Psalm 97

The Lord is King

97 The Lord reigns!
    Let the earth rejoice!
        May many islands be glad!

Thick clouds are all around him;
    righteousness and justice are his throne’s foundation.
Fire goes out from his presence
    to consume his enemies on every side.
His lightning bolts light the world;
    the earth sees and shakes.
Mountains melt like wax in the Lord’s presence—
    In the presence of the Lord of all the earth.

The heavens declare his righteousness
    so that all the nations see his glory.

All who serve carved images—
    and those who praise idols—will be humiliated.
        Worship him, all you “gods”!

Zion hears and rejoices;
    the towns[a] of Judah rejoice
        on account of your justice, Lord.
For you, Lord, are the Most High above all the earth;
    you are exalted high above all divine beings.[b]

10 Hate evil, you who love the Lord!
    He guards the lives of those who love him,[c]
        delivering them from domination by[d] the wicked.
11 Light shines on the righteous;
    gladness on the morally upright.[e]
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones!
    Give thanks at the mention of his holiness!

Psalm 99

The Lord is Holy

99 The Lord reigns—
    let people tremble;
he is seated above the cherubim—
    let the earth quake.
The Lord is great in Zion
    and is exalted above all peoples.
Let them praise your great and awesome name.
    He is holy!

A mighty king who loves justice,
    you have established fairness.
You have exercised justice
    and righteousness over Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God;
    worship and bow down at his footstool;
        He is holy!

Moses and Aaron were among his priests;
    Samuel also was among those who invoked his name.
When they called on the Lord,
    he answered them.
In a pillar of cloud he spoke to them;
    they obeyed his decrees
        and the Law that he gave them.
Lord our God, you answered them;
    you were their God who forgave[a] them,
        but also avenged their evil deeds.

Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain,
    for the Lord our God is holy!

Psalm 115

The Impotence of Idols

115 Not to us, Lord, not to us,
    but to your name be given glory
    on account of your gracious love and faithfulness.
Why should the nations ask
    “Where now is their God?”
when our God is in the heavens
    and he does whatever he desires?

Their idols are silver and gold,
    crafted by human hands.
They have mouths, but cannot speak;
    they have eyes, but cannot see.
They have ears, but cannot hear;
    they have noses, but cannot smell.
They have hands, but cannot touch;
    feet, but cannot walk;
        they cannot even groan with their throats.
Those who craft them will become like them,
    as will all those who trust in them.

Israel, trust in the Lord!
    He is their helper and shield.
10 House of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
    He is their helper and shield.
11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
    He is their helper and shield.

12 The Lord remembers and blesses us.
    He will indeed bless the house of Israel;
        he will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless those who fear the Lord,
    both the important and the insignificant together.

14 May the Lord add to your numbers—
    to you and to your descendants.
15 May you be blessed by the Lord,
    who made the heavens and the earth.
16 The highest heavens[a] belong to the Lord,
    but he gave the earth to human beings.
17 Neither can the dead praise the Lord,
    nor those who go down into the silence of death.[b]
18 But we will bless the Lord
    from now to eternity.

Hallelujah!

Exodus 12:40-51

40 Now the time that the Israelis lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41 At the end of 430 years, to the very day, all the tribal divisions of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. 42 That was for the Lord a night of vigil[a] to bring them out of the land of Egypt. This same night belongs to the Lord, and is to be a vigil for all the Israelis from generation to generation.

Instructions for the Passover

43 The Lord told Moses and Aaron, “These are the regulations for the Passover: No foreigner is to eat it, 44 though any slave[b] purchased with money may eat it after you have circumcised him. 45 But no temporary resident or a hired servant is to eat it. 46 It is to be eaten in one house, and you are not to take any of the meat outside the house, nor are you to break any of its bones. 47 The whole congregation of Israel is to observe it. 48 If an alien who resides with you wants to observe the Passover to the Lord, every male in his household[c] must be circumcised, and then he may come near to observe it. He is to be like a native of the land, but no uncircumcised person is to eat it. 49 A single law exists for the native and the alien who resides among you.”

50 All the Israelis did this. They did exactly as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that very day, the Lord brought the Israelis out of the land of Egypt by their tribal divisions.

1 Corinthians 15:29-41

29 Otherwise, what will those people do who are being baptized because of those who have died? If the dead are not raised at all, why are they being baptized because of them? 30 And why in fact are we being endangered every hour? 31 I face death every day! That is as certain, brothers,[a] as it is that I am proud of you in the Messiah,[b] Jesus our Lord. 32 If I have fought with wild animals in Ephesus from merely human motives, what do I get out of it? If the dead are not raised,

“Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”[c]

33 Stop being deceived:

“Wicked friends lead to evil ends.”[d]

34 Come back to your senses as you should, and stop sinning! For some of you—I say this to your shame—don’t fully know God.

The Resurrection Body

35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? What kind of body will they have when they come back?” 36 You fool! The seed you plant does not come to life unless it dies, 37 and what you plant is not the form that it will be, but a bare kernel, whether it is wheat or something else. 38 But God gives the plant[e] the form he wants it to have, and to each kind of seed its own form. 39 Not all flesh is the same.[f] Humans have one kind of flesh,[g] animals in general have another,[h] birds have another,[i] and fish have still another. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the splendor of those in heaven is of one kind, and that of those on earth is of another. 41 One kind of splendor belongs to the sun, another[j] to the moon, and still another[k] to the stars. In fact, one star differs from another star in splendor.

Matthew 28:1-16

Jesus is Raised from the Dead(A)

28 After the Sabbaths,[a] around dawn on the first day of the week,[b] Mary Magdalene[c] and the other Mary went to take a look at the burial site.[d] Suddenly, there was a powerful earthquake, because an angel of the Lord had come down from heaven, approached the stone, rolled it away, and was sitting on top of it. His appearance was bright as lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. Trembling from fear, even the guards themselves became catatonic.[e]

Responding to the women, the angel said, “Stop being frightened! I know you’re looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here. He has been raised, just as he said. Come and see the place where he[f] was lying. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead. He is going ahead of you into Galilee, and you will see him there. Remember, I have told you!”

So they quickly left the tomb, terrified but also ecstatic, and ran to tell Jesus’[g] disciples. Suddenly, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” They went up to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then Jesus told them, “Stop being frightened! Go and tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.”

The Guards Report to the High Priests

11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and told the high priests everything that had happened. 12 So they met with the elders and agreed on a plan to give the soldiers a large[h] amount of money. 13 They said, “Say that Jesus’[i] disciples came at night and stole him while you were sleeping. 14 If this is reported to the governor, we’ll personally persuade him to keep you out of trouble.”[j] 15 So the soldiers[k] took the money, did as they were instructed, and this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

Jesus Commissions His Disciples(B)

16 The eleven disciples went into Galilee to the hillside to which Jesus had directed them.
