Proverbs 24-26

24 Do not envy evil people,[a]
do not desire[b] to be with them;
for their hearts contemplate violence,
and their lips speak harm.[c]
By[d] wisdom a house is built,[e]
and through understanding it is established;
by knowledge its rooms are filled
with all kinds of precious and pleasing treasures.
A wise warrior[f] is strong,[g]
and a man of knowledge makes his strength stronger;
for with guidance you wage your war,
and with numerous advisers there is victory.[h]
Wisdom is unattainable[i] for a fool;
in court[j] he does not open his mouth.[k]
The one who plans to do evil
will be called a scheming person.[l]
A foolish scheme[m] is sin,
and the scorner is an abomination to people.[n]
10 You have slacked off[o] in the day of trouble[p]
your strength is small![q]
11 Deliver those being taken away to death,
and hold back those slipping to the slaughter.[r]
12 If you say, “But we did not know about this,”
won’t[s] the one who evaluates[t] hearts discern it?
Won’t the one who guards your life realize[u]
and repay each person according to his deeds?[v]
13 Eat honey,[w] my child, for it is good,
and honey from the honeycomb is sweet to your taste.
14 Likewise, know[x] that wisdom is sweet[y] to your soul;
if you have found it,[z] you have a future,[aa]
and your hope will not be cut off.
15 Do not lie in wait like the wicked[ab] against the place where the righteous live;
do not assault[ac] his home.
16 Indeed[ad] a righteous person will fall[ae] seven times, and then get up again,
but the guilty will collapse[af] in calamity.
17 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,[ag]
and when he stumbles do not let your heart rejoice,
18 lest the Lord see it, and be displeased,[ah]
and turn his wrath away from him.[ai]
19 Do not fret because of evil people
or be envious of wicked people,
20 for the evil person has no future,[aj]
and the lamp of the wicked will be extinguished.[ak]
21 Fear the Lord, my child,[al] as well as the king,
and do not associate[am] with rebels,[an]
22 for suddenly their destruction will overtake them,[ao]
and who knows the ruinous judgment both the Lord and the king can bring?[ap]

Further Sayings of the Wise

23 These sayings also are from the wise:

To show partiality[aq] in judgment is terrible:[ar]
24 The one who says to the guilty,[as] “You are innocent,”[at]
peoples will curse him, and nations will denounce[au] him.
25 But there will be delight[av] for those who convict[aw] the guilty,[ax]
and a pleasing blessing[ay] will come on them.
26 Like a kiss on the lips[az]
is the one who gives an honest answer.
27 Establish your work outside and get your fields ready;
afterward build[ba] your house.[bb]
28 Do not be a witness against your neighbor without cause,[bc]
and do not deceive with your words.[bd]
29 Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me;
I will pay him back[be] according to what he has done.”[bf]
30 I passed by the field of a sluggard,
by the vineyard of one who lacks sense.[bg]
31 I saw[bh] that thorns had grown up all over it,
the ground[bi] was covered with weeds,
and its stone wall was broken down.
32 Then I scrutinized[bj] it. I was putting[bk] my mind[bl] to it—
I saw;[bm] I took in a lesson:[bn]
33 “A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to relax,
34 and your poverty will come like a bandit,
and your need like an armed robber.”[bo]

Proverbs of Solomon Collected by Hezekiah

25 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of King Hezekiah of Judah copied:[bp]

It is the glory of God[bq] to conceal[br] a matter,

and it is the glory of a king to search out a matter.
As the heaven is high[bs] and the earth is deep
so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.[bt]
Remove the dross from the silver,
and material[bu] for the silversmith will emerge;
remove the wicked from before the king,[bv]
and his throne[bw] will be established in righteousness.[bx]
Do not honor yourself before the king,
and do not stand in the place of great men;
for it is better for him[by] to say to you, “Come up here,”[bz]
than to put you lower[ca] before a prince,
whom your eyes have seen.[cb]
Do not go out hastily to litigation,[cc]
or[cd] what will you do afterward
when your neighbor puts you to shame?
When you argue a case[ce] with your neighbor,
do not reveal the secret of another person,[cf]
10 lest the one who hears it put you to shame
and your infamy[cg] will never go away.
11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver,[ch]
so is a word skillfully spoken.[ci]
12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold,[cj]
so is a wise reprover to the ear of the one who listens.[ck]
13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest,[cl]
so is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
for he refreshes the heart[cm] of his masters.
14 Like cloudy skies and wind that produce no rain,[cn]
so is the one who boasts[co] of a gift not given.[cp]
15 Through patience[cq] a ruler can be persuaded,[cr]
and a soft tongue[cs] can break a bone.[ct]
16 You have found[cu] honey—eat only what is sufficient for you,
lest you become stuffed with[cv] it and vomit it up.[cw]
17 Don’t set foot too frequently[cx] in your neighbor’s house,
lest he become weary[cy] of you and hate you.
18 Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow,[cz]
so is the one who testifies against[da] his neighbor as a false witness.[db]
19 Like a bad tooth or a foot out of joint,[dc]
so is confidence[dd] in an unfaithful person at the time of trouble.[de]
20 Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day,[df]
or like vinegar poured on soda,[dg]
so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.[dh]
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat,
and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,
22 for you will heap coals of fire on his head,[di]
and the Lord will reward you.[dj]
23 The north wind[dk] brings forth rain,
and a gossiping tongue[dl] brings forth[dm] an angry look.[dn]
24 It is better to live on a corner of the housetop
than in a house in company with a quarrelsome wife.[do]
25 Like cold water to a weary person,[dp]
so is good news from a distant land.[dq]
26 Like a muddied[dr] spring and a polluted[ds] well,
so is a righteous person who gives way[dt] before the wicked.
27 It is not good[du] to eat too much honey,
nor is it honorable for people to seek their own glory.[dv]
28 Like a city that is broken down and without a wall,
so is a person who cannot control his temper.[dw]
26 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest,
so honor[dx] is not fitting for a fool.[dy]
Like a fluttering bird or like a flying swallow,
so a curse without cause[dz] does not come to rest.[ea]
A whip for the horse and a bridle for the donkey,
and a rod for the backs of fools![eb]
Do not answer a fool according to his folly,[ec]
lest you yourself also be like him.[ed]
Answer a fool according to his folly,[ee]
lest he be wise in his own opinion.[ef]
Like cutting off the feet or drinking violence,[eg]
so is sending[eh] a message by the hand of a fool.[ei]
Like[ej] legs dangle uselessly[ek] from the lame,
so[el] a proverb[em] dangles[en] in the mouth of fools.
Like tying a stone in a sling,[eo]
so is giving honor to a fool.
Like[ep] a thorn[eq] has gone up into the hand of a drunkard,
so[er] a proverb has gone up[es] into the mouth of a fool.[et]
10 Like[eu] an archer who wounds at random,[ev]
so[ew] is the one who hires[ex] a fool or hires any passerby.
11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit,[ey]
so a fool repeats his folly.[ez]
12 You have seen[fa] a man wise in his own opinion[fb]
there is more hope for a fool[fc] than for him.
13 The sluggard[fd] has said,[fe] “There is a lion in the road!
A lion in the streets!”[ff]
14 Like[fg] a door that turns on its hinges,[fh]
so[fi] a sluggard turns[fj] on his bed.
15 The sluggard has plunged[fk] his hand in the dish;
he is too lazy[fl] to bring it back to his mouth.[fm]
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own opinion[fn]
than seven people who respond with good sense.[fo]
17 Like[fp] one who grabs a wild dog by the ears,[fq]
so is the person passing by who becomes furious[fr] over a quarrel not his own.
18 Like a madman[fs] who shoots
firebrands and deadly arrows,[ft]
19 so is a person[fu] who has deceived his neighbor,
and said, “Was I not only joking?”[fv]
20 Where there is no wood, a fire goes out,
and where there is no gossip,[fw] contention ceases.[fx]
21 Like charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire,
so is a contentious person[fy] to kindle strife.[fz]
22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
and they have gone down into a person’s innermost being.[ga]
23 Like a coating of glaze[gb] over earthenware
are fervent[gc] lips with an evil heart.[gd]
24 The one who hates others disguises[ge] it with his lips,
but he stores up[gf] deceit within him.[gg]
25 When[gh] he speaks graciously,[gi] do not believe him,[gj]
for there are seven[gk] abominations[gl] within him.
26 Though his[gm] hatred may be concealed[gn] by deceit,
his evil will be uncovered[go] in the assembly.
27 The one who digs a pit[gp] will fall into it;
the one who rolls a stone—it will come back on him.
28 A lying tongue[gq] hates those crushed by it,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.[gr]
