Psalm 34

Praise God Who Judges and Saves

David’s song from the time he acted crazy so Abimelech would send him away, and David did leave.

34 I will praise the Lord at all times;
    his praise is always on my lips.
My whole being praises the Lord.
    The poor will hear and be glad.
Glorify the Lord with me,
    and let us praise his name together.

I asked the Lord for help, and he answered me.
    He saved me from all that I feared.
Those who go to him for help are happy,
    and they are never disgraced.
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him
    and saved him from all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord camps around those who fear God,
    and he saves them.

Examine and see how good the Lord is.
    Happy is the person who trusts him.
You who belong to the Lord, fear him!
    Those who fear him will have everything they need.
10 Even lions may get weak and hungry,
    but those who look to the Lord will have every good thing.
11 Children, come and listen to me.
    I will teach you to worship the Lord.
12 You must do these things
    to enjoy life and have many happy days.
13 You must not say evil things,
    and you must not tell lies.
14 Stop doing evil and do good.
    Look for peace and work for it.

15 The Lord sees the good people
    and listens to their prayers.
16 But the Lord is against those who do evil;
    he makes the world forget them.
17 The Lord hears good people when they cry out to him,
    and he saves them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,
    and he saves those whose spirits have been crushed.

19 People who do what is right may have many problems,
    but the Lord will solve them all.
20 He will protect their very bones;
    not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil will kill the wicked;
    those who hate good people will be judged guilty.
22 But the Lord saves his servants’ lives;
    no one who trusts him will be judged guilty.

Isaiah 49:1-6

God Calls His Special Servant

49 All of you people in faraway places, listen to me.
    Listen, all you nations far away.
Before I was born, the Lord called me to serve him.
    The Lord named me while I was still in my mother’s womb.
He made my tongue like a sharp sword.
    He hid me in the shadow of his hand.
He made me like a sharp arrow.
    He hid me in the holder for his arrows.
He told me, “Israel, you are my servant.
    I will show my glory through you.”
But I said, “I have worked hard for nothing;
    I have used all my power, but I did nothing useful.
But the Lord will decide what my work is worth;
    God will decide my reward.”
The Lord made me in the body of my mother
    to be his servant,
to lead the people of Jacob back to him
    so that Israel might be gathered to him.
The Lord will honor me,
    and I will get my strength from my God.
Now he told me,
“You are an important servant to me
    to bring back the tribes of Jacob,
    to bring back the people of Israel who are left alive.
But, more importantly, I will make you a light for all nations
    to show people all over the world the way to be saved.”

1 Corinthians 4:1-16

Apostles Are Servants of Christ

People should think of us as servants of Christ, the ones God has trusted with his secrets. Now in this way those who are trusted with something valuable must show they are worthy of that trust. As for myself, I do not care if I am judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. I know of no wrong I have done, but this does not make me right before the Lord. The Lord is the One who judges me. So do not judge before the right time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light things that are now hidden in darkness, and will make known the secret purposes of people’s hearts. Then God will praise each one of them.

Brothers and sisters, I have used Apollos and myself as examples so you could learn through us the meaning of the saying, “Follow only what is written in the Scriptures.” Then you will not be more proud of one person than another. Who says you are better than others? What do you have that was not given to you? And if it was given to you, why do you brag as if you did not receive it as a gift?

You think you already have everything you need. You think you are rich. You think you have become kings without us. I wish you really were kings so we could be kings together with you. But it seems to me that God has put us apostles in last place, like those sentenced to die. We are like a show for the whole world to see—angels and people. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are very wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You receive honor, but we are shamed. 11 Even to this very hour we do not have enough to eat or drink or to wear. We are often beaten, and we have no homes in which to live. 12 We work hard with our own hands for our food. When people curse us, we bless them. When they hurt us, we put up with it. 13 When they tell evil lies about us, we speak nice words about them. Even today, we are treated as though we were the garbage of the world—the filth of the earth.

14 I am not trying to make you feel ashamed. I am writing this to give you a warning as my own dear children. 15 For though you may have ten thousand teachers in Christ, you do not have many fathers. Through the Good News I became your father in Christ Jesus, 16 so I beg you, please follow my example.

Psalm 96

Praise for the Lord’s Glory

96 Sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord and praise his name;
    every day tell how he saves us.
Tell the nations of his glory;
    tell all peoples the miracles he does,

because the Lord is great; he should be praised at all times.
    He should be honored more than all the gods,
because all the gods of the nations are only idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
The Lord has glory and majesty;
    he has power and beauty in his Temple.

Praise the Lord, all nations on earth;
    praise the Lord’s glory and power.
Praise the glory of the Lord’s name.
    Bring an offering and come into his Temple courtyards.
Worship the Lord because he is holy.
    Tremble before him, everyone on earth.
10 Tell the nations, “The Lord is king.”
    The earth is set, and it cannot be moved.
    He will judge the people fairly.
11 Let the skies rejoice and the earth be glad;
    let the sea and everything in it shout.
12 Let the fields and everything in them rejoice.
Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy
13 before the Lord, because he is coming.
    He is coming to judge the world;
he will judge the world with fairness
    and the peoples with truth.

Psalm 100

A Call to Praise the Lord

A psalm of thanks.

100 Shout to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with joy;
    come before him with singing.
Know that the Lord is God.
    He made us, and we belong to him;
    we are his people, the sheep he tends.

Come into his city with songs of thanksgiving
    and into his courtyards with songs of praise.
    Thank him and praise his name.
The Lord is good. His love is forever,
    and his loyalty goes on and on.

John 1:35-42

The First Followers of Jesus

35 The next day John[a] was there again with two of his followers. 36 When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”[b]

37 The two followers heard John say this, so they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following him, he asked, “What are you looking for?”

They said, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (“Rabbi” means “Teacher.”)

39 He answered, “Come and see.” So the two men went with Jesus and saw where he was staying and stayed there with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

40 One of the two men who followed Jesus after they heard John speak about him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, “We have found the Messiah.” (“Messiah” means “Christ.”)

42 Then Andrew took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (“Cephas” means “Peter.”[c])
