I Have Calmed and Quieted My Soul

A Song of (A)Ascents. Of David.

131 O Lord, my heart is not (B)lifted up;
    my eyes are not (C)raised too high;
I do not (D)occupy myself with things
    too great and (E)too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
    like a weaned (F)child with its mother;
    like a weaned child is my soul within me.

(G)O Israel, hope in the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore.

The Lord Has Chosen Zion

A Song of (H)Ascents.

132 Remember, O Lord, in David's favor,
    all (I)the hardships he endured,
how he swore to the Lord
    and (J)vowed to (K)the Mighty One of Jacob,
“I will not enter my house
    or get into my bed,
I will not (L)give sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
until I (M)find a place for the Lord,
    a dwelling place for (N)the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Behold, we heard of it in (O)Ephrathah;
    we found it in (P)the fields of Jaar.
“Let us go to his dwelling place;
    let us (Q)worship at his (R)footstool!”

(S)Arise, O Lord, and go to your (T)resting place,
    you and the ark of your (U)might.
Let your (V)priests be (W)clothed with righteousness,
    and let your (X)saints shout for joy.
10 For the sake of your servant David,
    (Y)do not turn away the face of (Z)your anointed one.

11 (AA)The Lord swore to David a sure oath
    (AB)from which he will not turn back:
(AC)“One of the sons of your body[a]
    I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
    and my testimonies that I shall teach them,
their sons also forever
    shall (AD)sit on your throne.”

13 For the Lord has (AE)chosen Zion;
    he has (AF)desired it for his dwelling place:
14 “This is my (AG)resting place forever;
    here I will (AH)dwell, for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly (AI)bless her provisions;
    I will (AJ)satisfy her poor with bread.
16 Her (AK)priests I will clothe with salvation,
    and her (AL)saints will shout for joy.
17 There I will make (AM)a horn to sprout for David;
    I have prepared (AN)a lamp for (AO)my anointed.
18 His enemies I will (AP)clothe with shame,
    but on him his crown will shine.”

When Brothers Dwell in Unity

A Song of (AQ)Ascents. Of David.

133 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when (AR)brothers dwell in unity![b]
It is like the precious (AS)oil on (AT)the head,
    running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
    running down on (AU)the collar of his robes!
It is like (AV)the dew of (AW)Hermon,
    which falls on (AX)the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord (AY)has commanded the blessing,
    life forevermore.

Come, Bless the Lord

A Song of (AZ)Ascents.

134 Come, bless the Lord, all you (BA)servants of the Lord,
    who (BB)stand (BC)by night in the house of the Lord!
(BD)Lift up your hands to (BE)the holy place
    and bless the Lord!

May the Lord (BF)bless you (BG)from Zion,
    he who (BH)made heaven and earth!

Your Name, O Lord, Endures Forever

135 (BI)Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord,
    give praise, O (BJ)servants of the Lord,
who (BK)stand in the house of the Lord,
    in (BL)the courts of the house of our God!
Praise the Lord, for (BM)the Lord is good;
    sing to his name, (BN)for it is pleasant![c]
For the Lord has (BO)chosen Jacob for himself,
    Israel as his (BP)own possession.

For I know that (BQ)the Lord is great,
    and that our Lord is above all gods.
(BR)Whatever the Lord pleases, he does,
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all deeps.
(BS)He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth,
    who (BT)makes lightnings for the rain
    and brings forth the wind from his (BU)storehouses.

He it was who (BV)struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    both of man and of beast;
who in your midst, O Egypt,
    sent (BW)signs and wonders
    against Pharaoh and all his servants;
10 (BX)who struck down many nations
    and killed mighty kings,
11 (BY)Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    and (BZ)Og, king of Bashan,
    and (CA)all the kingdoms of Canaan,
12 and (CB)gave their land as a heritage,
    a heritage to his people Israel.

13 (CC)Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
    (CD)your renown,[d] O Lord, throughout all ages.
14 (CE)For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and (CF)have compassion on his servants.

15 (CG)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths, but do not speak;
    they have eyes, but do not see;
17 they have ears, but do not hear,
    nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them become like them,
    so do all who trust in them.

19 (CH)O house of Israel, bless the Lord!
    O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!
20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord!
    You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord (CI)from Zion,
    he who (CJ)dwells in Jerusalem!
(CK)Praise the Lord!

Numbers 23:11-26

11 And Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? (A)I took you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have done nothing but bless them.” 12 And he answered and said, (B)“Must I not take care to speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”

Balaam's Second Oracle

13 And Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place, from which you may see them. You shall see only a fraction of them and shall not see them all. Then curse them for me from there.” 14 And he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, (C)and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 15 Balaam said to Balak, (D)“Stand here beside your burnt offering, while I meet the Lord over there.” 16 And the Lord met Balaam and (E)put a word in his mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak.” 17 And he came to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the Lord spoken?” 18 And Balaam took up his discourse and said,

“Rise, Balak, and hear;
    give ear to me, O son of Zippor:
19 (F)God is not man, that he should lie,
    or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
    Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
20 Behold, I received a command to bless:
    (G)he has blessed, and (H)I cannot revoke it.
21 (I)He has not beheld misfortune in Jacob,
    nor has he seen trouble in Israel.
The Lord their God is with them,
    and the shout of a king is among them.
22 (J)God brings them out of Egypt
    and is for them like (K)the horns of the wild ox.
23 For there is no enchantment against Jacob,
    no (L)divination against Israel;
now it shall be said of Jacob and Israel,
    (M)‘What has God wrought!’
24 Behold, a people! (N)As a lioness it rises up
    and as a lion it lifts itself;
(O)it does not lie down until it has devoured the prey
    and drunk the blood of the slain.”

25 And Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all, and do not bless them at all.” 26 But Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you, (P)‘All that the Lord says, that I must do’?”

Romans 8:1-11

Life in the Spirit

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.[a] For the law of (A)the Spirit of life (B)has set you[b] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For (C)God has done what the law, (D)weakened by the flesh, (E)could not do. (F)By sending his own Son (G)in the likeness of sinful flesh and (H)for sin,[c] he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that (I)the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, (J)who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For (K)those who live according to the flesh set their minds on (L)the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on (M)the things of the Spirit. For to set (N)the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is (O)hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; (P)indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact (Q)the Spirit of God dwells in you. (R)Anyone who does not have (S)the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of (T)him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus[d] from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies (U)through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Matthew 22:1-14

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

22 And again Jesus (A)spoke to them in parables, saying, (B)“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave (C)a wedding feast for his son, and (D)sent his servants[a] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. (E)Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my (F)dinner, (G)my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ But (H)they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, (I)treated them shamefully, and (J)killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and (K)destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not (L)worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And those servants went out into the roads and (M)gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there (N)a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, (O)‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and (P)cast him into the outer darkness. In that place (Q)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are (R)called, but few are (S)chosen.”
