⁹ I, John, your brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience which is in Jesus Christ, was in the isle of Patmos for the word of God, and for the witnessing of Jesus Christ. ¹⁰ I was in the Spirit on a Sunday, and heard behind me a great voice, as if of a trumpet, ¹¹ saying, I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. That which you see, write in a book, and send it to the seven congregations that are in Asia: to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamos, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.

¹² And I turned back to see the voice that spoke to me. And when I was turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks, ¹³ and in the midst of the candlesticks one like the Son of man, clothed with a linen garment down to the ground, and girt about the breast with a golden girdle. ¹⁴ His head and his hair were white like white wool, and like snow. And his eyes were as a flame of fire, ¹⁵ and his feet like brass, as though glowing in a furnace, and his voice like the sound of many waters. ¹⁶ And he had in his right hand seven stars. And out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword. And his face shone, even as the sun in its strength.

³⁴ When the Pharisees heard how he had put the Sadducees to silence, they drew together. ³⁵ One of them, who was a doctor of the law, asked him a question, testing him and saying, ³⁶ Teacher, which is the chief commandment in the law? ³⁷ Jesus said to him, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind; ³⁸ this is the first and the chief commandment. ³⁹ And there is another like this: Love your neighbour as yourself. ⁴⁰ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

⁴¹ While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, ⁴² saying, What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he? They said to him, The son of David. ⁴³ He said to them, How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying, ⁴⁴ The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool? ⁴⁵ If David calls him Lord, how is he then his son?

⁴⁶ And no one could answer him a word. Neither did anyone from that day forth dare ask him any more questions.
