¹ I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever.
With my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.
² Yes, I have said, “Your mercy is built to last forever.
In the heavens you establish your faithfulness.”

³ The Lord said,^[a]
“I have made a covenant with my chosen one.
I have sworn to David my servant.
⁴ I will establish your seed^[b] forever, Interlude
and I will build your throne through all generations.”

⁵ The heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,
also your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.
⁶ For who in the skies can compare with the Lord?
Who is like the Lord among the sons of God?
⁷ God is revered in the council of the holy ones.
He is to be feared more than all who surround him.
⁸ O Lord God of Armies, who is like you?
You are mighty, O Lord,^[c]
and your faithfulness surrounds you.
⁹ You rule over the majestic sea.
When its waves rise up, you quiet them.
¹⁰ You crushed Rahab^[d] like one of the slain.
With your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
¹¹ The heavens are yours, and yours also is the earth.
You founded the world and everything that fills it.
¹² You created the north and the south.
Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at your name.
¹³ Your arm works for you with power.
Your hand is strong. Your right hand is raised high.
¹⁴ Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne.
Mercy and truth are right in front of you.

¹⁵ How blessed are the people who know the joyful cry.
Lord, they walk in the light from your face.
¹⁶ In your name they celebrate all day long.
In your righteousness they are lifted up.
¹⁷ For you are the beauty of their strength,
and by your favor you exalt our Horn.^[e]
18 Indeed, our Shield belongs to the Lord,
our King to the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹ Once you spoke in a vision to your favored ones.
You said:
I have granted help to a warrior.
I have raised up a young man from among the people.
²⁰ I found David my servant.
With my holy oil I have anointed him.
²¹ He is the one whom my hand will sustain.
Surely my arm will strengthen him.
²² No enemy will subject him to tribute.
No violent man will oppress him.
²³ I will crush his foes before him
and strike down those who hate him.
²⁴ My faithfulness and mercy will be with him,
and through my name his horn^[f] will be exalted.
²⁵ I will set his hand over the sea,
his right hand over the rivers.
²⁶ He will call out to me, “You are my Father,
my God and the Rock that saves me.”
²⁷ I will also make him the Firstborn,
the highest of the kings of the earth.
²⁸ I will keep my mercy for him forever,
and my covenant with him will stand firm.
²⁹ I will establish his seed forever.
His throne will endure like the days of the heavens.

³⁰ If his sons forsake my law,
and they do not walk according to my judgments,
³¹ if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commands,
³² I will punish their rebellion with the rod, their guilt with whipping.
³³ But I will not break off my mercy from him.
I will not let my truth become false.
³⁴ I will not violate my covenant.
I will not alter what comes out of my lips.
³⁵ Once and for all, I have sworn by my holiness—
surely I will not lie to David—
³⁶ that his seed will continue forever,
and his throne will endure before me like the sun.
³⁷ It will be established forever like the moon. Interlude
This witness in the sky is faithful.

³⁸ But you have rejected, you have cast off,
you have been very angry with your anointed one,
³⁹ and you have renounced the covenant with your servant,
and you have thrown his crown on the ground.
⁴⁰ You have broken down all his walls
and reduced his fortresses to rubble.
⁴¹ All who pass by on the road have plundered him.
He is despised by his neighbors.
⁴² You have raised up the right hand of his foes.
You have made all his enemies happy.
⁴³ Indeed, you have deflected the edge of his sword,
and you have not let him stand up in battle.
⁴⁴ You have put an end to his majesty,
and you have hurled his throne to the ground.
⁴⁵ You have cut short the days of his youth. Interlude
You have clothed him with shame.
⁴⁶ How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
Will your wrath burn like fire?
⁴⁷ Remember me! What is my life!
For you have created such futility for all the children of Adam!
⁴⁸ Can anyone live and not see death, Interlude
or save his life from the power of the grave?
⁴⁹ Where are your former mercies, O Lord,
which you swore to David in your faithfulness?
⁵⁰ Remember, Lord, the scorn your servants have^[g] endured.
(I carry on my heart all the many peoples!)^[h]
51 Remember the scorn
    with which your enemies have been scornful, O Lord,
    with which they have scorned the steps of your Anointed One.

¹ Sing to the Lord a new song.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
² Sing to the Lord. Praise his name.
Proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.
³ Tell about his glory among the nations,
about his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

⁴ For great is the Lord and worthy of great praise.
He is to be feared above all gods.
⁵ For all the gods of the peoples are “nothings,”^[a]
but the Lord made the heavens.
⁶ Splendor and majesty are before him.
Power and beauty are in his sanctuary.
⁷ Ascribe to the Lord, families of peoples,
Ascribe to the Lord glory and power.
⁸ Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name.
Bring a gift and come into his courtyards.
⁹ Bow down to the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.^[b]
Look away from his face,^[c] all the earth.

¹¹ Let the heavens rejoice.
Let the earth celebrate.
Let the sea roar,
and all that fills it.
¹² Let the fields be overjoyed,
and everything that is in them.
Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy
¹³     before the Lord, for he comes,
    for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

¹ Shout to the Lord with joy, all the earth.
² Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him with joyful songs.
³ Know that the Lord is God.
He made us, and we are his.^[a]
We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
⁴ Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
his courtyards with praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name.^[b]
5 For the Lord is good. His mercy endures forever.
His faithfulness continues through all generations.

¹ I will sing about your mercy and justice.
To you, O Lord, I will make music.

² I will act wisely, following the way that is honest.
When will you come to me?
Within my palace I will conduct myself with integrity.^[c]

³ I will not tolerate an evil^[d] cause in my sight.
I hate unfaithfulness and apostasy.^[e]
It will not stick to me.
⁴ A perverted heart shall be kept far from me.
I will not acknowledge evil.
⁵ I will silence anyone who slanders his neighbor in secret.
I cannot tolerate anyone who has arrogant eyes and a proud heart.
⁶ My eyes will watch for the faithful in the land,
so that they can be seated with me.
Those who walk in the way of integrity will serve as my ministers.
⁷ Anyone who practices deceit will not sit inside my palace.
Anyone who is a liar will not stand in my sight.
⁸ Every morning I will silence all the wicked in the land,
in order to cut off every evildoer from the city of the Lord.

¹ Give thanks to the Lord.
Proclaim^[a] his name.
Make his deeds known among the peoples.
² Sing to him, make music to him.
Meditate on all his wonders.
³ Take pride in his holy name.
Let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
⁴ Search for the Lord and his strength.
Seek his face always.
⁵ Remember the wonders which he has done,
his signs, and the judgments from his mouth,
⁶ you descendants of Abraham his servant,
you sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.
⁷ He is the Lord our God.
His judgments are in all the earth.

⁸ He remembers his covenant forever,
the word he commanded for a thousand generations,
⁹ the covenant which he made with Abraham,
and his oath to Isaac.
¹⁰ Yes, he confirmed it to Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant.
¹¹ He said, “To you I will give the land of Canaan,
the territory you will possess.”

¹² While they were few in number,
just a little group and aliens in the land,
¹³ they moved around from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another people.
¹⁴ He did not allow anyone to oppress them,
and he rebuked kings because of them:
¹⁵ “Do not touch my anointed ones,
and do not harm my prophets.”

¹⁶ Then he summoned a famine on the land.
He destroyed their entire food supply.
¹⁷ He sent ahead of them a man sold as a slave, Joseph.
¹⁸ They hurt his feet with chains.
His throat was clamped in an iron collar,
¹⁹ until the time when his predictions came true.
The promise of the Lord tested him.
²⁰ The king sent for him and released him.
The ruler of peoples set him free.
²¹ He made him master of his house
and ruler over all his possessions,
²² to bind his officials by his will,
to teach his elders wisdom.

²³ Then Israel came to Egypt.
Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.^[b]
24 Then the Lord made his people very fruitful.
He made them too numerous for their foes.
²⁵ He turned the Egyptians’ hearts so they hated his people.
They dealt deceitfully with his servants.
²⁶ He sent Moses his servant,
and Aaron, whom he had chosen.
²⁷ They performed his signs among them,
his warning signs in the land of Ham.
²⁸ He sent darkness, and it became extremely dark,
because Israel^[c] did not rebel against his words.
²⁹ He turned their waters into blood,
and he caused their fish to die.
³⁰ Their land swarmed with frogs,
even in the rooms of their kings.
³¹ He spoke, and a swarm of flies came.
There were lice^[d] throughout their borders.
³² He gave them hail instead of rain,
with blazing lightning throughout their land.
³³ Then he struck down their vines and fig trees,
and he broke down the trees within their borders.
³⁴ He spoke, and the locusts came,
and grasshoppers without number.
³⁵ They ate every green plant in their land.
They ate the produce of their soil.
³⁶ Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land,
the first fruit of all their virility.
³⁷ Then he brought Israel out with silver and gold.
From among their tribes no one stumbled.
³⁸ Egypt was glad when they went out,
because fear of Israel had fallen on them.

³⁹ He spread out a cloud as a canopy
and fire to give light at night.
⁴⁰ They asked, and he brought quail,
and he satisfied them with bread from heaven.
⁴¹ He opened the rock, and water gushed out.
It flowed in the desert like a river.

⁴² Because he remembered his holy word to Abraham, his servant,
⁴³ he brought out his people with rejoicing,
his chosen ones with a joyful shout.
⁴⁴ He gave them the lands of the nations,
and they took possession of the work of other peoples
⁴⁵ so that they could keep his statutes and observe his laws.

¹ Remember for David’s sake, O Lord, all his afflictions.
² Remember how he swore to the Lord.
He made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:
³ “I will not enter my own house.^[a]
I will not get into my own bed.^[b]
4 I will not allow my eyes to sleep
or my eyelids to slumber,
⁵ until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

⁶ Yes, we heard about it in Ephrathah.
We found it in the fields of Ja’ar.
⁷ Let us go to his dwelling place.
Let us bow down at his footstool.
⁸ Arise, O Lord, come to your resting place,
    you and the ark of your strength.
⁹ May your priests be clothed with righteousness.
May your favored ones shout for joy.
¹⁰ For the sake of David your servant,
do not reject the face of your Anointed One.^[c]

¹¹ The Lord swore to David
    a truth from which he will not turn back:
“From the fruit of your body
    I will place kings on your throne.
¹² If your sons keep my covenant
and my testimonies that I teach them,
then their sons will sit on your throne forever.”
¹³ For the Lord has chosen Zion.
He has desired it for his dwelling.
¹⁴ “This is my resting place forever.
Here I will live, for I have desired it.
¹⁵ I will bless her greatly with food.
I will satisfy Zion’s poor with bread.
¹⁶ I will clothe her priests with salvation,
and her favored ones will shout for joy.
¹⁷ There I will make a horn shoot up for David.
I will set up a lamp for my Anointed One.
¹⁸ I will clothe his enemies with shame,
but on him his crown will be beautiful.”
