,(X)
20 and blessed be God Most High,[f]
    who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything.(Y) 21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have sworn to God[g] Most High,[h] maker of heaven and earth,(Z) 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so that you might not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’(AA) 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten and the share of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their share.”

God’s Covenant with Abram

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”(AB) But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”[i](AC) And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.”(AD) But the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.”(AE) He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”(AF) And he believed the Lord, and the Lord[j] reckoned it to him as righteousness.

Then he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.”(AG) But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”(AH) He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other, but he did not cut the birds in two.(AI) 11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him.(AJ) 13 Then the Lord[k] said to Abram, “Know this for certain, that your offspring shall be aliens in a land that is not theirs and shall be slaves there, and they shall be oppressed for four hundred years,(AK) 14 but I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.(AL) 15 As for yourself, you shall go to your ancestors in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.(AM) 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”(AN)

17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.(AO) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates,(AP) 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

Matthew 5:27-48

Concerning Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’(A) 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(B) 29 If your right eye causes you to sin,[a] tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.[b](C) 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin,[c] cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.[d]

Concerning Divorce

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’(D) 32 But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Concerning Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’(E) 34 But I say to you: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,(F) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.[e]

Concerning Retaliation

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’(G) 39 But I say to you: Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also,(H) 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, give your coat as well, 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to the one who asks of you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.(I)

Love for Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’(J) 44 But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(K) 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.(L) 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(M)

Psalm 6

Psalm 6

Prayer for Recovery from Grave Illness

To the leader: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.(A)
Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;
    O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.(B)
My soul also is struck with terror,
    while you, O Lord—how long?(C)

Turn, O Lord, save my life;
    deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
For in death there is no remembrance of you;
    in Sheol who can give you praise?(D)

I am weary with my moaning;
    every night I flood my bed with tears;
    I drench my couch with my weeping.
My eyes waste away because of grief;
    they grow weak because of all my foes.(E)

Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
    for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.(F)
The Lord has heard my supplication;
    the Lord accepts my prayer.(G)
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
    they shall turn back and in a moment be put to shame.

Proverbs 1:29-33

29 Because they hated knowledge
    and did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 would have none of my counsel
    and despised all my reproof,(A)
31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way
    and be sated with their own devices.(B)
32 For waywardness kills the simple,
    and the complacency of fools destroys them;(C)
33 but those who listen to me will be secure
    and will live at ease without dread of disaster.”(D)
