Psalm 20-21

A Prayer for the King

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

20 May the Lord answer you in ·times [L the day] of ·trouble [distress].
    May the name of the God of Jacob ·protect [defend; provide refuge for] you [Num. 6:24].
May he send you help from ·his Temple [L the sanctuary]
    and support you from Mount Zion [C location of the Temple].
May he remember all your ·offerings [gifts; tributes; grain offerings; Lev. 2]
    and ·accept [look with favor on] all your ·sacrifices [L whole burnt offerings; Lev. 1]. ·Selah [Interlude]
May he give you ·what you want [L all your heart]
    and ·make all your plans succeed [L fulfill all your plans],
and we will shout for joy when you ·succeed [are victorious; C as in battle],
    and we will raise a ·flag [banner] in the name of our God.
May the Lord ·give you [fulfill] all that you ask for.

Now I know the Lord ·helps [saves; gives victory to] his ·appointed king [anointed].
    He answers him from his holy heaven
    and ·saves him [gives him victory] with his strong right hand.
Some ·trust in [boast in; rely on] chariots, others in horses,
    but we ·trust [boast in; rely on] the name of the Lord our God [Is. 2:7].
They ·are overwhelmed and defeated [collapse and fall],
    but we ·march forward and win [L rise and stand erect].
Lord, ·save [give victory to] the king!
    Answer us when we call for help.

Thanksgiving for the King

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

21 Lord, the king rejoices because of your strength;
    he is so happy when you ·save him [give him victory/help]!
You gave the king ·what he wanted [L the desire of his heart]
    and did not ·refuse [withhold] ·what he asked for [L the request of his lips]. ·Selah [Interlude]

You put ·good things [rich blessings] before him
    and placed a gold crown on his head.
He asked you for life,
    and you gave it to him,
    ·so his years go on and on [L length of days forever and ever].
He has great glory because you gave him ·victories [help];
    you gave him ·honor [splendor] and ·praise [majesty].
You ·always [forever] gave him blessings;
    you made him glad because ·you were with him [L of the joy of your presence].
The king truly ·trusts [has confidence in] the Lord.
    Because God Most High always ·loves [is loyal toward] him,
    he will not be ·overwhelmed [moved].
Your hand ·is against [L will find out] all your enemies;
    ·those who hate you will feel your power [L your right hand will find out those who hate you].
When ·you [L the Lord] appear,
    you will burn them as in a furnace.
In your anger you will swallow them up,
    and fire will burn them up.
10 You will destroy their ·families [offspring] from the earth;
    their ·children [L seed] will not live.
11 They made evil plans against you,
    but ·their traps [L the schemes they devise] won’t ·work [succeed].
12 You will make them turn their backs
    when you aim your arrows at ·them [L their faces].
13 Be ·supreme [exalted], Lord, in your power.
    We sing and praise your ·greatness [strength].

Psalm 110

The Lord Appoints a King

A psalm of David.

110 ·The Lord said [L Utterance/Oracle of the Lord] to my Lord,
    “Sit at my right ·side [L hand]
    until I put your enemies under your ·control [L feet; Matt. 22:44; 26:64; Mark 12:36; 16:19; Luke 20:42–44; 22:59; Acts 2:34–35; Rom. 8:34; 1 Cor. 15:25; Eph. 1:20; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12–13; 12:2].”
The Lord will ·enlarge [L send] ·your kingdom [L the scepter of your strength; C symbol of royal power] beyond ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C location of the Temple],
    and ·you will rule over [L give you dominion in the midst of] your enemies.
Your people will ·join [freely offer themselves to] you on ·your day of battle [L the day of your power/army].
    You have been dressed in ·holiness [splendor of holiness] from ·birth [L the womb of dawn];
    you have the ·freshness of a child [L dew of your youth].

The Lord has made a promise
    and will not ·change his mind [waver].
He said, “You are a priest forever,
    a priest like Melchizedek [C in reference to an ancient priest-king in Jerusalem; ultimately fulfilled in Christ; Gen. 14:18; Heb. 5:6; 7:17, 21].”

The Lord is ·beside you to help you [L by your right hand].
    ·When he becomes angry [L In the day of his anger], he will ·crush [shatter] kings.
He will judge those nations, filling them with ·dead bodies [corpses];
    he will ·defeat rulers [L crush/shatter heads] ·all over the [L throughout the wide] world.
·The king [or The Lord; L He] will drink from the brook on the way.
    Then he will ·be strengthened [L lift up his head].

Psalm 116-117

Thanksgiving for Escaping Death

116 I love the Lord,
    because he ·listens to my prayers for help [L hears/or heard my voice, my prayer of supplication].
He ·paid attention [L extends his ear] to me,
    so I will ·call to him for help [call; pray] ·as long as I live [L in my days].
The ·ropes [cords] of death ·bound [encompass] me,
    and the ·fear [hardship; distress] of ·the grave [L Sheol; C the grave or the underworld] ·took hold of [reached; found] me.
    I ·was troubled and sad [L found distress and sadness].
Then I ·called out [prayed in] the name of the Lord.
    I said, “Please, Lord, ·save [rescue] me!”

The Lord is ·kind [gracious] and ·does what is right [righteous];
    our God is ·merciful [compassionate; Ex. 34:6–7].
The Lord ·watches over [keeps; guards] the ·foolish [immature; simpleminded];
    when I was ·helpless [brought low], he ·saved me [gave me victory].
I said to myself, “·Relax [L Return, my soul/life to your rest],
    because the Lord ·takes care of you [treats you well].”
Lord, you ·saved [rescued] me from death.
    ·You stopped my eyes from crying [L …and my eyes from tears];
    ·you kept me from being defeated [L …my feet from stumbling].
So I will walk ·with [before; in the presence of] the Lord
    in the land of the living [C as opposed to the grave].
10 I ·believed [trusted], so I said,
    “I am ·completely ruined [afflicted greatly; 2 Cor. 4:13].”
11 In my ·distress [worry] I said,
    “All people are liars [Rom. 3:4].”

12 What can I ·give [L return to] the Lord
    for all the ·good things [benefits] he has given to me?
13 I will lift up the cup of salvation,
    and I will pray ·to [L in the name of] the Lord.
14 I will ·give the Lord what I promised [pay my vow to the Lord]
    in front of all his people.

15 The death of ·one that belongs to the Lord [his loyal ones/saints]
    is precious in his ·sight [L eyes].
16 Lord, I am your servant;
    I am your servant and the son of your female servant.
    You have ·freed me from [loosened] my chains.
17 I will give you ·an offering to show thanks to you [a thanksgiving offering],
    and I will pray ·to [L in the name of] the Lord.
18 I will ·give the Lord what I promised [pay my vow to the Lord]
    in front of all his people,
19 in the ·Temple courtyards [L courtyards of the house of the Lord]
    in your midst, Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord!

A Hymn of Praise

117 All you nations, praise the Lord.
    All you people, ·praise [extol] him
because ·the Lord loves us very much [L great is his loyalty/love toward us],
    and his ·truth [faithfulness] is everlasting.

Praise the Lord!

Job 9:1

Job Answers Bildad

Then Job answered:

Job 10:1-9

10 “I ·hate [am disgusted with] my life,
    so I will ·complain without holding back [L abandon myself to my sighs];
    I will speak ·because I am so unhappy [L in my bitterness].
I will say to God: Do not ·hold [declare] me guilty,
    but tell me ·what you have against [why you accuse] me.
·Does it make you happy [or Is it right for you] to ·trouble [oppress] me?
    ·Don’t you care about [L Must you despise] me, the work of your hands?
    ·Are you happy with [or Do you favor] the plans of evil people?
Do you have ·human eyes [L eyes of flesh]
    that see ·as we see [L with human vision]?
Are your days like the days of humans,
    and your years like our years?
[L For] You ·look for the evil I have done [L investigate my transgression]
    and search for my sin.
You know I am not guilty,
    but no one can ·save [rescue] me from your ·power [L hand].

“Your hands shaped and made me.
    Do you now turn around and ·destroy [L swallow] me?
Remember that you molded me like a piece of clay.
    Will you now turn me back into dust [Gen. 2:7; Eccl. 12:7]?

Job 10:16-22

16 ·If I hold up my head, you hunt me like a lion [or Proud like a lion you hunt me]
    and again show your terrible power against me.
17 You bring new witnesses against me
    and increase your anger against me.
    Your armies come against me.

18 “So why did you ·allow me to be born [L bring me out of the womb]?
    ·I wish I had died [L Why did I not die…?] before ·anyone [L any eye] saw me.
19 I wish I had never lived,
    but had been carried straight from ·birth [L womb] to the grave.
20 The few days of my life are almost over.
    Leave me alone so I can have a moment of joy [Eccl. 2:24–26; 3:12–14, 22; 8:15; 5:19–20; 9:7–10].
21 Soon I will leave; I will not return
    from the land of darkness and gloom,
22 the land of ·darkest night [or dimness and blackness],
    from the land of gloom and ·confusion [chaos],
    where even the light is darkness.”

Acts 11:1-18

Peter Returns to Jerusalem

11 The apostles and the ·believers [L brothers] in Judea heard that some Gentiles had accepted ·God’s teaching [L the word of God] too. But when Peter ·came [went up] to Jerusalem, ·some people [L the circumcised; C Jewish Christians who believed that they should continue to obey certain Jewish regulations] ·argued with [criticized] him. They said, “You went into the homes of people who are not circumcised and ate with them!”

So Peter ·started from the beginning [or began speaking] and explained ·the whole story [it in order/step by step] to them. He said, “I was in the city of Joppa [9:36], and as I was praying, I had a vision while in a trance [10:10]. I saw ·something [L an object] that looked like a big sheet being lowered from heaven by its four corners. It came very close to me. I looked [intently] inside it and saw ·animals [L four-footed creatures], wild beasts, reptiles, and birds [L of the sky/air]. I heard a voice say to me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘·No [Absolutely not], Lord! I have never eaten anything that is unholy [profane; common] or ·unclean [ritually defiled; 10:14].’ But the voice from heaven spoke again, ‘God has made these things clean, so don’t call them ·unholy [profane; common].’ 10 This happened three times. Then the whole thing was ·taken back [or pulled up] to heaven. 11 Right then [L look; T behold] three men who were sent to me from Caesarea came to the house where I was staying [10:17–19]. 12 The Spirit told me to go with them without ·doubting [or hesitation]. These six ·believers [L brothers] here also ·went with [accompanied] me, and we entered the house of ·Cornelius [L the man]. 13 He told us about the angel he saw standing in his house. The angel said to him, ‘Send some men to Joppa and ·invite [summon; send for] Simon [L who is also called] Peter to come. 14 By the ·words [message] he will say to you, you and all your ·family [or household] will be saved.’ 15 When I began ·my speech [L to speak], the Holy Spirit ·came [L fell] on them just as he came on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the words of the Lord. He said, ‘John baptized ·with [or in] water, but you will be baptized ·with [or in; or by] the Holy Spirit [1:5; Matt. 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16].’ 17 [L Therefore] Since God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I ·stop [prevent; hinder] the work of God?”

18 When ·the believers [L they] heard this, they ·stopped arguing [ceased their objections; remained silent]. They ·praised [glorified] God and said, “So God ·is allowing [has given] even ·other nations [the Gentiles] ·to turn to him and live [L repentance (leading) to life].”

John 8:12-20

Jesus Is the Light of the World

12 Later, Jesus talked to the people again, saying, “I am the light of the world [C the Feast of Shelters included a lamp lighting ritual that Jesus may be alluding to; 7:37–39]. The person who follows me will never ·live [L walk] in darkness but will have the light ·that gives life [L of life].”

13 The Pharisees [see 1:24] said to Jesus, “When you ·talk [testify; witness] about yourself, ·you are the only one to say these things are true. We cannot accept what you say [L your testimony/witness is not true/valid; 5:31].”

14 Jesus answered, “Yes, I am ·saying these things [witnessing; testifying] about myself, but they are true [valid]. I know where I came from [C from the Father or “from above”] and where I am going. But you don’t know where I came from or where I am going. 15 You judge ·by human standards [T according to the flesh; C rather than guided by the Spirit]. I am not judging anyone. 16 But ·when [if] I do judge, ·I judge truthfully [L my judgment is true], because I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me. 17 Your own law says that ·when two witnesses say the same thing, you must accept what they say [L the testimony of two witnesses is true/valid; Deut. 17:6; 19:15]. 18 I am one of the witnesses who speaks about myself, and the Father who sent me is the other witness.”

19 [L Therefore] They asked him, “Where is your father?”

Jesus answered, “You don’t know me or my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father, too.” 20 Jesus said these things while he was teaching in the Temple [courts], near ·where the money is kept [the treasury; offering box]. But no one ·arrested [seized] him, because ·the right time for him [L his hour; see 2:4] had not yet come.
