Psalm 66-67

Praise God for What He Has Done

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

66 Everything on earth, shout with joy to God!
Sing about his glory!
    Make his praise glorious!
Say to God, “Your works are amazing!
    Because your power is great,
    your enemies fall before you.
All the earth worships you
    and sings praises to you.
    They sing praises to your name.” Selah

Come and see what God has done,
    the amazing things he has done for people.
He turned the sea into dry land.
    The people crossed the river on foot.
    So let us rejoice because of what he did.
He rules forever with his power.
    He keeps his eye on the nations,
    so people should not turn against him. Selah

You people, praise our God;
    loudly sing his praise.
He protects our lives
    and does not let us be defeated.
10 God, you have tested us;
    you have purified us like silver.
11 You let us be trapped
    and put a heavy load on us.
12 You let our enemies walk on our heads.
    We went through fire and flood,
    but you brought us to a place with good things.

13 I will come to your Temple with burnt offerings.
    I will give you what I promised,
14 things I promised when I was in trouble.
15 I will bring you offerings of fat animals,
    and I will offer sheep, bulls, and goats. Selah

16 All of you who fear God, come and listen,
    and I will tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth
    and praised him with my tongue.
18 If I had known of any sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God has listened;
    he has heard my prayer.
20 Praise God,
    who did not ignore my prayer
    or hold back his love from me.

Everyone Should Praise God

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.

67 God, have mercy on us and bless us
    and show us your kindness Selah
so the world will learn your ways,
    and all nations will learn that you can save.

God, the people should praise you;
    all people should praise you.
The nations should be glad and sing
    because you judge people fairly.
    You guide all the nations on earth. Selah
God, the people should praise you;
    all people should praise you.

The land has given its crops.
    God, our God, blesses us.
God blesses us
    so people all over the earth will fear him.

Psalm 19

God’s Works and Word

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

19 The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the skies announce what his hands have made.
Day after day they tell the story;
    night after night they tell it again.
They have no speech or words;
    they have no voice to be heard.
But their message goes out through all the world;
    their words go everywhere on earth.
The sky is like a home for the sun.
The sun comes out like a bridegroom from his bedroom.
    It rejoices like an athlete eager to run a race.
The sun rises at one end of the sky
    and follows its path to the other end.
    Nothing hides from its heat.

The teachings of the Lord are perfect;
    they give new strength.
The rules of the Lord can be trusted;
    they make plain people wise.
The orders of the Lord are right;
    they make people happy.
The commands of the Lord are pure;
    they light up the way.
Respect for the Lord is good;
    it will last forever.
The judgments of the Lord are true;
    they are completely right.
10 They are worth more than gold,
    even the purest gold.
They are sweeter than honey,
    even the finest honey.
11 By them your servant is warned.
    Keeping them brings great reward.

12 People cannot see their own mistakes.
    Forgive me for my secret sins.
13 Keep me from the sins of pride;
    don’t let them rule me.
Then I can be pure
    and innocent of the greatest of sins.

14 I hope my words and thoughts please you.
    Lord, you are my Rock, the one who saves me.

Psalm 46

God Protects His People

For the director of music. By alamoth. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

46 God is our protection and our strength.
    He always helps in times of trouble.
So we will not be afraid even if the earth shakes,
    or the mountains fall into the sea,
even if the oceans roar and foam,
    or the mountains shake at the raging sea. Selah

There is a river that brings joy to the city of God,
    the holy place where God Most High lives.
God is in that city, and so it will not be shaken.
    God will help her at dawn.
Nations tremble and kingdoms shake.
    God shouts and the earth crumbles.

The Lord All-Powerful is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our defender. Selah

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the amazing things he has done on the earth.
He stops wars everywhere on the earth.
    He breaks all bows and spears
    and burns up the chariots with fire.
10 God says, “Be still and know that I am God.
    I will be praised in all the nations;
    I will be praised throughout the earth.”

11 The Lord All-Powerful is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our defender. Selah

Genesis 29:20-35

20 So Jacob worked for Laban seven years so he could marry Rachel. But they seemed like just a few days to him because he loved Rachel very much.

21 After seven years Jacob said to Laban, “Give me Rachel so that I may marry her. The time I promised to work for you is over.”

22 So Laban gave a feast for all the people there. 23 That evening he brought his daughter Leah to Jacob, and they had sexual relations. 24 (Laban gave his slave girl Zilpah to his daughter to be her servant.) 25 In the morning when Jacob saw that he had had sexual relations with Leah, he said to Laban, “What have you done to me? I worked hard for you so that I could marry Rachel! Why did you trick me?”

26 Laban said, “In our country we do not allow the younger daughter to marry before the older daughter. 27 But complete the full week of the marriage ceremony with Leah, and I will give you Rachel to marry also. But you must serve me another seven years.”

28 So Jacob did this, and when he had completed the week with Leah, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife. 29 (Laban gave his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.) 30 So Jacob had sexual relations with Rachel also, and Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. Jacob worked for Laban for another seven years.

Jacob’s Family Grows

31 When the Lord saw that Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah, he made it possible for Leah to have children, but not Rachel. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben,[a] because she said, “The Lord has seen my troubles. Surely now my husband will love me.”

33 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon[b] and said, “The Lord has heard that I am not loved, so he has given me this son.”

34 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Levi[c] and said, “Now, surely my husband will be close to me, because I have given him three sons.”

35 Then Leah gave birth to another son. She named him Judah,[d] because she said, “Now I will praise the Lord.” Then Leah stopped having children.

1 Timothy 3:14-4:10

The Secret of Our Life

14 Although I hope I can come to you soon, I am writing these things to you now. 15 Then, even if I am delayed, you will know how to live in the family of God. That family is the church of the living God, the support and foundation of the truth. 16 Without doubt, the secret of our life of worship is great:

He[a] was shown to us in a human body,
    proved right in spirit,
and seen by angels.
    He was proclaimed to the nations,
believed in by the world,
    and taken up in glory.

A Warning About False Teachers

Now the Holy Spirit clearly says that in the later times some people will stop believing the faith. They will follow spirits that lie and teachings of demons. Such teachings come from the false words of liars whose consciences are destroyed as if by a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and tell them not to eat certain foods which God created to be eaten with thanks by people who believe and know the truth. Everything God made is good, and nothing should be refused if it is accepted with thanks, because it is made holy by what God has said and by prayer.

Be a Good Servant of Christ

By telling these things to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus. You will be made strong by the words of the faith and the good teaching which you have been following. But do not follow foolish stories that disagree with God’s truth, but train yourself to serve God. Training your body helps you in some ways, but serving God helps you in every way by bringing you blessings in this life and in the future life, too. What I say is true, and you should fully accept it. 10 This is why we work and struggle:[b] We hope in the living God who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

Mark 10:23-31

23 Then Jesus looked at his followers and said, “How hard it will be for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The followers were amazed at what Jesus said. But he said again, “My children, it is very hard[a] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 The followers were even more surprised and said to each other, “Then who can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For people this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”

28 Peter said to Jesus, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.”

29 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, all those who have left houses, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or farms for me and for the Good News 30 will get more than they left. Here in this world they will have a hundred times more homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields. And with those things, they will also suffer for their belief. But in this age they will have life forever. 31 Many who are first now will be last in the future. And many who are last now will be first in the future.”
