Psalm 37[a]

The Fate of Sinners and the Reward of the Just

Do not be provoked by evildoers;
    do not envy those who do wrong.(A)
Like grass they wither quickly;
    like green plants they wilt away.(B)

Beth

Trust in the Lord and do good
    that you may dwell in the land[b] and live secure.(C)
Find your delight in the Lord
    who will give you your heart’s desire.(D)

Gimel

Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him and he will act(E)
And make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
    your justice like noonday.(F)

Daleth

Be still before the Lord;
    wait for him.
Do not be provoked by the prosperous,
    nor by malicious schemers.

He

Refrain from anger; abandon wrath;
    do not be provoked; it brings only harm.
Those who do evil will be cut off,
    but those who wait for the Lord will inherit the earth.(G)

Waw

10 Wait a little, and the wicked will be no more;
    look for them and they will not be there.
11 But the poor will inherit the earth,(H)
    will delight in great prosperity.

Zayin

12 The wicked plot against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth at them;
13 But my Lord laughs at them,(I)
    because he sees that their day is coming.

14 The wicked unsheath their swords;
    they string their bows
To fell the poor and oppressed,
    to slaughter those whose way is upright.(J)
15 Their swords will pierce their own hearts;
    their bows will be broken.

16 Better the meagerness of the righteous one
    than the plenty of the wicked.(K)
17 The arms of the wicked will be broken,
    while the Lord will sustain the righteous.

18 The Lord knows the days of the blameless;
    their heritage lasts forever.
19 They will not be ashamed when times are bad;
    in days of famine they will be satisfied.

20 The wicked perish,
    enemies of the Lord;
They shall be consumed like fattened lambs;
    like smoke they disappear.(L)

21 The wicked one borrows but does not repay;
    the righteous one is generous and gives.
22 For those blessed by the Lord will inherit the earth,
    but those accursed will be cut off.

23 The valiant one whose steps are guided by the Lord,
    who will delight in his way,(M)
24 May stumble, but he will never fall,
    for the Lord holds his hand.

25 Neither in my youth, nor now in old age
    have I seen the righteous one abandoned(N)
    or his offspring begging for bread.
26 All day long he is gracious and lends,
    and his offspring become a blessing.

27 Turn from evil and do good,
    that you may be settled forever.(O)
28 For the Lord loves justice
    and does not abandon the faithful.

When the unjust are destroyed,
    and the offspring of the wicked cut off,
29 The righteous will inherit the earth
    and dwell in it forever.(P)

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom;(Q)
    his tongue speaks what is right.
31 God’s teaching is in his heart;(R)
    his steps do not falter.

32 The wicked spies on the righteous
    and seeks to kill him.
33 But the Lord does not abandon him in his power,
    nor let him be condemned when tried.

34 Wait eagerly for the Lord,
    and keep his way;(S)
He will raise you up to inherit the earth;
    you will see when the wicked are cut off.

35 I have seen a ruthless scoundrel,
    spreading out like a green cedar.(T)
36 When I passed by again, he was gone;
    though I searched, he could not be found.

Shin

37 Observe the person of integrity and mark the upright;
    Because there is a future for a man of peace.(U)
38 Sinners will be destroyed together;
    the future of the wicked will be cut off.

Taw

39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord,
    their refuge in a time of distress.(V)
40 The Lord helps and rescues them,
    rescues and saves them from the wicked,
    because they take refuge in him.

Genesis 11:1-9

Chapter 11

Tower of Babel.[a] The whole world had the same language and the same words. When they were migrating from the east, they came to a valley in the land of Shinar[b] and settled there. They said to one another, “Come, let us mold bricks and harden them with fire.” They used bricks for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky,[c] and so make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth.”

The Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the people had built. Then the Lord said: If now, while they are one people and all have the same language, they have started to do this, nothing they presume to do will be out of their reach. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that no one will understand the speech of another. So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel,[d] because there the Lord confused the speech of all the world. From there the Lord scattered them over all the earth.

Hebrews 6:13-20

God’s Promise Immutable. 13 [a](A)When God made the promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, “he swore by himself,” 14 and said, “I will indeed bless you and multiply” you.(B) 15 And so, after patient waiting,(C) he obtained the promise.[b] 16 Human beings swear by someone greater than themselves; for them an oath serves as a guarantee and puts an end to all argument. 17 So when God wanted to give the heirs of his promise an even clearer demonstration of the immutability of his purpose, he intervened with an oath,(D) 18 so that by two immutable things,[c] in which it was impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to hold fast to the hope that lies before us.(E) 19 This we have as an anchor of the soul,(F) sure and firm, which reaches into the interior behind the veil,[d] 20 where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner, becoming high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.(G)

John 4:1-15

Chapter 4

[a]Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, just his disciples),[b] he left Judea and returned to Galilee.

The Samaritan Woman. He had to[c] pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar,[d] near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(A) Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon.

A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. [e]The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?”(B) (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.) 10 [f]Jesus answered and said to her,(C) “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 [The woman] said to him, “Sir,[g] you do not even have a bucket and the well is deep; where then can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?”(D) 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”(E) 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”
