Psalm 147

Psalm 147[a]

God’s Word Restores Jerusalem

Hallelujah!

I

How good to sing praise to our God;
    how pleasant to give fitting praise.(A)
The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem,
    and gathers the dispersed of Israel,(B)
Healing the brokenhearted,
    and binding up their wounds.(C)
He numbers the stars,
    and gives to all of them their names.(D)
Great is our Lord, vast in power,
    with wisdom beyond measure.(E)
The Lord gives aid to the poor,
    but casts the wicked to the ground.(F)

II

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    with the lyre make music to our God,(G)
[b]Who covers the heavens with clouds,
    provides rain for the earth,
    makes grass sprout on the mountains,(H)
Who gives animals their food
    and young ravens what they cry for.(I)
10 [c]He takes no delight in the strength of horses,
    no pleasure in the runner’s stride.(J)
11 Rather the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    those who put their hope in his mercy.

III

12 Glorify the Lord, Jerusalem;
    Zion, offer praise to your God,
13 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates,
    blessed your children within you.(K)
14 He brings peace to your borders,
    and satisfies you with finest wheat.(L)
15 [d]He sends his command to earth;
    his word runs swiftly!(M)
16 Thus he makes the snow like wool,
    and spreads the frost like ash;(N)
17 He disperses hail like crumbs.
    Who can withstand his cold?
18 Yet when again he issues his command, it melts them;
    he raises his winds and the waters flow.
19 He proclaims his word to Jacob,
    his statutes and laws to Israel.(O)
20 He has not done this for any other nation;
    of such laws they know nothing.
Hallelujah!

Deuteronomy 26:1-11

Chapter 26

Thanksgiving for the Harvest. (A)When you have come into the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you as a heritage, and have taken possession and settled in it, you shall take some first fruits(B) of the various products of the soil which you harvest from the land the Lord, your God, is giving you; put them in a basket and go to the place which the Lord, your God, will choose as the dwelling place for his name. There you shall go to the priest in office at that time and say to him, “Today I acknowledge to the Lord, my God, that I have indeed come into the land which the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.”(C) The priest shall then take the basket from your hands and set it in front of the altar of the Lord, your God. Then you shall declare in the presence of the Lord, your God, “My father was a refugee Aramean[a] who went down to Egypt with a small household and lived there as a resident alien.(D) But there he became a nation great, strong and numerous. (E)When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us, imposing harsh servitude upon us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our cry and saw our affliction, our toil and our oppression. Then the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and outstretched arm, with terrifying power, with signs and wonders,(F) and brought us to this place, and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.(G) 10 Now, therefore, I have brought the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, Lord, have given me.” You shall set them before the Lord, your God, and you shall bow down before the Lord, your God. 11 Then you and your household, together with the Levite and the resident aliens who live among you, shall celebrate with all these good things which the Lord, your God, has given you.(H)

John 6:26-35

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life,[a] which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.”(A) 28 So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” 30 So they said to him, “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?(B) 31 [b]Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written:(C)

‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

32 So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.(D) 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 (E)So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 [c]Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.(F)

Psalm 145

Psalm 145[a]

The Greatness and Goodness of God

Praise. Of David.

I will extol you, my God and king;
    I will bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you;
    I will praise your name forever and ever.(A)
Great is the Lord and worthy of much praise,(B)
    whose grandeur is beyond understanding.
One generation praises your deeds to the next
    and proclaims your mighty works.(C)
They speak of the splendor of your majestic glory,
    tell of your wonderful deeds.(D)
They speak of the power of your awesome acts
    and recount your great deeds.(E)
They celebrate your abounding goodness
    and joyfully sing of your justice.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and abounding in mercy.(F)
The Lord is good to all,
    compassionate toward all your works.(G)
10 All your works give you thanks, Lord
    and your faithful bless you.(H)
11 They speak of the glory of your reign
    and tell of your mighty works,
12 Making known to the sons of men your mighty acts,
    the majestic glory of your rule.
13 Your reign is a reign for all ages,
    your dominion for all generations.(I)
The Lord is trustworthy in all his words,
    and loving in all his works.
14 The Lord supports all who are falling
    and raises up all who are bowed down.(J)
15 The eyes of all look hopefully to you;
    you give them their food in due season.(K)
16 You open wide your hand
    and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is just in all his ways,
    merciful in all his works.(L)
18 The Lord is near to all who call upon him,
    to all who call upon him in truth.(M)
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
    he hears their cry and saves them.(N)
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
    but all the wicked he destroys.(O)
21 My mouth will speak the praises of the Lord;
    all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-24

Church Order. 12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who are laboring among you and who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you, 13 and to show esteem for them with special love on account of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

14 We urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, cheer the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one returns evil for evil; rather, always seek what is good [both] for each other and for all.(A) 16 Rejoice always. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.(B) 19 [a]Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophetic utterances. 21 Test everything; retain what is good. 22 Refrain from every kind of evil.

Concluding Prayer. 23 [b]May the God of peace himself make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.(C) 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it.
