Beginning
46 1 A song of triumph or thanksgiving for the deliverance of Jerusalem, after Sennacherib with his army was driven away, or some other like sudden and marvelous deliverance by the mighty hand of God. 8 Whereby the Prophet commending this great benefit, doth exhort the faithful to give themselves wholly into the hand of God, doubting nothing but that under his protection they shall be safe against all the assaults of their enemies, because this is his delight to assuage the rage of the wicked, when they are most busy against the just.
To him that excelleth upon [a]Alamoth, a song committed to the sons of Korah.
1 God is our [b]hope and strength, and help in [c]troubles, ready to be found.
2 Therefore will not we [d]fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains fall into the midst of the sea,
3 Though the waters thereof [e]rage and be troubled, and the mountains shake at the surges of the same. Selah.
4 Yet there is a [f]River, whose stream shall make glad the City of God: even the Sanctuary of the Tabernacles of the most High.
5 God is in the midst of it: therefore shall it not be moved: God shall help it [g]very early.
6 When the nations raged, and the kingdoms were moved, God [h]thundered, and the earth melted.
7 The Lord of hosts is [i]with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
8 Come and behold the works of the Lord, [j]what desolations he hath made in the earth.
9 He maketh wars to cease unto the ends of the world, he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear, and burneth the chariots with fire.
10 Be [k]still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
47 1 The Prophet exhorteth all people to the worship of the true and everlasting God, commending the mercy of God toward the posterity of Jacob. 9 And after prophesieth of the kingdom of Christ in the time of the Gospel.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm committed to the sons of Korah.
1 All people [l]clap your hands; sing loud unto God with a joyful voice.
2 For the Lord is high, and terrible; a great King over all the earth.
3 He hath [m]subdued the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
4 He hath chosen [n]our inheritance for us: even the glory of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.
5 God is gone up with triumph, even the Lord with the [o]sound of the trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the king of all the earth: sing praises everyone that hath [p]understanding.
8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon his holy Throne.
9 The princes of the people are gathered unto the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the world belong to God: he [q]is greatly to be exalted.
48 1 A notable deliverance of Jerusalem from the hands of many kings is mentioned, for the which thanks are given to God, and the state of that city is praised, that hath God so presently at all times ready to defend them. This Psalm seemeth to be made in the time of Ahaz, Jehoshaphat, Asa, or Hezekiah: for in their times chiefly was the city by foreign princes assaulted.
[r]A song or Psalm committed to the sons of Korah.
1 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the [s]City of our God, even upon his holy Mountain.
2 Mount Zion, lying Northward, is fair in situation: it is the [t]joy of the whole earth, and the City of the great king.
3 In the palaces thereof God is known for a [u]refuge.
4 For lo, the kings were [v]gathered, and went together.
5 When they saw [w]it, they marveled: they were astonied, and suddenly driven back.
6 Fear came there upon them, and sorrow, as upon a woman in travail.
7 As with an East wind thou breakest the ships [x]of Tarshish, so were they destroyed.
8 As we have [y]heard, so have we seen in the City of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it forever. Selah.
9 We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God, in the midst of thy Temple.
10 O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the [z]world’s end: thy right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let [aa]mount Zion rejoice, and the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.
12 [ab]Compass about Zion, and go round about it, and tell the towers thereof.
13 Mark well the wall thereof: behold her towers, that ye may tell your posterity.
14 For this God is our God forever and ever, he shall be our guide unto the death.
49 1 The holy Ghost calleth all men to the consideration of man’s life, 7 showing them not to be most blessed that are most wealthy, and therefore not to be feared: but contrariwise he lifteth up our minds to consider how all things are ruled by God’s providence: 14 Who as he judgeth these worldly misers to everlasting torments, 15 so doth he preserve his, and will reward them in the day of the resurrection, 1 Thess. 1:6.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm committed to the sons of Korah.
1 Hear [ac]this all ye people: give ear, all ye that dwell in the world,
2 As well low as high, both rich and poor.
3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom, and the meditation of mine heart is of knowledge.
4 I will incline mine ear to a parable, and utter my grave matter upon the harp.
5 Wherefore should I [ad]fear in the evil days, when iniquity shall compass me about, as at mine heels?
6 They trust in their [ae]goods, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches.
7 Yet a man can by no means redeem his brother: he cannot give his ransom to God,
8 (So [af]precious is the redemption of their souls, [ag]and the continuance forever)
9 That he may live still forever, and not see the grave.
10 For he seeth that wise men [ah]die: and also that the ignorant and foolish perish, and leave their riches for [ai]others.
11 Yet they think their houses and their habitations shall continue forever, even from generation to generation, and [aj]call their lands by their names.
12 But man shall not continue in honor; he is like the [ak]beasts that die.
13 This their way uttereth their foolishness; yet their posterity [al]delight in their talk. Selah.
14 [am]Like sheep they lie in grave; [an]death devoureth them; and the righteous shall have domination over them in the [ao]morning; for their beauty shall consume, when they shall go from their house to grave.
15 But God shall deliver my soul from the power of the grave; [ap]for he will receive me. Selah.
16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, and when the glory of his house is increased.
17 (A)For he shall take nothing away, when he dieth, neither shall his pomp descend after him.
18 For while he lived, [aq]he rejoiced himself; and [ar]men will praise thee, when thou makest much of thyself.
19 [as][at]He shall enter into the generation of his fathers, [au]and they shall not live forever.
20 Man is in honor; and [av]understandeth not; he is like to beasts that perish.
50 1 Because the Church is always full of hypocrites, 8 which do imagine that God will be worshipped with outward ceremonies only without the heart: and especially the Jews were of this opinion, because of their figures and ceremonies of the Law, thinking that their sacrifices were sufficient. 21 Therefore the Prophet doth reprove this gross error, and pronounceth the Name of God to be blasphemed where holiness is set in ceremonies. 23 For he declareth the worship of God to be spiritual, whereof are two principal parts, invocation and thanksgiving.
A Psalm of [aw]Asaph.
1 The God of gods, even the Lord hath spoken and called the [ax]earth from the rising up of the Sun, unto the going down thereof.
2 Out of Zion, which is the [ay]perfection of beauty, hath God shined.
3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: [az]a fire shall devour before him, and a mighty tempest shall be moved round about him.
4 He shall call the heaven above, and [ba]the earth to judge his people.
5 Gather my [bb]Saints together unto me, those that make a covenant with me with [bc]sacrifice.
6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is Judge himself. Selah.
7 Hear, O my people and I will speak: hear, O Israel, and I will testify unto thee: for I am God, even thy God.
8 I will not [bd]reprove thee for thy sacrifices, or thy burnt offerings, that have not been continually before me.
9 I will take no bullock out of thine house, nor goats out of thy folds.
10 [be]For all the beasts of the forest are mine, and the beasts on a thousand mountains.
11 I know all the fowls on the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
12 If I be hungry, I will not tell thee: for the world is mine and all that therein is.
13 [bf]Will I eat the flesh of bulls? or drink the blood of goats?
14 Offer unto God praise, and [bg]pay thy vows unto the most High,
15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: so will I deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
16 But unto the wicked said God, [bh]What hast thou to do to declare mine ordinances, that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth,
17 Seeing thou hatest [bi]to be reformed, and hast cast my words behind thee?
18 For when thou seest a thief, [bj]thou runnest with him, and thou art partaker with the adulterers.
19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and with thy tongue thou forgest deceit.
20 Thou [bk]sittest, and speakest against thy brother, and slanderest thy mother’s son.
21 These things hast thou done, and I held my tongue: therefore thou thoughtest that I was like thee: but I will reprove thee, and [bl]set them in order before thee.
22 Oh consider this ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none that can deliver you.
23 He that offereth [bm]praise, shall glorify me: and to him that [bn]disposeth his way aright, will I [bo]show the salvation of God.
