because I obey your precepts.(F)
101 I have kept my feet from every evil path(G)
to follow your word.
102 I have not turned from your judgments,(H)

103 How sweet your word is(I) to my taste—
sweeter than honey in my mouth.
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;(J)
therefore I hate every false way.(K)

Psalm 81-82

Psalm 81

A Call to Obedience

For the choir director: on the Gittith. Of Asaph.(A)

Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.(B)
Lift up a song—play the tambourine,
the melodious lyre, and the harp.(C)
Blow the ram’s horn on the day of our feasts[a]
during the new moon(D)
and during the full moon.
For this is a statute for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.(E)
He set it up as a decree for Joseph
when he went throughout[b] the land of Egypt.(F)
I heard an unfamiliar language:
“I relieved his shoulder from the burden;
his hands were freed from carrying the basket.(G)
You called out in distress, and I rescued you;
I answered you from the thundercloud.(H)
I tested you at the Waters of Meribah.(I)Selah
Listen, my people, and I will admonish you.
Israel, if you would only listen to me!(J)
There must not be a strange god among you;
you must not bow down to a foreign god.(K)
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt.(L)
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.(M)

11 “But my people did not listen to my voice;
Israel did not obey me.(N)
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
to follow their own plans.(O)
13 If only my people would listen to me
and Israel would follow my ways,(P)
14 I would quickly subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes.”(Q)
15 Those who hate the Lord
would cower to him;(R)
their doom would last forever.(S)
16 But he would feed Israel[c] with the best wheat.
“I would satisfy you with honey from the rock.”(T)

Psalm 82

A Plea for Righteous Judgment

A psalm of Asaph.(U)

God stands in the divine assembly;
he pronounces judgment among the gods:[d](V)
“How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?(W)Selah
Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless;
uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.(X)
Rescue the poor and needy;
save them from the power of the wicked.”(Y)

They do not know or understand;
they wander in darkness.(Z)
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.(AA)

I said, “You are gods;(AB)
you are all sons of the Most High.(AC)
However, you will die like humans
and fall like any other ruler.”(AD)

Rise up, God, judge the earth,
for all the nations belong to you.(AE)

2 Samuel 9

David’s Kindness to Mephibosheth

David asked, “Is there anyone remaining from the family of Saul I can show kindness(A) to for Jonathan’s sake?” (B) There was a servant of Saul’s family named Ziba.(C) They summoned him to David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?”

“I am your servant,” he replied.

So the king asked, “Is there anyone left of Saul’s family that I can show the kindness of God to?”

Ziba said to the king, “There is still Jonathan’s son who was injured in both feet.”(D)

The king asked him, “Where is he?”

Ziba answered the king, “You’ll find him in Lo-debar at the house of Machir son of Ammiel.” So King David had him brought from the house of Machir son of Ammiel in Lo-debar.

Mephibosheth son of Jonathan son of Saul came to David, fell facedown, and paid homage. David said, “Mephibosheth!”

“I am your servant,” he replied.

“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “since I intend to show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Saul’s fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.”(E)

Mephibosheth paid homage and said, “What is your servant that you take an interest in a dead dog(F) like me?”

Then the king summoned Saul’s attendant Ziba and said to him, “I have given to your master’s grandson all that belonged to Saul and his family. 10 You, your sons, and your servants are to work the ground for him, and you are to bring in the crops so your master’s grandson will have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

11 Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do all my lord the king commands.”

So Mephibosheth ate at David’s[a] table just like one of the king’s sons. 12 Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica.(G) All those living in Ziba’s house were Mephibosheth’s servants. 13 However, Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem because he always ate at the king’s table. His feet had been injured.

Acts 19:1-10

Twelve Disciples of John the Baptist

19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples(A) and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (B)

“No,” they told him, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”(C)

“Into what then were you baptized?” he asked them.

“Into John’s baptism,” they replied.(D)

Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance,(E) telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”(F)

When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on(G) them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues[a] and to prophesy.(H) Now there were about twelve men in all.

In the Lecture Hall of Tyrannus

Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly over a period of three months, arguing and persuading them about the kingdom of God.(I) But when some became hardened and would not believe, slandering the Way in front of the crowd, he withdrew from them, taking the disciples, and conducted discussions every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.(J) 10 This went on for two years, so that all the residents of Asia, both Jews and Greeks,(K) heard the word of the Lord.(L)

Mark 8:34-9:1

Take Up Your Cross

34 Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself,(A) take up his cross,(B) and follow me.(C) 35 For whoever wants to save(D) his life will lose it,(E) but whoever loses(F) his life(G) because of me(H) and the gospel(I) will save it.(J) 36 For what does it benefit(K) someone to gain(L) the whole world(M) and yet lose(N) his life?(O) 37 What can anyone give in exchange for his life?(P) 38 For whoever is ashamed(Q) of me and my words(R) in this adulterous and sinful(S) generation,(T) the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory(U) of his Father(V) with the holy(W) angels.”(X)

Then he said to them, “Truly I tell you,(Y) there are some standing here who will not taste death(Z) until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”(AA)
