145 I call to you with all my heart.
    Answer me, Lord, and I will ·keep [protect] your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements].
146 I call to you.
    ·Save me [Give me victory] so I can ·obey [keep; guard] your ·rules [decrees; testimonies].
147 I ·wake up early in the morning [get up before dawn] and cry out.
    I hope in your word.
148 ·I stay awake all night [L My eyes awake in the watches of the night]
    so I can ·think about [meditate on] your promises.
149 ·Listen to me [L Hear my voice] because of your ·love [loyalty];
    Lord, ·give me [spare my] life by your ·laws [judgments].
150 Those who ·love evil [L pursue/persecute me with an evil plan] are near,
    but they are far from your ·teachings [instructions; laws].
151 But, Lord, you are also near,
    and all your commands are ·true [faithful].
152 Long ago I learned from your ·rules [decrees; testimonies]

153 See my ·suffering [affliction] and rescue me,

161 Leaders ·attack [pursue] me for no reason,
    but ·I fear your law in my heart [L my heart fears your words].

Psalm 128-130

The Happy Home

128 ·Happy [Blessed] are those who ·respect [fear] the Lord [Prov. 1:7] and ·obey him [L walk in his ways].
You will ·enjoy what you work for [L eat the labor of your hands],
    and you will be ·blessed [happy] with ·good things [prosperity].
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine [C produce many children] in your house [Prov. 31:10–31].
    Your children will be like olive branches [C bringing much good] around your table [Mic. 4:4; Zech. 3:10].
This is how the man who ·respects [fears] the Lord [Prov. 1:7]
    will be blessed.
May the Lord bless you from Mount Zion [C the location of the Temple];

May you see your grandchildren.

A Prayer Against the Enemies

129 ·They have treated me badly all my life [L Many are my foes from my youth].
    (Let Israel ·repeat this [L say].)
·They have treated me badly all my life [L Many are my foes from my youth],
    but they have not ·defeated [overcome; prevailed over] me.
·Like farmers plowing, they plowed over my back [L The plowers plowed my back],
    making ·long wounds [L their furrows long].
But the Lord does what is right;
    he has ·set me free from those [L cut the cords of] wicked people.

Let those who hate ·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple]
    be ·turned back in shame [L humiliated and turn back].
Let them be like the grass on the roof
    that dries up before it has grown.
There is not enough of it ·to [L for the harvester to] fill a hand
    or ·to make into a bundle [those who bind sheaves] to fill one’s arms.
Let those who pass by them not say,
    “May the Lord bless you.
We bless you by the ·power [L name] of the Lord.”

A Prayer for Mercy

130 Lord, ·I am in great trouble [L from the depths],
    so I ·call out [pray] to you.
Lord, hear my voice;
    ·listen to my prayer for help [L let your ear pay attention to the sound of my supplication].
Lord, if you ·punished people for all their sins [L observed/watched/guarded against iniquity],
    ·no one would be left [L who could stand…?], Lord.
But you forgive ·us [L your people],
    so you are ·respected [feared; Prov. 1:7].

I ·wait [hope] for the Lord ·to help me [L my soul hopes],
    and I ·trust [hope in] his word.
I ·wait for the Lord to help me [hope for the Lord]
    more than night watchmen wait for the ·dawn [morning],
more than night watchmen wait for the ·dawn [morning].

People of Israel, put your hope in the Lord
    because he is ·loving [loyal]
    and ·able to save [L with him is abundant redemption].
He will ·save [redeem] Israel
    from all their ·sins [iniquities].

Numbers 22:41-23:12

41 The next morning Balak took Balaam to Bamoth Baal; from there he could see the edge of the ·Israelite camp [L people].

Balaam’s First Message

23 Balaam said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven ·male sheep [rams] for me.” Balak did what Balaam asked, and they offered a bull and a ·male sheep [ram] on each of the altars.

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your burnt offering [Lev. 1:1–17] and I will go. If the Lord comes to me, I will tell you whatever he shows me.” Then Balaam went to a ·higher place [or barren height].

God came to Balaam there, and Balaam said to him, “I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered a bull and a ·male sheep [ram] on each altar.”

The Lord ·told Balaam what he should say [L put a word in the mouth of Balaam]. Then the Lord said, “Go back to Balak and ·give him this message [L thus you will speak].”

So Balaam went back to Balak. Balak and all the leaders of Moab were still standing beside his burnt offering [Lev. 1:1–17] when Balaam gave them this ·message [or oracle; or poem]:

“Balak brought me here from Aram;
    the king of Moab brought me from the eastern mountains.
Balak said, ‘Come, put a curse on the people of Jacob for me.
    Come, call down evil on the people of Israel.’
But ·God has not cursed them,
    so I cannot curse them [L how can I curse what God has not cursed?].
·The Lord has not called down evil on them,
    so I cannot call down evil on them [L How can I call down evil on/denounce what the Lord has not called down evil/denouced?].
I see them from the top of the ·mountains [cliffs];
    I see them from the hills.
I see a people who live alone,
    who think they are different from other nations [Ex. 19:5–6].
10 No one can number the ·many people [L dust; Gen. 13:16; 28:14] of Jacob,
    and no one can count a ·fourth [or dust cloud] of Israel.
Let me die like ·good [virtuous; upright] people,
    and let me end up like them!”

11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you here to curse my enemies, but you have only blessed them!”

12 But Balaam answered, “·I must [L Must I not…?] say what the Lord ·tells me to say [L put in my mouth].”

Romans 7:13-25

13 Does this mean that something that is good ·brought [or became] death to me? No [Absolutely not; May it never be; v. 7]! Sin used something that is good to bring death to me. This happened so that ·I could see what sin is really like [L sin might be shown as sin]; the command was used to show that sin is ·very evil [exceedingly/terribly sinful].

The War Within Us

14 [L For] We know that the law is spiritual, but I am ·not spiritual [fleshly; carnal] ·since sin rules me as if I were its slave [L sold to sin; C as a slave]. 15 [L For] I do not understand the things I do. [L For] I do not do what I want to do, and I do the things I hate. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, that means I agree that the law is good [C Paul’s acknowledgement that his behavior is wrong confirms the law’s righteous standards]. 17 But [L now] I am not really the one who is doing these hated things; it is sin living in me that does them. 18 ·Yes [L For…], I know that nothing good lives in me—I mean nothing good lives in ·the part of me that is earthly and sinful [my sinful self; my sinful nature; T my flesh]. [L For] I want to do the things that are good, but I ·do not [or cannot] do them. 19 [L For] I do not do the good things I want to do, but I do the ·bad [evil] things I do not want to do. 20 So if I do things I do not want to do, then I am not the one doing them. It is sin living in me that does those things.

21 So I ·have learned this rule [or find this principle/law at work]: When I want to do good, evil is ·there with me [present within me; close at hand]. 22 [L For] In ·my mind [my inmost self; L the person within], I ·am happy with [delight in] God’s law. 23 But I see ·another law [a different standard; or another power] working in my ·body [or outward actions; L members; parts], which makes war against the ·law [standards] that my mind accepts. That other ·law [standard; or power] working in my ·body [or outward actions; L members; parts] is the law of sin, and it makes me its prisoner. 24 What a ·miserable [wretched] man I am! Who will ·save [free; rescue; deliver] me from this ·body that brings me death [body doomed to die; or burden of death]? 25 ·I thank God for saving me [L Thanks be to God!] through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So [L then] in my mind I am a slave to God’s law, but in my ·sinful self [sinful nature; T flesh] I am a slave to the ·law [principle; or power] of sin.

Matthew 21:33-46

The Story of the Evil Farmers(A)

33 “Listen to ·this story [another parable]: There was a ·man who owned [landowner who planted] a vineyard. He put a wall around it and dug a ·hole [vat; pit] for a winepress and built a tower [C to protect against thieves; see Is. 5:1–7 for the background to this parable]. Then he leased the land to some [C tenant] farmers and left for a trip [C the owner represents God, the farmers are Israel’s religious leaders]. 34 When it was time for the grapes to be picked, he sent his ·servants [slaves] to the farmers to get his share of the grapes. 35 But the farmers grabbed the ·servants [slaves], beat one, killed another, and then ·killed a third servant with stones [L stoned a third]. 36 So the man sent some other ·servants [slaves] to the farmers, even more than he sent the first time. But the farmers did the same thing to them that they had done before [C the servants represent the prophets God sent to Israel]. 37 ·So [L Finally; Last of all] the man sent his son to the farmers [C the son represents Jesus]. He said, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the farmers saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This son will inherit the vineyard. Let’s kill him, and we will get his inheritance!’ 39 Then the farmers grabbed the son, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 So what will the ·owner [lord] of the vineyard do to these farmers when he comes?”

41 ·The priests and leaders [L They] said, “He will ·surely kill those evil men [bring those wretches/evil men to a wretched/evil end]. Then he will lease the vineyard to some other farmers who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time [C referring to the sinners who were responding to Jesus’ call for repentance, and eventually to the Gentiles who would be saved].”

42 Jesus said to them, “·Surely you have read [L Haven’t you ever read…?] this in the Scriptures:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
    became the cornerstone [capstone; keystone; L head of the corner; C the meaning is uncertain, but clearly refers to the most important stone in the building; Jesus is the rejected stone].
The Lord did this,
    and it is ·wonderful [amazing; marvelous] ·to us [for us to see; L in our eyes; Ps. 118:22–23].’

43 “·So [For this reason; Therefore] I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to ·people [a nation] who ·do the things God wants in his kingdom [L will produce its fruit]. 44 The person who ·falls on [stumbles over] this stone will be ·broken [shattered], and on whomever that stone falls, that person will be crushed.”[a]

45 When the ·leading [T chief] priests and the Pharisees heard these ·stories [parables], they knew Jesus was talking about them. 46 They ·wanted [were seeking/trying] to arrest him, but they were afraid of the ·people [crowds], because the people believed that Jesus was a prophet.
