Psalm 61[a]

Prayer of the King in Time of Danger

For the leader; with stringed instruments. Of David.

I

Hear my cry, O God,
    listen to my prayer!
From the ends of the earth[b] I call;
    my heart grows faint.
Raise me up, set me on a rock,
    for you are my refuge,
    a tower of strength against the foe.(A)
Let me dwell in your tent forever,
    take refuge in the shelter of your wings.(B)
Selah

II

    For you, O God, have heard my vows,
    you have granted me the heritage of those who revere your name.
Add days to the life of the king;
    may his years be as from generation to generation;(C)
(D)May he reign before God forever;
    send your love and fidelity[c] to preserve him—(E)
I will duly sing to your name forever,
    fulfill my vows day after day.

Psalm 62[d]

Trust in God Alone

For the leader; ‘al Jeduthun.[e] A psalm of David.

I

My soul rests in God alone,(F)
    from whom comes my salvation.
God alone is my rock and salvation,
    my fortress; I shall never fall.
How long will you set yourself against a man?
    You shall all be destroyed,
Like a sagging wall
    or a tumbled down fence!
Even highly placed people
    plot to overthrow him.
They delight in lies;
    they bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse.(G)
Selah

II

My soul, be at rest in God alone,
    from whom comes my hope.
God alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not fall.
My deliverance and honor are with God,(H)
    my strong rock;
    my refuge is with God.
Trust God at all times, my people!
    Pour out your hearts to God our refuge!
Selah

III

10 Mortals are a mere breath,
    the sons of man but an illusion;(I)
On a balance they rise;[f]
    together they weigh nothing.
11 Do not trust in extortion;
    in plunder put no empty hope.
On wealth that increases,
    do not set your heart.(J)
12 [g]One thing God has said;
    two things I have heard:(K)
Strength belongs to God;
13     so too, my Lord, does mercy,
For you repay each man
    according to his deeds.(L)

Psalm 112

Psalm 112[a]

The Blessings of the Just

Hallelujah!

Blessed the man who fears the Lord,
    who greatly delights in his commands.(A)
His descendants shall be mighty in the land,
    a generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches shall be in his house;
    his righteousness[b] shall endure forever.
Light shines through the darkness for the upright;(B)
    gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
It is good for the man gracious in lending,
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For he shall never be shaken;
    the righteous shall be remembered forever.(C)
He shall not fear an ill report;
    his heart is steadfast, trusting the Lord.
His heart is tranquil, without fear,
    till at last he looks down on his foes.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
    his righteousness shall endure forever;(D)
    his horn[c] shall be exalted in honor.
10 The wicked sees and is angry;
    gnashes his teeth and wastes away;
    the desire of the wicked come to nothing.

Psalm 115

Psalm 115[a]

The Greatness of the True God

I

Not to us, Lord, not to us
    but to your name give glory
    because of your mercy and faithfulness.(A)
Why should the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”[b](B)
Our God is in heaven
    and does whatever he wills.(C)

II

Their idols are silver and gold,(D)
    the work of human hands.(E)
They have mouths but do not speak,
    eyes but do not see.
They have ears but do not hear,
    noses but do not smell.
They have hands but do not feel,
    feet but do not walk;
    they produce no sound from their throats.
Their makers will be like them,
    and anyone who trusts in them.

III

[c]The house of Israel trusts in the Lord,(F)
    who is their help and shield.(G)
10 The house of Aaron trusts in the Lord,
    who is their help and shield.
11 Those who fear the Lord trust in the Lord,
    who is their help and shield.
12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us,
    will bless the house of Israel,
    will bless the house of Aaron,
13 Will bless those who fear the Lord,
    small and great alike.
14 May the Lord increase your number,
    yours and your descendants.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    maker of heaven and earth.
16 [d]The heavens belong to the Lord,
    but he has given the earth to the children of Adam.(H)
17 [e]The dead do not praise the Lord,
    not all those go down into silence.(I)
18 It is we who bless the Lord,
    both now and forever.
Hallelujah!

Isaiah 11:1-9

Chapter 11[a]

The Ideal Davidic King[b]

But a shoot shall sprout from the stump[c] of Jesse,
    and from his roots a bud shall blossom.(A)
[d]The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him:(B)
    a spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
A spirit of counsel and of strength,
    a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord,
    and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord.
Not by appearance shall he judge,
    nor by hearsay shall he decide,
But he shall judge the poor with justice,
    and decide fairly for the land’s afflicted.(C)
He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked.(D)
Justice shall be the band around his waist,
    and faithfulness a belt upon his hips.(E)
[e]Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb,
    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat;
The calf and the young lion shall browse together,
    with a little child to guide them.(F)
The cow and the bear shall graze,
    together their young shall lie down;
    the lion shall eat hay like the ox.(G)
The baby shall play by the viper’s den,
    and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.
They shall not harm or destroy on all my holy mountain;
    for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord,
    as water covers the sea.

Revelation 20:1-10

Chapter 20

The Thousand-year Reign. [a]Then I saw an angel come down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the abyss[b] and a heavy chain.(A) He seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the Devil or Satan,[c] and tied it up for a thousand years(B) and threw it into the abyss, which he locked over it and sealed, so that it could no longer lead the nations astray until the thousand years are completed. After this, it is to be released for a short time.

Then I saw thrones; those who sat on them were entrusted with judgment. I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, and who had not worshiped the beast or its image nor had accepted its mark[d] on their foreheads or hands. They came to life and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years.(C) The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were over. This is the first resurrection. Blessed[e] and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over these; they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for [the] thousand years.

[f]When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison. He will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog,[g] to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.(D) They invaded the breadth of the earth[h] and surrounded the camp of the holy ones and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them.(E) 10 The Devil who had led them astray was thrown into the pool of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The Large White Throne.[i]

John 5:30-47

30 “I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.(A)

Witnesses to Jesus. 31 (B)“If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony cannot be verified. 32 But there is another[a] who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true. 33 You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth.(C) 34 I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved.(D) 35 He was a burning and shining lamp,[b] and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light.(E) 36 But I have testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.(F) 37 Moreover, the Father who sent me has testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(G) 38 and you do not have his word remaining in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.(H) 39 You search[c] the scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf.(I) 40 But you do not want to come to me to have life.

Unbelief of Jesus’ Hearers. 41 “I do not accept human praise;[d] 42 moreover, I know that you do not have the love of God in you.(J) 43 I came in the name of my Father, but you do not accept me; yet if another comes in his own name, you will accept him.(K) 44 How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God?(L) 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope.(M) 46 For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me.(N) 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
