Psalm 51[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David, written when Nathan the prophet confronted him after David’s affair with Bathsheba.[b]
51 Have mercy on me, O God, because of[c] your loyal love.
Because of[d] your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts.[e]
2 Wash away my wrongdoing.[f]
Cleanse me of my sin.[g]
3 For I am aware of[h] my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin.[i]
4 Against you—you above all[j]—I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So[k] you are just when you confront me;[l]
you are right when you condemn me.[m]
5 Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.[n]
6 Look,[o] you desire[p] integrity in the inner man;[q]
you want me to possess wisdom.[r]
7 Cleanse me[s] with hyssop[t] and I will be pure;[u]
wash me[v] and I will be whiter than snow.[w]
8 Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven.[x]
May the bones[y] you crushed rejoice.[z]
9 Hide your face[aa] from my sins.
Wipe away[ab] all my guilt.
10 Create for me a pure heart, O God.[ac]
Renew a resolute spirit within me.[ad]
11 Do not reject me.[ae]
Do not take your holy Spirit[af] away from me.[ag]
12 Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance.
Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey.[ah]
13 Then I will teach[ai] rebels your merciful ways,[aj]
and sinners will turn[ak] to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder,[al] O God, the God who delivers me.
Then my tongue will shout for joy because of your righteousness.[am]
15 O Lord, give me the words.[an]
Then my mouth will praise you.[ao]
16 Certainly[ap] you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it;[aq]
you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.[ar]
17 The sacrifice God desires is a humble spirit[as]—
O God, a humble and repentant heart[at] you will not reject.[au]
18 Because you favor Zion, do what is good for her.[av]
Fortify[aw] the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will accept[ax] the proper sacrifices, burnt sacrifices and whole offerings;
then bulls will be sacrificed[ay] on your altar.[az]
Psalm 52[ba]
For the music director, a well-written song[bb] by David. It was written when Doeg the Edomite went and informed Saul: “David has arrived at the home of Ahimelech.”[bc]
52 Why do you boast about your evil plans,[bd] O powerful man?
God’s loyal love protects me all day long.[be]
2 Your tongue carries out your destructive plans;[bf]
it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver.[bg]
3 You love evil more than good,
lies more than speaking the truth.[bh] (Selah)
4 You love to use all the words that destroy,[bi]
and the tongue that deceives.
5 Yet[bj] God will make you a permanent heap of ruins.[bk]
He will scoop you up[bl] and remove you from your home;[bm]
he will uproot you from the land of the living. (Selah)
6 When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe,
and will mock the evildoer, saying:[bn]
7 “Look, here is the man who would not make[bo] God his protector.
He trusted in his great wealth
and was confident about his plans to destroy others.”[bp]
8 But I[bq] am like a flourishing[br] olive tree in the house of God;
I continually[bs] trust in God’s loyal love.
9 I will continually[bt] thank you when[bu] you execute judgment;[bv]
I will rely on[bw] you,[bx] for your loyal followers know you are good.[by]
Psalm 53[bz]
For the music director, according to the machalath style;[ca] a well-written song[cb] by David.
53 Fools say to themselves,[cc] “There is no God.”[cd]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[ce]
none of them does what is right.[cf]
2 God looks down from heaven[cg] at the human race,[ch]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[ci] and seeks God.[cj]
3 Everyone rejects God;[ck]
they are all morally corrupt.[cl]
None of them does what is right,[cm]
not even one!
4 All those who behave wickedly[cn] do not understand[co]—
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to God.
5 They are absolutely terrified,[cp]
even by things that do not normally cause fear.[cq]
For God annihilates[cr] those who attack you.[cs]
You are able to humiliate them because God has rejected them.[ct]
6 I wish the deliverance[cu] of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the well-being of his people,[cv]
may Jacob rejoice,[cw]
may Israel be happy![cx]
Psalm 54[cy]
For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song[cz] by David. It was written when the Ziphites came and informed Saul: “David is hiding with us.”[da]
54 O God, deliver me by your name.[db]
Vindicate me[dc] by your power.
2 O God, listen to my prayer.
Pay attention to what I say.[dd]
3 For foreigners[de] attack me;[df]
ruthless men, who do not respect God, seek my life.[dg] (Selah)
4 Look, God is my deliverer.[dh]
The Lord is among those who support me.[di]
5 May those who wait to ambush me[dj] be repaid for their evil.[dk]
As a demonstration of your faithfulness,[dl] destroy them.
6 With a freewill offering I will sacrifice[dm] to you.
I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good.
7 Surely[dn] he rescues me from all trouble,[do]
and I triumph over my enemies.[dp]
Psalm 55[dq]
For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a well-written song[dr] by David.
55 Listen, O God, to my prayer.
Do not ignore[ds] my appeal for mercy.
2 Pay attention to me and answer me.
I am so upset[dt] and distressed,[du] I am beside myself,[dv]
3 because of what the enemy says,[dw]
and because of how the wicked[dx] pressure me,[dy]
for they hurl trouble[dz] down upon me[ea]
and angrily attack me.
4 My heart beats violently[eb] within me;
the horrors of death overcome me.[ec]
5 Fear and panic overpower me;[ed]
terror overwhelms[ee] me.
6 I say,[ef] “I wish I had wings like a dove.
I would fly away and settle in a safe place.
7 Look, I will escape to a distant place;
I will stay in the wilderness. (Selah)
8 I will hurry off to a place that is safe
from the strong wind[eg] and the gale.”
9 Confuse them,[eh] O Lord.
Frustrate their plans.[ei]
For I see violence and conflict in the city.
10 Day and night they walk around on its walls,[ej]
while wickedness and destruction[ek] are within it.
11 Disaster is within it;
violence[el] and deceit do not depart from its public square.
12 Indeed,[em] it is not an enemy who insults me,
or else I could bear it;
it is not one who hates me who arrogantly taunts me,[en]
or else I could hide from him.
13 But it is you,[eo] a man like me,[ep]
my close friend in whom I confided.[eq]
14 We would share personal thoughts with each other;[er]
in God’s temple we would walk together among the crowd.
15 May death destroy them.[es]
May they go down alive into Sheol.[et]
For evil is in their dwelling place and in their midst.
16 As for me, I will call out to God,
and the Lord will deliver me.
17 During the evening, morning, and noontime
I will lament and moan,[eu]
and he will hear[ev] me.[ew]
18 He will rescue[ex] me and protect me from those who attack me,[ey]
even though[ez] they greatly outnumber me.[fa]
19 God, the one who has reigned as king from long ago,
will hear and humiliate them.[fb] (Selah)
They refuse to change,
and do not fear God.[fc]
20 He[fd] attacks[fe] his friends;[ff]
he breaks his solemn promises to them.[fg]
21 His words are as smooth as butter,[fh]
but he harbors animosity in his heart.[fi]
His words seem softer than oil,
but they are really like sharp swords.[fj]
22 Throw your burden[fk] upon the Lord,
and he will sustain you.[fl]
He will never allow the godly to be shaken.[fm]
23 But you, O God, will bring them[fn] down to the deep Pit.[fo]
Violent and deceitful people[fp] will not live even half a normal lifespan.[fq]
But as for me, I trust in you.
Psalm 56[fr]
For the music director, according to the yonath-elem-rekhoqim style;[fs] a prayer[ft] of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath.[fu]
56 Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me.[fv]
All day long hostile enemies[fw] are tormenting me.[fx]
2 Those who anticipate my defeat[fy] attack me all day long.
Indeed,[fz] many are fighting against me, O Exalted One.[ga]
3 When[gb] I am afraid,
I trust in you.
4 In God—I boast in his promise[gc]—
in God I trust; I am not afraid.
What can mere men[gd] do to me?[ge]
5 All day long they cause me trouble;[gf]
they make a habit of plotting my demise.[gg]
6 They stalk[gh] and lurk;[gi]
they watch my every step,[gj]
as[gk] they prepare to take my life.[gl]
7 Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape.[gm]
In your anger[gn] bring down the nations,[go] O God.
8 You keep track of my misery.[gp]
Put my tears in your leather container.[gq]
Are they not recorded in your scroll?[gr]
9 My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help;[gs]
I know that God is on my side.[gt]
10 In God—I boast in his promise[gu]—
in the Lord—I boast in his promise[gv]—
11 in God I trust; I am not afraid.
What can mere men[gw] do to me?[gx]
12 I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God;[gy]
I will give you the thank offerings you deserve,[gz]
13 when you deliver[ha] my life from death.
You keep my feet from stumbling,[hb]
so that I might serve[hc] God as I enjoy life.[hd]
Psalm 57[he]
For the music director, according to the al-tashcheth style;[hf] a prayer[hg] of David, written when he fled from Saul into the cave.[hh]
57 Have mercy on me, O God. Have mercy on me.
For in you I have taken shelter.[hi]
In the shadow of your wings[hj] I take shelter
until trouble passes.
2 I cry out for help to God Most High,[hk]
to the God who vindicates[hl] me.
3 May he send help from heaven and deliver me[hm]
from my enemies who hurl insults.[hn] (Selah)
May God send his loyal love and faithfulness.
4 I am surrounded by lions;
I lie down[ho] among those who want to devour me,[hp]
men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.[hq]
5 Rise up[hr] above the sky, O God.
May your splendor cover the whole earth.[hs]
6 They have prepared a net to trap me;[ht]
I am discouraged.[hu]
They have dug a pit for me.[hv]
They will fall[hw] into it. (Selah)
7 I am determined,[hx] O God. I am determined.
I will sing and praise you.
8 Awake, my soul![hy]
Awake, O stringed instrument and harp!
I will wake up at dawn.[hz]
9 I will give you thanks before the nations, O Lord.
I will sing praises to you before foreigners.[ia]
10 For your loyal love extends beyond the sky,[ib]
and your faithfulness reaches the clouds.
11 Rise up[ic] above the sky, O God.
May your splendor cover the whole earth.[id]
