Psalm 140[a]
Prayer for Deliverance from the Snares of the Wicked
1 For the director.[b] A psalm of David.
2 [c]Deliver me, O Lord, from evildoers;
protect me from those who are violent,
3 who plan evil schemes in their hearts[d]
and stir up strife continually.
4 Their tongues[e] are as sharp as those of a serpent,
while the venom of vipers is on their lips. Selah
5 Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked;
protect me from those who are violent,
who are determined to cause my downfall.
6 The arrogant[f] have set a hidden trap for me;
they have spread out cords as a net,
laying snares for me along the way. Selah
7 [g]I say to the Lord, “You are my God.
Listen, O Lord, to the voice of my supplications.”
8 O Lord, my God, my strong deliverer,
you shield my head on the day of battle.
9 Do not grant the desires of the wicked, O Lord;
do not permit their evil plots to succeed,
or they will become proud. Selah
10 [h]Those who surround me raise up their heads;
let them be overwhelmed by the malice they threaten.
11 May burning coals rain down on them;
may they be flung down into the miry depths,
never again to rise.[i]
12 Do not permit slanderers to find rest in the land;
may evil hunt the violent to their death.
13 [j]I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor
and upholds the cause of the needy.
14 Then the upright will give thanks to your name,
and the righteous will dwell in your presence.
Psalm 141[k]
Prayer for Protection against Evildoers
1 [l]A psalm of David.
O Lord, I call to you; come quickly to my aid;
listen to my plea when I call out to you.
2 May my prayer be like incense[m] before you,
the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice.
3 [n]Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips.
4 Do not permit my heart to be drawn to evil,
or to the pursuit of wicked deeds
in the company of those who do evil;
let me not share in their corruption.
5 [o]If a righteous man strikes me, I regard it as kindness;
if he rebukes me, it is oil on my head.[p]
But never let the oil of the wicked anoint my head,
for my prayer is always opposed to their evil deeds.
6 [q]When their leaders are flung down in stony places,
they will learn that my prayers were heard.
7 As the soil is shattered when the ground is plowed,
so our bones are scattered at the mouth of the netherworld.
8 [r]But my eyes are turned to you, O Lord God;
in you I seek refuge;
do not take my life away.
9 Keep me safe from the traps they have laid for me,
from the snares of evildoers.
10 Let the wicked tumble into their own nets all together
while I pass by unharmed.[s]
Psalm 142[t]
Prayer in Time of Abandonment
1 A maskil[u] of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.
2 [v]I cry out to the Lord with my plea;
I entreat the Lord to grant me mercy.
3 Before him I pour out my complaint
and tell my troubles in his presence.
4 [w]No matter how faint my spirit is within me,
you are there to guide my steps.
Along the path on which I travel[x]
they have hidden a trap for me.
5 I look to my right,
but there is no friend who knows me.
There is no refuge available to me;
no one cares whether I live or perish.[y]
6 [z]I cry out to you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.”[aa]
7 Listen to my plea for help,
for I am in desperate straits.
Rescue me from those who seek to persecute me,
for they are too strong for me.[ab]
8 Set me free from my prison,[ac]
so that I may praise your name.
Then the righteous will assemble around me
because of your great generosity to me.
Psalm 143[ad]
Prayer of a Penitent in Distress
1 [ae]A psalm of David.
O Lord, hear my prayer,
incline your ear to my supplications.
In your faithfulness respond to me
with your righteousness.
2 Do not subject your servant to your judgment,
for no one living is righteous before you.[af]
3 [ag]An enemy has stalked me unrelentingly
and crushed me into the ground;
he has left me to live in darkness[ah]
like those long dead.
4 My spirit is faint within me,
and my heart[ai] has succumbed to fear.
5 I remember the days of old,
reflecting on all your actions
and meditating on the works of your hands.[aj]
6 I stretch out my hands[ak] to you;
my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah
7 [al]Answer me quickly, O Lord,
for my spirit grows faint.
Do not hide your face from me
or I will be like those who go down to the pit.[am]
8 At dawn[an] let me experience your kindness,
for in you I place my trust.
Show me the path I must walk,
for to you I lift up my soul.
9 Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord,
for in you I seek refuge.
10 Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God.[ao]
Let your gracious Spirit lead me
along a level path.
11 For your name’s sake,[ap] O Lord, preserve my life;
in your righteousness deliver me from distress.
12 In your kindness, destroy my enemies,
and annihilate all those who oppress me,
for I am your servant.[aq]
Psalm 144[ar]
Prayer for Victory and Peace
1 [as]Of David.
Blessed be the Lord,[at] my Rock,
who trains my hands for war
and my fingers for battle.
2 You are my safeguard[au] and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield in whom I take refuge,
the one who subdues nations under me.
3 O Lord, what is man that you care for him,
or the son of man that you think of him?[av]
4 Man is nothing more than a breath;
his days are like a fleeting shadow.[aw]
5 [ax]Part the heavens, O Lord, and descend;
touch the mountains so that they smoke.[ay]
6 Flash forth lightning bolts and scatter my foes;
rout them with your arrows.[az]
7 Reach forth your hand[ba] from on high;
deliver me and rescue me
from the mighty waters
and from the power of foreign foes
8 whose mouths utter lies[bb]
and whose right hands are raised to swear to untruths.
9 [bc]I will sing a new song to you, my God;
on a ten-stringed lyre I will play music for you.[bd]
10 You grant victory to kings
and deliverance to your servant David from the cruel sword.[be]
11 Deliver me and rescue me
from the hands of foreign foes
whose mouths utter lies
and whose right hands are raised to swear to untruths.[bf]
12 [bg]May our sons in their youth
be like carefully nurtured plants,
and may our daughters be like pillars
designed to adorn a palace.[bh]
13 May our barns be filled
with every kind of crop.
May our sheep increase by thousands,
by tens of thousands in our fields,[bi]
14 and may our cattle be well fed.[bj]
May there be no breach in our walls,
no going into exile,
no cries of distress in our streets.
15 Blessed are the people for whom this is true;
blessed[bk] are the people whose God is the Lord.
Psalm 145[bl]
Praise of the Divine Majesty
1 [bm]Praise. Of David.
I will extol you, my God and King;
I will bless your name[bn] forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.[bo]
3 [bp]Great is the Lord and worthy of the highest praise;
no one can even begin to comprehend his greatness.[bq]
4 Each generation will praise your works[br] to the next
and proclaim your mighty deeds.
5 People will proclaim the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
6 They will speak of the power of your awesome deeds,
and I will relate your greatness.
7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness
and sing joyfully of your saving justice.
8 [bs]The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in kindness.[bt]
9 The Lord is good to all,
showing compassion to every creature.
10 All your creatures praise you,[bu] O Lord,
and all your saints bless you.
11 They relate the glory of your kingdom
and tell of all your power.[bv]
12 They make known to all people your mighty deeds
and the glorious majesty of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom will last forever,
and your dominion will endure throughout all generations.[bw]
[bx]The Lord is faithful in all his promises
and kind[by] in all his deeds.
14 The Lord supports all those who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.[bz]
15 The eyes of all look hopefully to you,
and you give them their food at the right time.
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the needs of every living creature.[ca]
17 [cb]The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and merciful in everything he does.[cc]
18 The Lord is near to all who call out to him,
to all who call out to him sincerely.[cd]
19 He satisfies the desires of all who fear him;
he hears their cry and saves them.[ce]
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
but he will completely destroy all the wicked.[cf]
21 May my mouth declare the praise of the Lord,
and may every creature[cg] bless his holy name
forever and ever.
