Psalm 63

Psalm 63[a]

Ardent Longing for God

A psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.(A)

I

O God, you are my God—
    it is you I seek!
For you my body yearns;
    for you my soul thirsts,
In a land parched, lifeless,
    and without water.(B)
I look to you in the sanctuary
    to see your power and glory.
For your love is better than life;[b]
    my lips shall ever praise you!

II

I will bless you as long as I live;
    I will lift up my hands, calling on your name.
My soul shall be sated as with choice food,
    with joyous lips my mouth shall praise you!
I think of you upon my bed,
    I remember you through the watches of the night
You indeed are my savior,
    and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.(C)
My soul clings fast to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

III

10 But those who seek my life will come to ruin;
    they shall go down to the depths of the netherworld!
11     Those who would hand over my life to the sword shall
    become the prey of jackals!
12 But the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who swear by the Lord[c] shall exult,
    but the mouths of liars will be shut!(D)

Psalm 98

Psalm 98[a]

The Coming of God

A psalm.

I

Sing a new song to the Lord,
    for he has done marvelous deeds.(A)
His right hand and holy arm
    have won the victory.[b](B)
The Lord has made his victory known;
    has revealed his triumph in the sight of the nations,
He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness
    toward the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the victory of our God.

II

Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth;
    break into song; sing praise.
Sing praise to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and melodious song.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
    shout with joy to the King, the Lord.(C)

III

Let the sea and what fills it resound,(D)
    the world and those who dwell there.
Let the rivers clap their hands,
    the mountains shout with them for joy,(E)
(F)Before the Lord who comes,
    who comes to govern the earth,(G)
To govern the world with justice
    and the peoples with fairness.

Psalm 103

Psalm 103[a]

Praise of Divine Goodness

Of David.

I

Bless the Lord, my soul;
    all my being, bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, my soul;
    and do not forget all his gifts,
Who pardons all your sins,
    and heals all your ills,
Who redeems your life from the pit,(A)
    and crowns you with mercy and compassion,
Who fills your days with good things,
    so your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.[b]

II

The Lord does righteous deeds,
    brings justice to all the oppressed.(B)
He made known his ways to Moses,
    to the Israelites his deeds.
Merciful and gracious is the Lord,
    slow to anger, abounding in mercy.(C)
He will not always accuse,
    and nurses no lasting anger;
10 He has not dealt with us as our sins merit,
    nor requited us as our wrongs deserve.

III

11 For as the heavens tower over the earth,
    so his mercy towers over those who fear him.(D)
12 As far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our sins from us.
13 As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.
14 For he knows how we are formed,
    remembers that we are dust.(E)
15 As for man, his days are like the grass;
    he blossoms like a flower in the field.(F)
16 A wind sweeps over it and it is gone;
    its place knows it no more.
17 But the Lord’s mercy is from age to age,
    toward those who fear him.
His salvation is for the children’s children
18     of those who keep his covenant,
    and remember to carry out his precepts.

IV

19 The Lord has set his throne in heaven;
    his dominion extends over all.
20 Bless the Lord, all you his angels,(G)
    mighty in strength, acting at his behest,
    obedient to his command.
21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts,
    his ministers who carry out his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all his creatures,
    everywhere in his domain.
    Bless the Lord, my soul!

Isaiah 13:6-13

Howl, for the day of the Lord[a] is near;
    as destruction from the Almighty it comes.(A)
Therefore all hands fall helpless,(B)
    every human heart melts,
    and they are terrified,
Pangs and sorrows take hold of them,
    like a woman in labor they writhe;
They look aghast at each other,
    their faces aflame.(C)
Indeed, the day of the Lord comes,
    cruel, with wrath and burning anger;
To lay waste the land
    and destroy the sinners within it!(D)
10 The stars of the heavens and their constellations
    will send forth no light;
The sun will be dark at its rising,
    and the moon will not give its light.(E)
11 Thus I will punish the world for its evil
    and the wicked for their guilt.
I will put an end to the pride of the arrogant,
    the insolence of tyrants I will humble.(F)
12 I will make mortals more rare than pure gold,
    human beings, than the gold of Ophir.[b](G)
13 For this I will make the heavens tremble
    and the earth shall be shaken from its place,
At the wrath of the Lord of hosts
    on the day of his burning anger.(H)

Hebrews 12:18-29

18 [a]You have not approached that which could be touched[b](A) and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm 19 and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them,(B) 20 for they could not bear to hear the command: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.”(C) 21 Indeed, so fearful was the spectacle that Moses said, “I am terrified and trembling.”(D) 22 No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering,(E) 23 and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven,[c] and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect,(F) 24 and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently[d] than that of Abel.(G)

25 See that you do not reject the one who speaks. For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much more in our case if we turn away from the one who warns from heaven.(H) 26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, “I will once more shake not only earth but heaven.”(I) 27 That phrase, “once more,” points to [the] removal of shaken, created things, so that what is unshaken may remain.(J) 28 Therefore, we who are receiving the unshakable kingdom should have gratitude, with which we should offer worship pleasing to God in reverence and awe.(K) 29 For our God is a consuming fire.(L)

John 3:22-30

Final Witness of the Baptist. 22 [a]After this, Jesus and his disciples went into the region of Judea, where he spent some time with them baptizing.(A) 23 John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim,[b] because there was an abundance of water there, and people came to be baptized, 24 [c](B)for John had not yet been imprisoned. 25 Now a dispute arose between the disciples of John and a Jew[d] about ceremonial washings. 26 So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.”(C) 27 John answered and said, “No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven.(D) 28 You yourselves can testify that I said [that] I am not the Messiah, but that I was sent before him.(E) 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man,[e] who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete.(F) 30 He must increase; I must decrease.”(G)
