Psalm 58-65

Psalm 58[a]

For the music director, according to the al-tashcheth style;[b] a prayer[c] of David.

58 Do you rulers really pronounce just decisions?[d]
Do you judge people[e] fairly?
No![f] You plan how to do what is unjust;[g]
you deal out violence in the earth.[h]
The wicked turn aside from birth;[i]
liars go astray as soon as they are born.[j]
Their venom is like that of a snake,[k]
like a deaf serpent[l] that does not hear,[m]
that does not respond to[n] the magicians,
or to a skilled snake charmer.
O God, break the teeth in their mouths!
Smash the jawbones of the lions, O Lord.
Let them disappear[o] like water that flows away.[p]
Let them wither like grass.[q]
Let them be[r] like a snail that melts away as it moves along.[s]
Let them be like[t] stillborn babies[u] that never see the sun.
Before the kindling is even placed under your pots,[v]
he[w] will sweep it away along with both the raw and cooked meat.[x]
10 The godly[y] will rejoice when they see vengeance carried out;
they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Then[z] observers[aa] will say,
“Yes indeed, the godly are rewarded.[ab]
Yes indeed, there is a God who judges[ac] in the earth.”

Psalm 59[ad]

For the music director, according to the al-tashcheth style;[ae] a prayer[af] of David, written when Saul sent men to surround his house and murder him.[ag]

59 Deliver me from my enemies, my God.
Protect me[ah] from those who attack me.[ai]
Deliver me from evildoers.[aj]
Rescue me from violent men.[ak]
For look, they wait to ambush me;[al]
powerful men stalk[am] me,
but not because I have rebelled or sinned, O Lord.[an]
Though I have done nothing wrong,[ao] they are anxious to attack.[ap]
Spring into action and help me. Take notice of me.[aq]
You, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies,[ar] the God of Israel,
rouse yourself and punish[as] all the nations.
Have no mercy on any treacherous evildoers. (Selah)
They return in the evening;
they growl[at] like dogs
and prowl around outside[au] the city.
Look, they hurl insults at me
and openly threaten to kill me,[av]
for they say,[aw]
“Who hears?”
But you, O Lord, laugh in disgust at them;[ax]
you taunt[ay] all the nations.
You are my source of strength. I will wait for you.[az]
For God is my refuge.[ba]
10 The God who loves me will help me;[bb]
God will enable me to triumph over[bc] my enemies.[bd]
11 Do not strike them dead suddenly,
because then my people might forget the lesson.[be]
Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down,
O Lord who shields us.[bf]
12 They speak sinful words.[bg]
So let them be trapped by their own pride
and by the curses and lies they speak.
13 Angrily wipe them out. Wipe them out so they vanish.
Let them know that God rules
over Jacob and to the ends of the earth. (Selah)
14 They return in the evening;
they growl[bh] like dogs
and prowl around outside[bi] the city.
15 They wander around looking for something to eat;
they refuse to sleep until they are full.[bj]
16 As for me, I will sing about your strength;
I will praise your loyal love in the morning.
For you are my refuge[bk]
and my place of shelter when I face trouble.[bl]
17 You are my source of strength. I will sing praises to you.[bm]
For God is my refuge,[bn] the God who loves me.[bo]

Psalm 60[bp]

For the music director, according to the shushan-eduth style;[bq] a prayer[br] of David written to instruct others.[bs] It was written when he fought against Aram Naharaim and Aram Zobah. That was when Joab turned back and struck down[bt] 12,000 Edomites[bu] in the Valley of Salt.[bv]

60 O God, you have rejected us.[bw]
You suddenly turned on us in your anger.[bx]
Please restore us![by]
You made the earth quake; you split it open.[bz]
Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall.[ca]
You have made your people experience hard times;[cb]
you have made us drink intoxicating wine.[cc]
You have given your loyal followers[cd] a rallying flag,
so that they might seek safety from the bow.[ce] (Selah)
Deliver by your power[cf] and answer me,[cg]
so that the ones you love may be safe.[ch]
God has spoken in his sanctuary:[ci]
“I will triumph. I will parcel out Shechem;
the Valley of Sukkoth I will measure off.[cj]
Gilead belongs to me,
as does Manasseh.[ck]
Ephraim is my helmet,[cl]
Judah my royal scepter.[cm]
Moab is my washbasin.[cn]
I will make Edom serve me.[co]
I will shout in triumph over Philistia.”[cp]
Who will lead me into the fortified city?
Who will bring me to Edom?[cq]
10 Have you not rejected us, O God?
O God, you do not go into battle with our armies.
11 Give us help against the enemy,
for any help men might offer is futile.[cr]
12 By God’s power we will conquer;[cs]
he will trample down[ct] our enemies.

Psalm 61[cu]

For the music director, to be played on a stringed instrument; written by David.

61 O God, hear my cry for help.
Pay attention to my prayer.
From the remotest place on earth[cv]
I call out to you in my despair.[cw]
Lead me[cx] up to a rocky summit where I can be safe.[cy]
Indeed,[cz] you are[da] my shelter,
a strong tower that protects me from the enemy.[db]
I will be a permanent guest in your home;[dc]
I will find shelter in the protection of your wings.[dd] (Selah)
For you, O God, hear my vows;
you grant me the reward that belongs to your loyal followers.[de]
Give the king long life.
Make his lifetime span several generations.[df]
May he reign[dg] forever before God.
Decree that your loyal love and faithfulness should protect him.[dh]
Then I will sing praises to your name continually,[di]
as I fulfill[dj] my vows day after day.

Psalm 62[dk]

For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David.

62 For God alone I patiently wait;[dl]
he is the one who delivers me.[dm]
He alone is my protector[dn] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[do] I will not be upended.[dp]
How long will you threaten[dq] a man like me?
All of you are murderers,[dr]
as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence.[ds]
They[dt] spend all their time planning how to bring their victim[du] down.[dv]
They love to use deceit;[dw]
they pronounce blessings with their mouths,
but inwardly they utter curses.[dx] (Selah)
Patiently wait for God alone, my soul![dy]
For he is the one who gives me hope.[dz]
He alone is my protector[ea] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[eb] I will not be shaken.
God delivers me and exalts me;
God is my strong protector and my shelter.[ec]
Trust in him at all times, you people!
Pour out your hearts before him.[ed]
God is our shelter. (Selah)
Men are nothing but a mere breath;
human beings are unreliable.[ee]
When they are weighed in the scales,
all of them together are lighter than air.[ef]
10 Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression.[eg]
Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery.[eh]
If wealth increases, do not become attached to it.[ei]
11 God has declared one principle;
two principles I have heard:[ej]
God is strong,[ek]
12 and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love.[el]
For you repay men for what they do.[em]

Psalm 63[en]

A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness.[eo]

63 O God, you are my God. I long for you.[ep]
My soul thirsts[eq] for you,
my flesh yearns for you,
in a dry and parched[er] land where there is no water.
Yes,[es] in the sanctuary I have seen you,[et]
and witnessed[eu] your power and splendor.
Because[ev] experiencing[ew] your loyal love is better than life itself,
my lips will praise you.
For this reason[ex] I will praise you while I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.[ey]
As with choice meat[ez] you satisfy my soul.[fa]
My mouth joyfully praises you,[fb]
whenever[fc] I remember you on my bed,
and think about you during the nighttime hours.
For you are my deliverer;[fd]
under your wings[fe] I rejoice.
My soul[ff] pursues you;[fg]
your right hand upholds me.
Enemies seek to destroy my life,[fh]
but they will descend into the depths of the earth.[fi]
10 Each one will be handed over to the sword;[fj]
their corpses will be eaten by jackals.[fk]
11 But the king[fl] will rejoice in God;
everyone who takes oaths in his name[fm] will boast,
for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up.[fn]

Psalm 64[fo]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

64 Listen to me,[fp] O God, as I offer my lament!
Protect[fq] my life from the enemy’s terrifying attacks.[fr]
Hide me from the plots of evil men,
from the crowd of evildoers.[fs]
They[ft] sharpen their tongues like swords;
they aim their arrows, a slanderous charge,[fu]
in order to shoot down the innocent[fv] in secluded places.
They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation.[fw]
They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed.[fx]
They plan how to hide[fy] snares,
and boast,[fz] “Who will see them?”[ga]
They devise[gb] unjust schemes;
they disguise[gc] a well-conceived plot.[gd]
Man’s inner thoughts cannot be discovered.[ge]
But God will shoot[gf] at them;
suddenly they will be[gg] wounded by an arrow.[gh]
Their slander will bring about their demise.[gi]
All who see them will shudder,[gj]
and all people will fear.[gk]
They will proclaim what God has done,[gl]
and reflect on his deeds.
10 The godly will rejoice in the Lord
and take shelter in him.
All the morally upright[gm] will boast.[gn]

Psalm 65[go]

For the music director, a psalm of David, a song.

65 Praise awaits you,[gp] O God, in Zion.
Vows made to you are fulfilled.
You hear prayers;[gq]
all people approach you.[gr]
Our record of sins overwhelms me,[gs]
but you forgive[gt] our acts of rebellion.
How blessed[gu] is the one whom you choose,
and allow to live in your palace courts.[gv]
May we be satisfied with the good things of your house—
your holy palace.[gw]
You answer our prayers by performing awesome acts of deliverance,
O God, our savior.[gx]
All the ends of the earth trust in you,[gy]
as well as those living across the wide seas.[gz]
You created the mountains by your power,[ha]
and demonstrated your strength.[hb]
You calmed the raging seas[hc]
and their roaring waves,
as well as the commotion made by the nations.[hd]
Even those living in the remotest areas are awestruck by your acts;[he]
you cause those living in the east and west to praise you.[hf]
You visit the earth and give it rain;[hg]
you make it rich and fertile.[hh]
God’s streams are full of water;[hi]
you provide grain for the people of the earth,[hj]
for you have prepared the earth in this way.[hk]
10 You saturate[hl] its furrows,
and soak[hm] its plowed ground.[hn]
With rain showers you soften its soil,[ho]
and make its crops grow.[hp]
11 You crown the year with your good blessings,[hq]
and you leave abundance in your wake.[hr]
12 The pastures in the wilderness glisten with moisture,[hs]
and the hills are clothed with joy.[ht]
13 The meadows are clothed with sheep,
and the valleys are covered with grain.
They shout joyfully, yes, they sing.
