Psalm 21[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
21 O Lord, the king rejoices in the strength you give;[b]
he takes great delight in the deliverance you provide.[c]
2 You grant[d] him his heart’s desire;
you do not refuse his request.[e] (Selah)
3 For you bring him[f] rich[g] blessings;[h]
you place a golden crown on his head.
4 He asked you to sustain his life,[i]
and you have granted him long life and an enduring dynasty.[j]
5 Your deliverance brings him great honor;[k]
you give him majestic splendor.[l]
6 For you grant him lasting blessings;
you give him great joy by allowing him into your presence.[m]
7 For the king trusts[n] in the Lord,
and because of the Most High’s[o] faithfulness he is not shaken.[p]
8 You[q] prevail over[r] all your enemies;
your power is too great for those who hate you.[s]
9 You burn them up like a fiery furnace[t] when you appear.[u]
The Lord angrily devours them;[v]
the fire consumes them.
10 You destroy their offspring[w] from the earth,
their descendants[x] from among the human race.[y]
11 Yes,[z] they intend to do you harm;[aa]
they dream up a scheme,[ab] but they do not succeed.[ac]
12 For you make them retreat[ad]
when you aim your arrows at them.[ae]
13 Rise up, O Lord, in strength![af]
We will sing and praise[ag] your power.
Psalm 22[ah]
For the music director, according to the tune “Morning Doe”;[ai] a psalm of David.
22 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?[aj]
I groan in prayer, but help seems far away.[ak]
2 My God, I cry out during the day,
but you do not answer,
and during the night my prayers do not let up.[al]
3 You are holy;
you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel.[am]
4 In you our ancestors[an] trusted;
they trusted in you[ao] and you rescued them.
5 To you they cried out, and they were saved;
in you they trusted and they were not disappointed.[ap]
6 But I[aq] am a worm,[ar] not a man;[as]
people insult me and despise me.[at]
7 All who see me taunt[au] me;
they mock me[av] and shake their heads.[aw]
8 They say,[ax]
“Commit yourself[ay] to the Lord!
Let the Lord[az] rescue him!
Let the Lord[ba] deliver him, for he delights in him.”[bb]
9 Yes, you are the one who brought me out[bc] from the womb
and made me feel secure on my mother’s breasts.
10 I have been dependent on you since birth;[bd]
from the time I came out of my mother’s womb you have been my God.[be]
11 Do not remain far away from me,
for trouble is near and I have no one to help me.[bf]
12 Many bulls[bg] surround me;
powerful bulls of Bashan[bh] hem me in.
13 They[bi] open their mouths to devour me[bj]
like a roaring lion that rips its prey.[bk]
14 My strength drains away like water;[bl]
all my bones are dislocated.
My heart[bm] is like wax;
it melts away inside me.
15 The roof of my mouth[bn] is as dry as a piece of pottery;
my tongue sticks to my gums.[bo]
You[bp] set me in the dust of death.[bq]
16 Yes,[br] wild dogs surround me—
a gang of evil men crowd around me;
like a lion they pin my hands and feet.[bs]
17 I can count[bt] all my bones;
my enemies[bu] are gloating over me in triumph.[bv]
18 They are dividing up my clothes among themselves;
they are rolling dice[bw] for my garments.
19 But you, O Lord, do not remain far away.
You are my source of strength.[bx] Hurry and help me![by]
20 Deliver me[bz] from the sword.
Save[ca] my life[cb] from the claws[cc] of the wild dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lion,[cd]
and from the horns of the wild oxen.[ce]
You have answered me.[cf]
22 I will declare your name to my countrymen.[cg]
In the middle of the assembly I will praise you.
23 You loyal followers of the Lord,[ch] praise him.
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him.
All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him.[ci]
24 For he did not despise or detest the suffering[cj] of the oppressed.[ck]
He did not ignore him;[cl]
when he cried out to him, he responded.[cm]
25 You are the reason I offer praise[cn] in the great assembly;
I will fulfill my promises before the Lord’s loyal followers.[co]
26 Let the oppressed eat and be filled.[cp]
Let those who seek his help praise the Lord.
May you[cq] live forever!
27 Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the Lord and turn to him.[cr]
Let all the nations[cs] worship you.[ct]
28 For the Lord is king[cu]
and rules over the nations.
29 All the thriving people[cv] of the earth will join the celebration and worship;[cw]
all those who are descending into the grave[cx] will bow before him,
including those who cannot preserve their lives.[cy]
30 A whole generation[cz] will serve him;
they will tell the next generation about the Lord.[da]
31 They will come and tell about his saving deeds;[db]
they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished.[dc]
Psalm 23[dd]
A psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my shepherd,[de]
I lack nothing.[df]
2 He takes me to lush pastures,[dg]
he leads me to refreshing water.[dh]
3 He restores my strength.[di]
He leads me down[dj] the right paths[dk]
for the sake of his reputation.[dl]
4 Even when I must walk through the darkest valley,[dm]
I fear[dn] no danger,[do]
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff reassure me.[dp]
5 You prepare a feast before me[dq]
in plain sight of my enemies.
You refresh[dr] my head with oil;
my cup is completely full.[ds]
6 Surely your goodness and faithfulness[dt] will pursue[du] me all my days,[dv]
and I will live in[dw] the Lord’s house[dx] for the rest of my life.[dy]
Psalm 24[dz]
A psalm of David.
24 The Lord owns the earth and all it contains,
the world and all who live in it.
2 For he set its foundation upon the seas,
and established[ea] it upon the ocean currents.[eb]
3 Who is allowed to ascend[ec] the mountain of the Lord?[ed]
Who may go up to his holy dwelling place?
4 The one whose deeds are blameless
and whose motives are pure,[ee]
who does not lie,[ef]
or make promises with no intention of keeping them.[eg]
5 Such godly people are rewarded by the Lord,[eh]
and vindicated by the God who delivers them.[ei]
6 Such purity characterizes the people who seek his favor,
Jacob’s descendants, who pray to him.[ej] (Selah)
7 Look up,[ek] you gates.
Rise up,[el] you eternal doors.
Then the majestic king[em] will enter.[en]
8 Who is this majestic king?[eo]
The Lord who is strong and mighty.
The Lord who is mighty in battle.
9 Look up, you gates.
Rise up, you eternal doors.
Then the majestic king will enter.
10 Who is this majestic king?
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies.[ep]
He is the majestic king. (Selah)
Psalm 25[eq]
By David.
25 O Lord, I come before you in prayer.[er]
2 My God, I trust in you.
Please do not let me be humiliated;
do not let my enemies triumphantly rejoice over me.
3 Certainly none who rely on you will be humiliated.
Those who deal in treachery will be thwarted[es] and humiliated.
4 Make me understand your ways, O Lord.
Teach me your paths.[et]
5 Guide me into your truth[eu] and teach me.
For you are the God who delivers me;
on you I rely all day long.
6 Remember[ev] your compassionate and faithful deeds, O Lord,
for you have always acted in this manner.[ew]
7 Do not hold against me[ex] the sins of my youth[ey] or my rebellious acts.
Because you are faithful to me, extend to me your favor, O Lord.[ez]
8 The Lord is both kind and fair;[fa]
that is why he teaches sinners the right way to live.[fb]
9 May he show[fc] the humble what is right.[fd]
May he teach[fe] the humble his way.
10 The Lord always proves faithful and reliable[ff]
to those who follow the demands of his covenant.[fg]
11 For the sake of your reputation,[fh] O Lord,
forgive my sin, because it is great.[fi]
12 The Lord shows his faithful followers
the way they should live.[fj]
13 They experience his favor;[fk]
their descendants[fl] inherit the land.[fm]
14 The Lord’s loyal followers receive his guidance,[fn]
and he reveals his covenantal demands to them.[fo]
15 I continually look to the Lord for help,[fp]
for he will free my feet from the enemy’s net.[fq]
16 Turn toward me and have mercy on me,
for I am alone[fr] and oppressed.
17 Deliver me from my distress;[fs]
rescue me from my suffering.[ft]
18 See my pain and suffering.
Forgive all my sins.[fu]
19 Watch my enemies, for they outnumber me;
they hate me and want to harm me.[fv]
20 Protect me[fw] and deliver me!
Please do not let me be humiliated,
for I have taken shelter in you.
21 May integrity and godliness protect me,
for I rely on you.
22 O God, rescue[fx] Israel
from all their distress![fy]
