Psalm 131-135

Psalm 131[a]

Humble Trust in God

A song of ascents. Of David.

Lord, my heart is not proud;
    nor are my eyes haughty.
I do not busy myself with great matters,
    with things too sublime for me.(A)
Rather, I have stilled my soul,
Like a weaned child to its mother,
    weaned is my soul.(B)
Israel, hope in the Lord,
    now and forever.

Psalm 132[b]

The Covenant Between David and God

A song of ascents.

I

Remember, O Lord, for David
    all his hardships;
How he swore an oath to the Lord,
    vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:[c]
“I will not enter the house where I live,(C)
    nor lie on the couch where I sleep;
I will give my eyes no sleep,
    my eyelids no rest,
Till I find a place for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
“We have heard of it in Ephrathah;[d]
    we have found it in the fields of Jaar.
Let us enter his dwelling;
    let us worship at his footstool.”(D)
“Arise, Lord, come to your resting place,(E)
    you and your mighty ark.
Your priests will be clothed with justice;
    your devout will shout for joy.”
10 For the sake of David your servant,
    do not reject your anointed.

II

11 The Lord swore an oath to David in truth,
    he will never turn back from it:(F)
“Your own offspring(G) I will set upon your throne.
12 If your sons observe my covenant,
    and my decrees I shall teach them,
Their sons, in turn,
    shall sit forever on your throne.”
13 Yes, the Lord has chosen Zion,
    desired it for a dwelling:
14 “This is my resting place forever;
    here I will dwell, for I desire it.
15 I will bless Zion with provisions;
    its poor I will fill with bread.
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation;
    its devout shall shout for joy.(H)
17 There I will make a horn sprout for David;[e](I)
    I will set a lamp for my anointed.
18 His foes I will clothe with shame,
    but on him his crown shall shine.”

Psalm 133[f]

A Vision of a Blessed Community

A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and how pleasant it is,
    when brothers[g] dwell together as one!
Like fine oil on the head,[h](J)
    running down upon the beard,
Upon the beard of Aaron,
    upon the collar of his robe.
Like dew[i] of Hermon coming down
    upon the mountains of Zion.(K)
There the Lord has decreed a blessing,
    life for evermore!(L)

Psalm 134[j]

Exhortation to the Night Watch to Bless God

A song of ascents.

O come, bless the Lord,
    all you servants of the Lord[k]
You who stand in the house of the Lord
    throughout the nights.(M)
Lift up your hands toward the sanctuary,(N)
    and bless the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.(O)

Psalm 135[l]

Praise of God, the Ruler and Benefactor of Israel

Hallelujah!

I

Praise the name of the Lord!
    Praise, you servants of the Lord,(P)
Who stand in the house of the Lord,
    in the courts of the house of our God!(Q)
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good!
    Sing to his name, for it brings joy!
[m]For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself,
    Israel as his treasured possession.(R)

II

For I know that the Lord is great,
    that our Lord is greater than all gods.(S)
Whatever the Lord desires
    he does in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all the depths.(T)
It is he who raises storm clouds from the end of the earth,
    makes lightning for the rain,
    and brings forth wind from his storehouse.(U)

III

He struck down Egypt’s firstborn,(V)
    of human being and beast alike,
And sent signs and wonders against you, Egypt,
    against Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 It is he who struck down many nations,(W)
    and slew mighty kings—
11 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    and Og, king of Bashan,
    all the kings of Canaan—
12 And made their land a heritage,
    a heritage for Israel his people.
13 O Lord, your name is forever,
    your renown, from generation to generation!(X)
14 For the Lord defends his people,
    shows mercy to his servants.(Y)

IV

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,(Z)
    the work of human hands.
16 They have mouths but do not speak;
    they have eyes but do not see;
17 They have ears but do not hear;
    nor is there breath in their mouths.
18 Their makers will become like them,
    and anyone who trusts in them.

V

19 House of Israel, bless the Lord!(AA)
    House of Aaron, bless the Lord!
20 House of Levi, bless the Lord!
    You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord from Zion,
    who dwells in Jerusalem!
Hallelujah!

Ruth 2:14-23

14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come here and have something to eat; dip your bread in the sauce.” Then as she sat near the harvesters, he handed her some roasted grain and she ate her fill and had some left over. 15 As she rose to glean, Boaz instructed his young people: “Let her glean among the sheaves themselves without scolding her, 16 and even drop some handfuls and leave them for her to glean; do not rebuke her.”

17 She gleaned in the field until evening, and when she beat out what she had gleaned it came to about an ephah[a] of barley, 18 which she took into the town and showed to her mother-in-law. Next she brought out what she had left over from the meal and gave it to her. 19 So her mother-in-law said to her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you go to work? May the one who took notice of you be blessed!” Then she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked. “The man at whose place I worked today is named Boaz,” she said. 20 (A)“May he be blessed by the Lord, who never fails to show kindness to the living and to the dead,” Naomi exclaimed to her daughter-in-law. She continued, “This man is a near relative of ours, one of our redeemers.”[b] 21 “He even told me,” added Ruth the Moabite, “Stay with my young people until they complete my entire harvest.” 22 “You would do well, my daughter,” Naomi rejoined, “to work with his young women; in someone else’s field you might be insulted.” 23 So she stayed gleaning with Boaz’s young women until the end of the barley and wheat harvests.

2 Corinthians 3

Chapter 3

[a](A)Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You are our letter,[b] written on our hearts, known and read by all, [c](B)shown to be a letter of Christ administered by us, written not in ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets that are hearts of flesh.

[d]Such confidence we have through Christ toward God. Not that of ourselves we are qualified to take credit for anything as coming from us; rather, our qualification comes from God,(C) who has indeed qualified us as ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of spirit;(D) for the letter brings death, but the Spirit gives life.[e]

Contrast with the Old Covenant. [f]Now if the ministry of death,[g] carved in letters on stone, was so glorious that the Israelites could not look intently at the face of Moses because of its glory that was going to fade,(E) how much more[h] will the ministry of the Spirit be glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation was glorious, the ministry of righteousness will abound much more in glory. 10 Indeed, what was endowed with glory has come to have no glory in this respect because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if what was going to fade was glorious, how much more will what endures be glorious.

12 Therefore, since we have such hope,[i] we act very boldly 13 and not like Moses,[j] who put a veil over his face so that the Israelites could not look intently at the cessation of what was fading. 14 Rather, their thoughts were rendered dull, for to this present day[k] the same veil remains unlifted when they read the old covenant, because through Christ it is taken away. 15 To this day, in fact, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts,(F) 16 but whenever a person turns to the Lord the veil is removed.(G) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit,[l] and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 [m]All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit.(H)

Matthew 5:27-37

Teaching About Adultery. 27 [a]“You have heard that it was said,(A) ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 [b]If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.(B) It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.

Teaching About Divorce. 31 [c]“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.’(C) 32 But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(D)

Teaching About Oaths. 33 [d](E)“Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.’ 34 (F)But I say to you, do not swear at all;[e] not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37 [f]Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.
