Beginning
Rash Vows
5 (4:17)[a] Be careful what you do[b] when you go to the temple[c] of God;
draw near to listen[d] rather than to offer a sacrifice[e] like fools,[f]
for they do not realize that they are doing wrong.
2 (5:1) Do not be rash with your mouth or hasty in your heart to bring up a matter before God,
for God is in heaven and you are on earth!
Therefore, let your words be few.
3 Just as dreams come when there are many cares,[g]
so[h] the rash vow[i] of a fool occurs[j] when there are many words.
4 When you make a vow[k] to God, do not delay in paying it.[l]
For God[m] takes no pleasure in fools:
Pay what you vow!
5 It is better for you not to vow
than to vow and not pay it.[n]
6 Do not let your mouth cause you[o] to sin,
and do not tell the priest,[p] “It was a mistake!”[q]
Why make God angry at you[r]
so that he would destroy the work of your hands?
7 Just as there is futility in many dreams,
so also in many words.[s]
Therefore, fear God.
Government Corruption
8 If you see the extortion[t] of the poor,
or the perversion[u] of justice and fairness in the government,[v]
do not be astonished by the matter.
For the high official is watched by a higher official,[w]
and there are higher ones over them![x]
9 The produce of the land is seized[y] by all of them,
even the king is served[z] by the fields.[aa]
Covetousness
10 The one who loves money[ab] will never be satisfied with money,[ac]
he who loves wealth[ad] will never be satisfied[ae] with his[af] income.
This also is futile.
11 When someone’s[ag] prosperity[ah] increases, those who consume it also increase;
so what does its owner[ai] gain, except that he gets to see it with his eyes?[aj]
12 The sleep of the laborer is pleasant—whether he eats little or much—
but the wealth of the rich will not allow him to sleep.
Materialism Thwarts Enjoyment of Life
13 Here is[ak] a misfortune[al] on earth[am] that I have seen:
Wealth hoarded by its owner to his own misery.
14 Then that wealth was lost through bad luck;[an]
although he fathered a son, he has nothing left to give him.[ao]
15 Just as he came forth from his mother’s womb, naked will he return as he came,
and he will take nothing in his hand that he may carry away from his toil.
16 This is another misfortune:[ap]
Just as he came, so will he go.
What did he gain from toiling for the wind?
17 Surely, he ate in darkness every day of his life,[aq]
and he suffered greatly with sickness and anger.
Enjoy the Fruit of Your Labor
18 I have seen personally what is the only beneficial and appropriate course of action for people:[ar]
to eat and drink,[as] and find enjoyment in all their[at] hard work[au] on earth[av]
during the few days of their life that God has given them,
for this is their reward.[aw]
19 To every man whom God has given wealth and possessions,
he has also given him the ability[ax]
to eat from them, to receive his reward, and to find enjoyment in his toil;
these things[ay] are the gift of God.
20 For he does not think[az] much about the fleeting[ba] days of his life
because God keeps him preoccupied[bb] with the joy he derives from his activity.[bc]
Not Everyone Enjoys Life
6 Here is[bd] another misfortune[be] that I have seen on earth,[bf]
and it weighs heavily[bg] on people:[bh]
2 God gives a man riches, property, and wealth
so that he lacks nothing that his heart[bi] desires,[bj]
yet God does not enable[bk] him to enjoy[bl] the fruit of his labor[bm]—
instead, someone else[bn] enjoys[bo] it![bp]
This is fruitless and a grave misfortune.[bq]
3 Even if a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years,
even if he lives a long, long time,[br] but cannot enjoy his prosperity—
even if he were to live forever[bs]—
I would say, “A stillborn child[bt] is better off than he is.”[bu]
4 Though the stillborn child[bv] came into the world[bw] for no reason[bx] and departed into darkness,
though its name is shrouded in darkness,[by]
5 though it never saw the light of day[bz] nor knew anything,[ca]
yet it has more rest[cb] than that man—
6 if he should live a thousand years twice, yet does not enjoy his prosperity.
For both of them die![cc]
7 All man’s labor is for nothing more than[cd] to fill his stomach[ce]—
yet his appetite[cf] is never satisfied!
8 So what advantage does a wise man have over a fool?[cg]
And what advantage[ch] does a pauper gain by knowing how to survive?[ci]
9 It is better to be content with[cj] what the eyes can see[ck]
than for one’s heart always to crave more.[cl]
This continual longing[cm] is futile—like[cn] chasing the wind.
The Futile Way Life Works
10 Whatever has happened was foreordained,[co]
and what happens to a person[cp] was also foreknown.
It is useless for him to argue with God about his fate
because God is more powerful than he is.[cq]
11 The more one argues with words, the less he accomplishes.[cr]
How does that benefit him?[cs]
12 For no one knows what is best for a person during his life[ct]—
during the few days of his fleeting life—
for[cu] they pass away[cv] like a shadow.
Nor can anyone tell him what the future will hold for him on earth.[cw]
Life is Brief and Death is Certain
7 A good reputation[cx] is better[cy] than precious[cz] perfume;[da]
likewise,[db] the day of one’s[dc] death[dd] is better than the day of one’s birth.[de]
2 It is better to go to a funeral[df]
than a feast.[dg]
For death[dh] is the destiny[di] of every person,[dj]
and the living should[dk] take this[dl] to heart.
3 Sorrow[dm] is better than laughter,
because sober reflection[dn] is good for the heart.[do]
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of merrymaking.[dp]
Frivolous Living Versus Wisdom
5 It is better for a person to receive[dq] a rebuke from those who are wise[dr]
than to listen to the song[ds] of fools.
6 For like the crackling of quick-burning thorns[dt] under a cooking pot,
so is the laughter of the fool.
This kind of folly[du] also is useless.[dv]
Human Wisdom Overturned by Adversity
7 Surely oppression[dw] can turn a wise person into a fool;[dx]
likewise,[dy] a bribe corrupts[dz] the heart.[ea]
8 The end of a matter[eb] is better than its beginning;
likewise, patience[ec] is better than pride.[ed]
9 Do not let yourself be quickly provoked,[ee]
for anger resides in the lap[ef] of fools.
10 Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these days?”[eg]
for it is not wise to ask that.[eh]
Wisdom Can Lengthen One’s Life
11 Wisdom, like[ei] an inheritance, is a good thing;
it benefits those who see the light of day.[ej]
12 For wisdom provides[ek] protection,[el]
just as[em] money provides protection.[en]
But the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves the life[eo] of its owner.
Wisdom Acknowledges God’s Orchestration of Life
13 Consider the work of God:
For who can make straight what he has bent?
14 In times of prosperity[ep] be joyful,
but in times of adversity[eq] consider this:
God has made one as well as the other,[er]
so that no one can discover what the future holds.[es]
Exceptions to the Law of Retribution
15 During the days of my fleeting life[et] I have seen both[eu] of these things:
Sometimes[ev] a righteous person dies prematurely[ew] in spite of[ex] his righteousness,
and sometimes[ey] a wicked person lives long[ez] in spite of his evil deeds.
16 So do not be excessively righteous or excessively[fa] wise;[fb]
otherwise[fc] you might[fd] be disappointed.[fe]
17 Do not be excessively wicked and do not be a fool;
otherwise[ff] you might die before your time.
18 It is best to take hold of one warning[fg] without letting go of the other warning;[fh]
for the one who fears God will follow[fi] both warnings.[fj]
Wisdom Needed Because No One is Truly Righteous
19 Wisdom gives a wise person more protection[fk]
than ten rulers in a city.
20 For[fl] there is not one truly[fm] righteous person on the earth
who continually does good and never sins.
21 Also, do not pay attention to everything that people[fn] say;
otherwise,[fo] you might even hear[fp] your servant cursing you.
22 For you know in your own heart[fq]
that you also have cursed others many times.
Human Wisdom is Limited
23 I have examined all this by wisdom;
I said, “I am determined[fr] to comprehend this”[fs]—but it was beyond my grasp.[ft]
24 Whatever has happened is beyond human[fu] understanding;[fv]
it is far deeper than anyone can fathom.[fw]
True Righteousness and Wisdom Are Virtually Nonexistent
25 I tried[fx] to understand, examine, and comprehend[fy]
the role of[fz] wisdom in the scheme of things,[ga]
and to understand the stupidity of wickedness[gb] and the insanity of folly.[gc]
26 I discovered this:[gd]
More bitter than death is the kind of[ge] woman[gf] who is like a hunter’s snare;[gg]
her heart is like a hunter’s net and her hands are like prison chains.
The man who pleases God escapes her,
but the sinner is captured by her.
27 The Teacher says:
I discovered this while trying to discover the scheme of things, item by item.
28 What I have continually sought, I have not found;
I have found only[gh] one upright[gi] man among a thousand,
but I have not found one upright woman among all of them.
29 This alone have I discovered: God made humankind upright,
but they have sought many evil schemes.
Human Government Demonstrates Limitations of Wisdom
8 Who is[gj] a[gk] wise person? Who knows the solution[gl] to a problem?[gm]
A person’s wisdom brightens his appearance,[gn] and softens[go] his harsh countenance.[gp]
2 Obey the king’s command,[gq]
because you took[gr] an oath before God[gs] to be loyal to him.[gt]
3 Do not rush out of the king’s presence in haste—do not delay when the matter is unpleasant,[gu]
for he can do whatever he pleases.
4 Surely the king’s authority[gv] is absolute;[gw]
no one can say[gx] to him, “What are you doing?”
5 Whoever obeys his[gy] command will not experience harm,
and a wise person[gz] knows the proper time[ha] and procedure.
6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter,
for the oppression[hb] of the king[hc] is severe upon his victim.[hd]
7 Surely no one knows the future,[he]
and no one can tell another person what will happen.[hf]
8 Just as no one has power over the wind to restrain it,[hg]
so no one has power over the day of his[hh] death.
Just as no one can be discharged during the battle,[hi]
so wickedness cannot rescue the wicked.[hj]
9 While applying[hk] my mind[hl] to everything[hm] that happens in this world,[hn] I have seen all this:
Sometimes one person[ho] dominates[hp] other people[hq] to their harm.[hr]
Contradictions to the Law of Retribution
10 Not only that,[hs] but I have seen the wicked approaching[ht] and entering the temple,[hu]
and as they left the holy temple,[hv] they
boasted[hw] in the city that they had done so.
This also is an enigma.[hx]
11 When[hy] a sentence[hz] is not executed[ia] at once against a crime,[ib]
the human heart[ic] is encouraged to do evil.[id]
12 Even though a sinner might commit a hundred crimes[ie] and still live a long time,[if]
yet I know that it will go well with God-fearing people[ig]—for they stand in fear[ih] before him.
13 But it will not go well with the wicked,
nor will they[ii] prolong their[ij] days like a shadow,[ik]
because they[il] do not stand in fear[im] before God.
14 Here is[in] another[io] enigma[ip] that occurs on earth:
Sometimes there are righteous people who get what the wicked deserve,[iq]
and sometimes there are wicked people who get what the righteous deserve.[ir]
I said, “This also is an enigma.”
Enjoy Life In Spite of Its Injustices
15 So I recommend the enjoyment of life,[is]
for there is nothing better on earth[it] for a person to do[iu] except[iv] to eat, drink, and enjoy[iw] life.[ix]
So[iy] joy[iz] will accompany him in his toil
during the days of his life that God gives him on earth.[ja]
Limitations of Human Wisdom
16 When I tried[jb] to gain[jc] wisdom
and to observe the activity[jd] on earth—
even though it prevents anyone from sleeping day or night[je]—
17 then I discerned all that God has done:[jf]
No one really comprehends what happens[jg] on earth.[jh]
Despite all human[ji] efforts to discover it, no one can ever grasp[jj] it.[jk]
Even if[jl] a wise person claimed[jm] that he understood,
he would not really comprehend[jn] it.[jo]
