Remember, O Lord, for David’s sake,
    all the difficulties he endured.^[b]
2 [c]He swore an oath to the Lord
    and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
³ “I will not enter the house I live in
    or lie down on the bed where I sleep,
⁴ neither will I allow myself to fall asleep
    or even to close my eyes,
⁵ until I find a home for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
⁶ We heard of it in Ephrathah;
    we came upon it^[d] in the fields of Jaar.
^7 [e]Let us enter his dwelling place,
    let us worship at his footstool.
⁸ Arise, O Lord, and go up to your resting place,
    you and the Ark of your might.
⁹ Let your priests clothe themselves with righteousness,^[f]
    and let your saints shout for joy.
¹⁰ For the sake of your servant David,
    do not reject your anointed one.^[g]
11 The Lord swore this oath^[h] to David,
    an oath that he will not renounce:
“One of your own descendants
    I will place on your throne.
¹² If your sons keep my covenant
    and the statutes that I will teach them,
their sons will also rule
    on your throne from age to age.”^[i]
13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
    he has designated it for his home:
¹⁴ “This will be my resting place forever;
    here I will reside, for such is my wish.
^15 [j]“I will bless it with abundant provisions
    and satisfy its poor with their fill of bread.
¹⁶ I will clothe its priests with salvation,
    and its saints will shout for joy.
¹⁷ “There I will raise up a horn for David^[k]
    and prepare a lamp for my anointed one.
¹⁸ I will clothe his enemies with shame,
    but on his head there will be a resplendent crown.”^[l]

¹ A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse,
    and a branch will grow from his roots.
² The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him:
    a Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a Spirit of counsel and power,
    a Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord,
³     and his delight will be the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by outward appearances
    or reach a verdict based on hearsay.
⁴ Rather, he will judge the poor with justice
    and render fair decisions for the weak and the poor.
He will strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
⁵ Righteousness will be the belt around his waist
    and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
⁶ Then the wolf will live alongside the lamb,
    and the leopard will lie down with the kid;
the calf and the young lion will browse together,
    with a little child to guide them.
⁷ The cow and the bear will graze side by side;
    their young will lie down together,
    and the lion will eat hay like the ox.
⁸ The infant will play by the cobra’s den,
    and the young child will lay his hand
    on the viper’s nest.
⁹ No injury or harm will occur
    on all my holy mountain;
for the earth will be filled with knowledge of the Lord
    just as water covers the sea.

¹⁰ On that day the root of Jesse
    will be established as a signal to the nations.
They will come forth to unite under him,
    and his dwelling will be glorious.

¹³ And again,

And again,

¹⁴ Therefore, since the children are all made of flesh and blood,^[b] Jesus likewise shared in the same flesh and blood, so that by his death he might destroy the one who has the power of death—that is, the devil— ¹⁵ and set free those who throughout their lives had been held in slavery by the fear of death.

¹⁶ For clearly he did not come to help angels but rather he came to help the descendants of Abraham. ¹⁷ Therefore, he had to be made like his brethren in every way in order that he might become a compassionate and faithful high priest before God and expiate the sins of the people. ¹⁸ Because he himself was tested by suffering, he is able to help those who are being tested.
