I. Address
Chapter 1
Greeting.[a] 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the holy ones who are [in Ephesus][b] faithful in Christ Jesus:(A) 2 grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(B)
The Father’s Plan of Salvation. 3 [c]Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(C) who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,[d] 4 as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him.(D) In love 5 he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will,(E) 6 for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved.(F)
Fulfillment Through Christ. 7 In him we have redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace(G) 8 that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight,(H) 9 he has made known to us the mystery[e] of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him(I) 10 as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth.(J)
Inheritance Through the Spirit. 11 In him we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,(K) 12 so that we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped[f] in Christ. 13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed[g] with the promised holy Spirit,(L) 14 which is the first installment[h] of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.(M)
II. Unity of the Church in Christ
The Church as Christ’s Body.[i] 15 Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and of your love[j] for all the holy ones,(N) 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,(O) 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him.(P) 18 May the eyes of [your] hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones,(Q) 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the exercise of his great might,(R) 20 which he worked in Christ, raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens,(S) 21 far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come.(T) 22 And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,(U) 23 which is his body,[k] the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.(V)
Chapter 2[l]
Generosity of God’s Plan.[m] 1 (W)You were dead in your transgressions and sins[n] 2 in which you once lived following the age of this world,[o] following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient.(X) 3 All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest.(Y) 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, 5 (Z)even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ[p] (by grace you have been saved), 6 raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus,(AA) 7 that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.(AB) 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God;(AC) 9 it is not from works, so no one may boast.(AD) 10 For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.(AE)
One in Christ.[q] 11 Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by those called the circumcision, which is done in the flesh by human hands, 12 were at that time without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel[r] and strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.(AF) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ.(AG)
14 [s]For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh,(AH) 15 abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person[t] in place of the two, thus establishing peace,(AI) 16 and might reconcile both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it.(AJ) 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near,(AK) 18 for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.(AL)
19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God,(AM) 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,(AN) with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.[u] 21 Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;(AO) 22 in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.(AP)
III. World Mission of the Church
Chapter 3
Commission to Preach God’s Plan.[v] 1 Because of this,(AQ) I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ[w] [Jesus] for you Gentiles— 2 if, as I suppose, you have heard of the stewardship[x] of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit,(AR) 3 [namely, that] the mystery[y] was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly earlier.(AS) 4 When you read this you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to human beings in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,(AT) 6 that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.(AU)
7 Of this I became a minister by the gift of God’s grace that was granted me in accord with the exercise of his power.(AV) 8 To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ,(AW) 9 and to bring to light [for all][z] what is the plan of the mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all things,(AX) 10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the principalities and authorities[aa] in the heavens.(AY) 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness of speech and confidence of access through faith in him.(AZ) 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over my afflictions for you; this is your glory.(BA)
Prayer for the Readers.[ab] 14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[ac] in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,(BB) 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love,(BC) 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth,(BD) 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.(BE)
20 Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us,(BF) 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
