Psalm 119:49-72

Zayin

49 Remember the word to Your slave,
[a]In which You have made me wait.
50 This is my (A)comfort in my affliction,
That Your word has [b]revived me.
51 The arrogant (B)utterly scoff at me,
Yet I do not (C)turn aside from Your law.
52 I have (D)remembered Your judgments from [c]of old, O Yahweh,
And comfort myself.
53 Burning (E)indignation has seized me because of the wicked,
Who (F)forsake Your law.
54 Your statutes have become my songs
In the house of my (G)sojourning.
55 I (H)remember (I)in the night Your name, O Yahweh,
So I keep Your law.
56 This has become mine,
[d]That I (J)observe Your precepts.

Heth

57 Yahweh is my (K)portion;
I have [e]promised to (L)keep Your words.
58 I have (M)sought to please Your face (N)with all my heart;
(O)Be gracious to me (P)according to Your [f]word.
59 I (Q)thought upon my ways
And I turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I hastened and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.
61 The (R)cords of the wicked have encircled me,
But I have (S)not forgotten Your law.
62 At (T)midnight I shall rise to give thanks to You
Because of Your (U)righteous judgments.
63 I am a (V)companion of all those who [g]fear You,
And of those who keep Your precepts.
64 (W)The earth, O Yahweh, is full of Your lovingkindness;
(X)Teach me Your statutes.

Teth

65 You have dealt well with Your slave,
O Yahweh, according to Your word.
66 Teach me good [h](Y)discernment and knowledge,
For I believe in Your commandments.
67 (Z)Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.
68 You are (AA)good and (AB)do good;
(AC)Teach me Your statutes.
69 The arrogant have (AD)smeared me with lying;
With all my heart I will (AE)observe Your precepts.
70 Their heart is [i](AF)covered with fat,
But I (AG)delight in Your law.
71 It is (AH)good for me that I was afflicted,
That I may learn Your statutes.
72 The (AI)law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Psalm 49

Why Should I Fear in Days of Evil?

For the choir director. Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm.

49 (A)Hear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all (B)inhabitants of the world,
Both [a](C)low and [b]high,
Rich and poor together.
My mouth will (D)speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be (E)discernment.
I will incline my ear to (F)a proverb;
(G)I will [c]express my (H)riddle on the harp.

Why should I (I)fear in days of evil,
When the iniquity of my [d]supplanters surrounds me,
Even those who (J)trust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
Truly, no man can (K)redeem his brother;
He cannot give to God a (L)ransom for him—
For (M)the redemption price for their soul is costly,
And it ceases forever—
That he should (N)live on eternally,
That he should not (O)see [e]corruption.

10 For he sees that even (P)wise men die;
The [f](Q)fool and the senseless alike perish
And (R)leave their wealth to others.
11 Their [g](S)inner thought is that their houses (T)are forever
And their dwelling places [h]from generation to generation;
They have (U)called their lands after their own names.
12 But (V)man in his honor will not endure;
He is like the animals that [i]perish.

13 This is the (W)way of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who (X)are pleased [j]with their words. [k]Selah.
14 As sheep they are appointed (Y)for Sheol;
Death will shepherd them;
And the (Z)upright shall have dominion over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for Sheol (AA)to consume,
Far away from his habitation.
15 But God will (AB)redeem my soul from the [l]power of Sheol,
For (AC)He will receive me. Selah.

16 Do not be afraid (AD)when a man becomes rich,
When the [m]glory of his house increases;
17 For when he dies he will not (AE)take any of it;
His [n]glory will not descend after him.
18 For while he lives he (AF)blesses his soul—
And men will praise you when you do well for yourself—
19 But his soul shall (AG)go to the generation of his fathers;
They will eternally not see (AH)light.
20 (AI)Man in his honor, but who does not understand,
Is (AJ)like the animals that [o]perish.

Psalm 53

There Is No One Who Does Good

For the choir director. According to [a]Mahalath. A [b]Maskil of David.

53 (A)The wicked fool says in his heart, “There is no God,”
They act corruptly, and commit abominable injustice;
(B)There is no one who does good.
God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there is (C)anyone who has insight,
Anyone who (D)seeks after God.
(E)Every one of them has turned back; together they have become [c]worthless;
There is no one who does good, not even one.

Do the workers of iniquity (F)not know,
Who eat up my people as they eat bread
And do not call upon God?
There they were in great dread (G)where no dread had been;
For God (H)scattered the bones of [d]him who encamped against you;
You (I)put them to shame, because (J)God had rejected them.
Oh, that (K)the salvation of Israel [e]would come out of Zion!
When God [f]restores His captive people,
[g]May Jacob rejoice, may Israel be glad.

1 Samuel 25:23-44

23 Then Abigail saw David; so she hurried and dismounted from her donkey and fell on her face [a]before David (A)and bowed herself to the ground. 24 And she fell at his feet and said, “On me [b]alone, my lord, be the blame. And please let your maidservant speak in your ears, and listen to the words of your maidservant. 25 Please do not let my lord [c]pay attention to this [d]vile man, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. [e]Nabal is his name, and wicked foolishness is with him; but I your maidservant did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent.

26 “So now, my lord, as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives, since Yahweh has restrained you from [f]shedding blood, and (B)from saving yourself by your own hand, so now, (C)let your enemies and those who seek evil against my lord, be as Nabal. 27 So now let (D)this [g]gift which your servant-woman has brought to my lord be given to the young men who [h]went about with my lord. 28 Please forgive (E)the transgression of your maidservant; for (F)Yahweh will certainly make for my lord an enduring house because my lord is (G)fighting the battles of Yahweh, and (H)evil will not be found in you all your days. 29 And should anyone rise up to pursue you and to seek your [i]life, then the [j]life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with Yahweh your God; but the [k]lives of your enemies (I)He will sling out [l]as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And it will be that when Yahweh does for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and (J)appoints you ruler over Israel, 31 then this will not [m]cause stumbling or a troubled heart to my lord, both by having shed blood without cause and by my lord having saved himself. (K)When Yahweh deals well with my lord, then remember your maidservant.”

32 Then David said to Abigail, “(L)Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me, 33 and blessed be your discernment, and blessed be you, (M)who have kept me this day from [n]bloodshed and from saving myself by my own hand. 34 Nevertheless, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, (N)who has restrained me from harming you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, surely there would not have been left to Nabal until the morning light as much as one [o]male.” 35 So David received from her hand what she had brought him and said to her, “(O)Go up to your house in peace. See, I have listened to your voice and [p](P)granted your request.”

36 Then Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding (Q)a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him, (R)for he was very drunk; so (S)she did not tell him anything small or great until the morning light. 37 But in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him so that he became as a stone. 38 Now it happened that about ten days later, (T)Yahweh smote Nabal, and he died.

Abigail Becomes David’s Wife

39 Then David heard that Nabal was dead, so he said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has (U)pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal and (V)has kept back His servant from evil. Yahweh has also returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent [q](W)a proposal to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 Then the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel and spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you to take you as his wife.” 41 And she arose (X)and bowed with her [r]face to the ground and said, “Behold, your maidservant is a servant-woman (Y)to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Then (Z)Abigail hurried and arose, and she rode on a donkey, with her five young women who [s]went about with her; and she went after the messengers of David and became his wife.

43 David had also taken Ahinoam of (AA)Jezreel, and (AB)they both became his wives.

44 Now Saul had given (AC)Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from (AD)Gallim.

Acts 14:19-28

19 But (A)Jews came from (B)Antioch and (C)Iconium, and after winning over the crowds and (D)stoning Paul, they were dragging him out of the city, supposing him to be dead. 20 But while (E)the disciples stood around him, he rose up and entered the city. The next day he went away with Barnabas to (F)Derbe. 21 And after they had (G)proclaimed the gospel to that city and had (H)made many disciples, they returned to (I)Lystra and to (J)Iconium and to (K)Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of (L)the disciples, encouraging them to continue in (M)the faith, and saying, “(N)Through many afflictions we must enter the kingdom of God.” 23 And when (O)they had appointed (P)elders for them in every church, having (Q)prayed with fasting, they (R)commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

The Return to Antioch

24 And when they passed through (S)Pisidia, they came into (T)Pamphylia. 25 And when they had spoken the word in (U)Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26 And from there they sailed to (V)Antioch, from (W)where they had been (X)committed to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled. 27 And when they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to (Y)report all things that God had done with them and [a]how He had opened a (Z)door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they spent not a little time with (AA)the disciples.

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Calms a Storm

35 (A)And on that day, when evening came, He *said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 [a]And leaving the crowd, they *took Him along with them (B)in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. 37 And a great windstorm *arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat so that the boat was already filling up. 38 And Jesus Himself was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion; and they *got Him up and *said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 And He woke up and (C)rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still.” And the wind died down and [b]it became [c]perfectly calm. 40 And He said to them, “Why are you so cowardly? (D)Do you still have no faith?” 41 And they became [d]very afraid and were saying to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
