Psalm 95

Psalm 95[a]

A Call To Praise and Obey God

[b]Come, let us sing with jubilation to the Lord;
    let us cry out to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with our songs.
[c]For the Lord is the great God,
    the King who surpasses all other gods.[d]
In his hands are the depths of the earth,
    and the peaks of the mountains are his.
To him belongs the sea, for he created it,
    and also the dry land[e] that his hands have molded.
Come forth! Let us bow down to worship him;
    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.[f]
For he is our God,
    and we are the people he shepherds,[g]
    the flock he protects.
If only you would listen to his voice today:
    “Harden not your hearts as you did at Meribah,[h]
    as on the day of Massah in the wilderness.
It was there that your ancestors sought to tempt me;
    they put me to the test
    even though they had witnessed my works.[i]
10 “For forty years[j] I loathed that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they do not know my ways.’
11 Therefore, in my anger I swore,
    ‘They will never enter my rest.’ ”[k]

Psalm 88

Psalm 88[a]

Prayer in Affliction

A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah.[b] For the director. According to Mahalath. For singing. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

[c]Lord, the God of my salvation,
    day and night I cry out to you.
Let my prayer come before you;
    give ear to my cry for help.
[d]For my soul[e] is filled with misery,
    and my life draws near to the netherworld.
I am numbered among those who go down to the pit;[f]
    all strength has failed me.
I have been abandoned among the dead,
    like the slain who lie in the grave,
like those whom you remember no longer
    and whom your hand has abandoned.[g]
[h]You have lowered me into the depths of the pit,
    into the darkest regions of the abyss.
Your wrath lies heavy upon me;
    all your waves engulf me. Selah
You have caused my closest friends to shun me
    and made me hateful in their sight.
I am shut in with no means of escape,[i]
10     and my eyes grow dim[j] with my suffering.
[k]Every day I call out to you, O Lord,
    and spread out my hands to you.
11 Do you perform wonders[l] for the dead?
    Do the shades rise up and give you praise? Selah
12 Is your kindness[m] celebrated in the grave,
    or your faithfulness in the tomb?
13 Are your wonders known in the region of darkness,
    or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?[n]
14 [o]But for my part, I cry out to you, O Lord;
    in the morning my prayer rises before you.
15 Why do you cast me away, O Lord?[p]
    Why do you hide your face from me?
16 Since infancy I have been wretched and close to death;
    I have borne your terrors
    and have now reached the point of exhaustion.
17 Your wrath has weighed down upon me;
    your terrors have destroyed me.
18 All day long they surround me like a flood;
    they encircle me completely.
19 You have caused my friends and neighbors to shun me;
    my sole companion now is darkness.[q]

Psalm 27

Psalm 27[a]

Trust in God, Our Light and Salvation

Of David.

The Lord is my light[b] and my salvation;
    whom should I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
    of whom should I be afraid?
When evildoers close in on me
    to devour my flesh,[c]
it is they, my adversaries and enemies,
    who stumble and fall.
Even if an army encamps against me,
    my heart[d] will not succumb to fear;
even if war breaks out against me,
    I will not have my trust shaken.
There is only one thing I ask of the Lord,
    just one thing I seek:
to dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
so that I may enjoy the beauty of the Lord[e]
    and gaze on his temple.
For he will hide me in his shelter
    in times of trouble.
He will conceal me under the cover of his tent[f]
    and place me high upon a rock.
Even now my head is raised high
    above my enemies who surround me.
In his tent I will offer sacrifices[g] with joyous shouts;
    I will sing and chant praise to the Lord.
Lord, hear my voice when I cry out;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart[h] says of you,
    “Seek his face.”
It is your face, O Lord, that I seek;
    do not hide your face[i] from me.
Do not turn away your servant in anger,
    you who have been my help.
Do not reject or forsake me,
    O God, my Savior.
10 Even if my father and mother abandon me,
    the Lord will gather me up.[j]
11 Teach me your way,[k]Lord,
    and lead me along a level path
    because of my enemies.
12 Do not abandon me to the will of my adversaries,
    for lying witnesses have risen against me,
    breathing forth violence in their malice.
13 I am confident that I will behold the goodness of the Lord[l]
    in the land of the living.
14 Place your hope in the Lord:
    be strong and courageous in your heart,
    and place your hope in the Lord.

Lamentations 3:37-58

37 Who has only to command and it is done
    if the Lord has not given his approval?
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
    that evil and good proceed?
39 Why then should any people complain
    about being punished for their sins?
40 Let us examine and test our ways
    and return to the Lord.
41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands
    to God in heaven.
42 We have sinned and rebelled,
    and you have not forgiven us.
43 You have veiled yourself in anger and pursued us,
    slaying us without pity.
44 You have wrapped yourself in a cloud
    that no prayer can pierce.
45 You have reduced us to filth
    and rubbish among the nations.
46 All of our enemies have opened their mouths
    in a chorus of jeers against us.
47 Terror and pitfall, devastation and ruin,
    have been our lot.
48 My eyes flow with a torrent of tears
    because of the destruction of my people.
49 My eyes will flow with unceasing tears,
    and there will be no respite
50 until the Lord from heaven
    looks down and sees.
51 My eyes are swollen with grief
    at the fate of all the daughters of my city.
52 Those who were my enemies without justification
    have hunted me down like a bird.
53 They thrust me alive into a pit
    and hurled down stones at me.
54 The waters rose above my head,
    and I said, “I am lost.”
55 I called upon your name, O Lord,
    from the depths of the pit.
56 You heard me plead,
    “Do not close your ear to my cry for help!”
57 You came near when I called out to you,
    and you said, “Do not fear.”
58 Lord, you have taken up my cause,
    and you have redeemed my life.

Hebrews 4

Chapter 4

The Sabbath Rest of God’s People.[a] Therefore, since the promise of entering into his rest endures, we must take care that none of you be judged to have fallen short. For we too have received the good news just as they did, but the message they heard was of no benefit to them because those who listened did not combine it with faith. For we who have faith enter into that rest, just as God has said:

“Therefore, I swore in my anger,
    ‘They will never enter into my rest.’ ”

Yet God’s work had been finished at the beginning of the world. For somewhere he says in reference to the seventh day, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” And in this passage it says, “They will never enter into my rest.”

Seeing, therefore, that some will enter into that rest, and since those who first had received the good news failed to enter because of their refusal to believe, God once more set a day—“today”—when long afterward he spoke through David, as already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    harden not your hearts.”

Now if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken afterward of another day. Therefore, a Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God, 10 since those who enter into God’s rest also cease from their own labors as God did from his. 11 Let us then make every effort to enter into that rest, so that no one may fall by following that example of refusing to believe.

12 The Word of God Is Living.[b] Indeed, the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword, it pierces to the point where it divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and the intentions of the heart. 13 Nothing in creation is hidden from his sight. Everything is uncovered and exposed to the eyes of the one to whom we must all render an account.

14 A Compassionate High Priest.[c] Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our profession of faith. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tested in every respect as we are, but without sinning. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace when we are in need of help.

Romans 8:1-11

The Spirit of God Dwells in Christians[a]

Chapter 8

There Is No Longer Any Condemnation. Hence, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. That which the Law, weakened by the flesh, was unable to do, God has done. By sending his own Son in the likeness of our sinful nature as a sin offering, he condemned sin in the flesh so that the righteous requirements of the Law[b] might be fulfilled in us who live not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Animated by the Spirit and Rendered Children of God.[c] Those who live according to the flesh fix their attention on the things of the flesh, while those who live according to the Spirit set their thoughts on spiritual things. The desires of the flesh result in death, but the desires of the Spirit result in life and peace. Indeed, the desires of the flesh will be hostile to God, for they do not submit to the Law of God, nor could they do so. Those who live according to the flesh can never be pleasing to God.

You, however, do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not possess the Spirit of Christ cannot belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though the body is dead as a result of sin, the Spirit is alive in you because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then the one who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwells in you.[d]
