Book of Common Prayer
61 1 Whether that he were in danger of the Ammonites, or being pursued of Absalom, here he crieth to be heard and delivered, 7 And confirmed in his kingdom. 8 He promiseth perpetual praises.
To him that excelleth on Neginoth. A Psalm of David.
1 Hear my cry, O God: give ear unto my prayer.
2 From [a]the ends of the earth will I cry unto thee: when mine heart is oppressed, bring me upon the rock that is [b]higher than I.
3 For thou hast been my hope, and a strong tower against the enemy.
4 I will dwell in thy Tabernacle forever, and my trust shall be under the covering of thy wings. Selah.
5 For thou, O God, [c]hast heard my desires; thou hast given an heritage unto those that fear thy Name.
6 Thou shalt give the King a [d]long life; his years shall be as many ages.
7 He shall dwell before God forever; prepare [e]mercy and faithfulness, that they may preserve him.
8 So will I always sing praise unto thy Name, in performing daily my vows.
62 This Psalm partly containeth meditation, whereby David encourageth himself to trust in God against the assaults of temptations. And because our minds are easily drawn from God by the allurements of the world, he sharply reproveth this vanity, to the intent he might cleave fast to the Lord.
To the excellent Musician (A)Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
1 Yet [f]my soul keepeth silence unto God; of him cometh my salvation.
2 [g]Yet he is my strength and my salvation, and my defense; therefore I shall not much be moved.
3 How long will ye imagine mischief against a [h]man? ye shall be all slain; ye shall be as a bowed wall, or as a [i]wall shaken.
4 Yet they consult to cast him down from his dignity; their delight is in lies: they bless with their mouths, but curse with their hearts. Selah.
5 [j]Yet my soul, keep thou silence unto God: for mine hope is in him.
6 Yet is he my strength and my salvation, and my defense: therefore I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my [k]glory, the rock of my strength; in God is my trust.
8 Trust in him always, ye people; [l]pour out your hearts before him, for God is our hope. Selah.
9 Yet the children of men are vanity, the chief men are liars: to lay them upon a balance they are altogether lighter than vanity.
10 Trust not in oppression nor in robbery: [m]be not vain: if riches increase, set not your heart thereon.
11 God spake [n]once or twice, I have heard it, that power belongeth unto God,
12 And to thee, O Lord, mercy: for thou [o]rewardest everyone according to his work.
112 1 He praiseth the felicity of them that fear God, 10 and condemneth the cursed state of the contemners of God.
Praise ye the Lord.
1 Blessed is the man that [a]feareth the Lord, and delighteth greatly in his commandments.
2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the righteous shall be blessed.
3 [b]Riches and treasures shall be in his house, and his righteousness endureth forever.
4 Unto the [c]righteous ariseth light in darkness: he is merciful and full of compassion and righteous.
5 A good man is merciful, and [d]lendeth, and will measure his affairs by judgment.
6 Surely he shall never be moved: but the righteous shall be had in everlasting remembrance.
7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings: for his heart is fixed, and believeth in the Lord.
8 His heart is established: therefore he will not fear, until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9 He hath [e]distributed and given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth forever: his [f]horn shall be exalted with glory.
10 The wicked shall see it, and be angry: he shall gnash with his teeth, and [g]consume away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
115 1 A prayer of the faithful oppressed by idolatrous tyrants, against whom they desire that God would succor them, 9 trusting most constantly that God will preserve them in this their need, seeing, that he hath adopted and received them into his favor. 13 Promising finally that they will not be unmindful of so great a benefit if it would please God to hear their prayer, and deliver them by his omnipotent power.
1 Not [a]unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy Name give the glory for thy loving mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.
2 Wherefore shall the heathen say, [b]Where is now their God?
3 But our God is in heaven: he doeth whatsoever he [c]will.
4 Their idols are [d]silver and gold, even the work of men’s hands.
5 They have a mouth, and speak not: they have eyes, and see not.
6 They have ears, and hear not: they have noses and smell not.
7 They have [e]hands, and touch not: they have feet, and walk not: neither make they a sound with their throat.
8 They that make them are [f]like unto them: so are all that trust in them.
9 O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: for he is their help, and their shield.
10 [g]O house of Aaron trust ye in the Lord, for he is their help, and their shield.
11 Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: for he is their helper, and their shield.
12 The Lord hath been mindful of us, he will bless, he [h]will bless the house of Israel, he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless them that fear the Lord, both small and great.
14 The Lord will increase his graces toward you, even toward you, and toward your children.
15 Ye are blessed of the Lord, which [i]made the heaven and the earth.
16 The [j]heavens, even the heavens are the Lord’s: but he hath given the earth to the sons of men.
17 The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that [k]go down into the place of silence.
18 But we will praise the Lord from henceforth and forever. Praise ye the Lord.
14 Rejoice, O daughter Zion: be ye joyful, O Israel: be glad and rejoice with all thine heart, O daughter Jerusalem.
15 The Lord hath taken away thy [a]judgments: he hath cast out thine [b]enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord is in the midst of [c]thee: thou shalt see no more evil.
16 In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not, O Zion, let not thine hands be faint.
17 The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty: he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy: he will quiet himself in [d]his love: he will rejoice over thee with joy.
18 After a certain time will I gather the afflicted that were of thee, and them that bare the reproach for [e]it.
19 Behold, at that time I will bruise all that afflict thee, and I will [f]save her that halteth, and gather her that was cast out, and I will get them praise and fame in all the [g]lands of their shame.
20 At that time will I bring you again, and then will I gather you: for I will give you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.
The Epistle of Paul to Titus
1 6 He showeth what kind of men ought to be chosen Ministers: 10 how vain babblers’ mouths should be stopped: 12 and through this occasion he toucheth the nature of the Cretans, 14 and the Jews, who put boldness in outward things.
1 Paul [a]a [b]servant of God, and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s [c]elect, [d]and the acknowledging of the truth, which is according unto godliness.
2 Unto the [e]hope of eternal life, which God that cannot lie, hath [f]promised before the (A)[g]world began:
3 [h]But hath made his word manifest in due time through the preaching, which is (B)committed unto me according to the commandment of God our [i]Savior:
4 [j]To Titus my natural son according to the common faith, [k]Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.
5 [l]For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest continue to redress the things that remain, and shouldest ordain Elders in every city as I ap-pointed thee.
6 (C)If any be unreproveable, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, which are not slandered of riot, neither are [m]disobedient.
7 [n]For a Bishop must be unreproveable, as God’s [o]steward, not [p]froward, not angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre,
8 But harberous, one that loveth goodness, [q]wise, righteous, holy, temperate,
9 [r]Holding fast that faithful word according to doctrine, [s]that he also may be able to exhort with wholesome doctrine, and convince them that say against it.
10 [t]For there are many disobedient and vain talkers and deceivers of minds, chiefly they of the [u]Circumcision,
11 Whose mouths must be stopped, which subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
12 [v]One of themselves, even one of their own Prophets said, The Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13 This witness is true: wherefore convince them [w]sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.
14 And not taking heed to (D)Jewish fables and commandments of men, that turn away from the truth.
15 [x]Unto the pure (E)are all things pure, but unto them that are defiled, and unbelieving, is nothing pure, but even their [y]minds and consciences are defiled.
16 They profess that they know God, but by works they deny him, and are abominable and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ, According to Luke
1 Luke: Preface 5 Zacharias and Elizabeth. 15 What an one John should be. 20 Zacharias stricken dumb, for his incredulity. 26 The Angel saluteth Mary, and foretelleth Christ’s nativity. 39 Mary visited Elizabeth. 46 Mary’s song. 68 The song of Zacharias, showing that the promised Christ is come. 76 The office of John.
1 Forasmuch as [a]many have [b]taken in hand to set forth the story of those things, whereof we are fully persuaded,
2 [c]As they have delivered them unto us, which from the beginning saw them themselves, and were ministers of the word,
3 It seemed good also to me ([d]most noble Theophilus) as soon as I had searched out perfectly all things [e]from the beginning, to write unto thee thereof from point to point,
4 That thou mightest [f]acknowledge the certainty of those things whereof thou hast been instructed.
5 In [g]the [h]time of [i]Herod King of Judea, there was a certain Priest named Zacharias, of the (A)[j]course of Abijah: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6 Both were [k]just before God, and [l]walked in all the [m]commandments and ordinances of the Lord, [n]without reproof.
7 And they had no child, because that Elizabeth was barren: and both were well stricken in age.
8 And it came to pass, as he executed the Priest’s office before God, as his course came in order,
9 (B)According to the custom of the Priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense, when he went into the [o]Temple of the Lord.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were without in prayer, (C)while the incense was burning.
11 Then appeared unto him an Angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the Altar of incense.
12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the Angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the [p]sight of the Lord, and shall neither drink wine, nor [q]strong drink: and he shall be filled with the holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
16 (D)And many of the children of Israel shall he [r]turn to their Lord God.
17 (E)For he shall go [s]before him [t]in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the [u]hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the [v]wisdom of the just men, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 Then Zacharias said unto the Angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is of a great age.
19 And the Angel answered, and said unto him, I am Gabriel [w]that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee these good tidings.
20 And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not be able to speak, until the day that these things be done, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 Now the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he tarried so long in the Temple.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: then they perceived that he had seen a vision in the Temple: for he made signs unto them, and remained dumb.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his office were fulfilled, that he departed to his own house.
24 And after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me, in the days wherein he looked on me, to take from me my rebuke among men.
