Psalm 9-16

Psalm 9[a]

For the music director, according to the alumoth-labben style;[b] a psalm of David.

I will thank the Lord with all my heart!
I will tell about all your amazing deeds.[c]
I will be happy and rejoice in you.
I will sing praises to you, O Most High.[d]
When my enemies turn back,
they trip and are defeated[e] before you.
For you defended my just cause;[f]
from your throne you pronounced a just decision.[g]
You terrified the nations with your battle cry.[h]
You destroyed the wicked;[i]
you permanently wiped out all memory of them.[j]
The enemy’s cities have been reduced to permanent ruins.[k]
You destroyed their cities;[l]
all memory of the enemies has perished.[m]
But the Lord[n] rules[o] forever;
he reigns in a just manner.[p]
He judges the world fairly;
he makes just legal decisions for the nations.[q]
Consequently[r] the Lord provides safety for the oppressed;[s]
he provides safety in times of trouble.[t]
10 Your loyal followers trust in you,[u]
for you, Lord, do not abandon those who seek your help.[v]
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who rules[w] in Zion.
Tell the nations what he has done.[x]
12 For the one who takes revenge against murderers took notice of the oppressed;[y]
he did not overlook[z] their cry for help[aa]
13 when they prayed:[ab]
“Have mercy on me,[ac] Lord!
See how I am oppressed by those who hate me,[ad]
O one who can snatch me away[ae] from the gates of death!
14 Then I will[af] tell about all your praiseworthy acts;[ag]
in the gates of Daughter Zion[ah] I will rejoice because of your deliverance.”[ai]
15 The nations fell[aj] into the pit they had made;
their feet were caught in the net they had hidden.[ak]
16 The Lord revealed himself;
he accomplished justice.
The wicked were ensnared by their own actions.[al] (Higgaion.[am] Selah)
17 The wicked are turned back and sent to Sheol;[an]
this is the destiny of[ao] all the nations that ignore[ap] God,
18 for the needy are not permanently ignored,[aq]
the hopes of the oppressed are not forever dashed.[ar]
19 Rise up, Lord![as]
Don’t let men be defiant.[at]
May the nations be judged in your presence.
20 Terrify them, Lord.[au]
Let the nations know they are mere mortals.[av] (Selah)

Psalm 10[aw]

10 Why, Lord, do you stand far off?
Why do you pay no attention during times of trouble?[ax]
The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed;[ay]
the oppressed are trapped[az] by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up.[ba]
Yes,[bb] the wicked man[bc] boasts because he gets what he wants;[bd]
the one who robs others[be] curses[bf] and[bg] rejects the Lord.[bh]
The wicked man is so arrogant he always thinks,
“God won’t hold me accountable; he doesn’t care.”[bi]
He is secure at all times.[bj]
He has no regard for your commands;[bk]
he disdains all his enemies.[bl]
He says to himself,[bm]
“I will never[bn] be shaken,
because I experience no calamity.”[bo]
His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words;[bp]
his tongue injures and destroys.[bq]
He waits in ambush near the villages;[br]
in hidden places he kills the innocent.
His eyes look for some unfortunate victim.[bs]
He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket.[bt]
He lies in ambush, waiting to catch[bu] the oppressed;
he catches the oppressed[bv] by pulling in his net.[bw]
10 His victims are crushed and beaten down;
they are trapped in his sturdy nets.[bx]
11 He says to himself,[by]
“God overlooks it;
he does not pay attention;
he never notices.”[bz]
12 Rise up, Lord![ca]
O God, strike him down.[cb]
Do not forget the oppressed.
13 Why does the wicked man reject God?[cc]
He says to himself,[cd] “You[ce] will not hold me accountable.”[cf]
14 You have taken notice,[cg]
for[ch] you always see[ci] one who inflicts pain and suffering.[cj]
The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you;[ck]
you deliver[cl] the fatherless.[cm]
15 Break the arm[cn] of the wicked and evil man.
Hold him accountable for his wicked deeds,[co]
which he thought you would not discover.[cp]
16 The Lord rules forever![cq]
The nations are driven out of his land.[cr]
17 Lord, you have heard[cs] the request[ct] of the oppressed;
you make them feel secure because you listen to their prayer.[cu]
18 You defend[cv] the fatherless and oppressed,[cw]
so that mere mortals may no longer terrorize them.[cx]

Psalm 11[cy]

For the music director, by David.

11 In the Lord I have taken shelter.[cz]
How can you say to me,[da]
“Flee to a mountain like a bird.[db]
For look, the wicked[dc] prepare[dd] their bows,[de]
they put their arrows on the strings,
to shoot in the darkness[df] at the morally upright.[dg]
When the foundations[dh] are destroyed,
what can the godly[di] accomplish?”[dj]
The Lord is in his holy temple;[dk]
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.[dl]
His eyes[dm] watch;[dn]
his eyes[do] examine[dp] all people.[dq]
The Lord approves of[dr] the godly,[ds]
but he[dt] hates[du] the wicked and those who love to do violence.[dv]
May he rain down[dw] burning coals[dx] and brimstone[dy] on the wicked!
A whirlwind is what they deserve.[dz]
Certainly[ea] the Lord is just;[eb]
he rewards godly deeds.[ec]
The upright will experience his favor.[ed]

Psalm 12[ee]

For the music director, according to the sheminith style;[ef] a psalm of David.

12 Deliver, Lord!
For the godly[eg] have disappeared;[eh]
people of integrity[ei] have vanished.[ej]
People lie to one another;[ek]
they flatter and deceive.[el]
May the Lord cut off[em] all flattering lips,
and the tongue that boasts![en]
They say,[eo] “We speak persuasively;[ep]
we know how to flatter and boast.[eq]
Who is our master?”[er]
“Because of the violence done to the oppressed,[es]
because of the painful cries[et] of the needy,
I will spring into action,”[eu] says the Lord.
“I will provide the safety they so desperately desire.”[ev]
The Lord’s words are absolutely reliable.[ew]
They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground,
where it is thoroughly refined.[ex]
You, Lord, will protect them;[ey]
you will continually shelter each one from these evil people,[ez]
for the wicked seem to be everywhere,[fa]
when people promote evil.[fb]

Psalm 13[fc]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

13 How long, Lord, will you continue to ignore me?[fd]
How long will you pay no attention to me?[fe]
How long must I worry,[ff]
and suffer in broad daylight?[fg]
How long will my enemy gloat over me?[fh]
Look at me![fi] Answer me, O Lord my God!
Revive me,[fj] or else I will die.[fk]
Then[fl] my enemy will say, “I have defeated him.”
Then[fm] my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.
But I[fn] trust in your faithfulness.
May I rejoice because of your deliverance.[fo]
I will sing praises[fp] to the Lord
when he vindicates me.[fq]

Psalm 14[fr]

For the music director, by David.

14 Fools say to themselves,[fs] “There is no God.”[ft]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[fu]
none of them does what is right.[fv]
The Lord looks down from heaven[fw] at the human race,[fx]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[fy] and seeks God.[fz]
Everyone rejects God;[ga]
they are all morally corrupt.[gb]
None of them does what is right,[gc]
not even one.
All those who behave wickedly[gd] do not understand—[ge]
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to the Lord.
They are absolutely terrified,[gf]
for God defends the godly.[gg]
You want to humiliate the oppressed,[gh]
even though[gi] the Lord is their[gj] shelter.
I wish the deliverance[gk] of Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the well-being of his people,[gl]
may Jacob rejoice,[gm]
may Israel be happy![gn]

Psalm 15[go]

A psalm of David.

15 Lord, who may be a guest in your home?[gp]
Who may live on your holy hill?[gq]
Whoever lives a blameless life,[gr]
does what is right,
and speaks honestly.[gs]
He[gt] does not slander,[gu]
or do harm to others,[gv]
or insult his neighbor.[gw]
He despises a reprobate,[gx]
but honors the Lord’s loyal followers.[gy]
He makes firm commitments and does not renege on his promise.[gz]
He does not charge interest when he lends his money.[ha]
He does not take bribes to testify against the innocent.[hb]
The one who lives like this[hc] will never be shaken.

Psalm 16[hd]

A prayer[he] of David.

16 Protect me, O God, for I have taken shelter in you.[hf]
I say to the Lord, “You are the Lord,
my only source of well-being.”[hg]
As for God’s chosen people who are in the land,
and the leading officials I admired so much[hh]
their troubles multiply;
they desire other gods.[hi]
I will not pour out drink offerings of blood to their gods,[hj]
nor will I make vows in the name of their gods.[hk]
Lord, you give me stability and prosperity;[hl]
you make my future secure.[hm]
It is as if I have been given fertile fields
or received a beautiful tract of land.[hn]
I will praise[ho] the Lord who[hp] guides[hq] me;
yes, during the night I reflect and learn.[hr]
I constantly trust in the Lord;[hs]
because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
So my heart rejoices
and I am happy;[ht]
my life is safe.[hu]
10 You will not abandon me[hv] to Sheol;[hw]
you will not allow your faithful follower[hx] to see[hy] the Pit.[hz]
11 You lead me in[ia] the path of life.[ib]
I experience absolute joy in your presence;[ic]
you always give me sheer delight.[id]
