Book of Common Prayer
Praise to the Creator and Preserver.
33 (A)Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;
Praise is (B)becoming to the upright.
2 Give thanks to the Lord with the (C)lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a (D)harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to Him a (E)new song;
Play skillfully with (F)a shout of joy.
4 For the word of the Lord (G)is upright,
And all His work is done (H)in faithfulness.
5 He (I)loves righteousness and justice;
The (J)earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.
6 By the (K)word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And (L)by the breath of His mouth (M)all their host.
7 He gathers the (N)waters of the sea together [a]as a heap;
He lays up the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let (O)all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world (P)stand in awe of Him.
9 For (Q)He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it [b]stood fast.
10 The Lord (R)nullifies the counsel of the nations;
He frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The (S)counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The (T)plans of His heart from generation to generation.
12 Blessed is the (U)nation whose God is the Lord,
The people whom He has (V)chosen for His own inheritance.
13 The Lord (W)looks from heaven;
He (X)sees all the sons of men;
14 From (Y)His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who (Z)fashions [c]the hearts of them all,
He who (AA)understands all their works.
16 (AB)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
17 A (AC)horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.
18 Behold, (AD)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who [d](AE)hope for His lovingkindness,
19 To (AF)deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive (AG)in famine.
20 Our soul (AH)waits for the Lord;
He is our (AI)help and our shield.
21 For our (AJ)heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us,
According as we have [e]hoped in You.
3 Moses went up to God, and (A)the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: 4 ‘(B)You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on (C)eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself. 5 Now then, (D)if you will indeed obey My voice and (E)keep My covenant, then you shall be (F)My [a]own possession among all the peoples, for (G)all the earth is Mine; 6 and you shall be to Me (H)a kingdom of priests and (I)a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”
7 (J)So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him. 8 (K)All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.
16 (A)So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were [a]thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the [b]foot of the mountain.
The Lord Visits Sinai
18 (B)Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it (C)in fire; and its smoke ascended like (D)the smoke of a furnace, and (E)the whole mountain [c]quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and (F)God answered him with [d]thunder. 20 (G)The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
As Living Stones
4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been (A)rejected by men, but is [a]choice and precious in the sight of God, 5 (B)you also, as living stones, [b]are being built up as a (C)spiritual house for a holy (D)priesthood, to (E)offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For this is contained in [c]Scripture:
“(F)Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a (G)precious corner stone,
And he who believes in [d]Him will not be [e]disappointed.”
7 (H)This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve,
8 and,
“(K)A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”;
(L)for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, (M)and to this doom they were also appointed.
9 But you are (N)a chosen race, a royal (O)priesthood, a (P)holy nation, (Q)a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you (R)out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 (S)for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
