Psalm 66-67

Praise God for What He Has Done

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

66 Everything on earth, shout with joy to God!
Sing about his glory!
    Make his praise glorious!
Say to God, “Your works are amazing!
    Because your power is great,
    your enemies fall before you.
All the earth worships you
    and sings praises to you.
    They sing praises to your name.” Selah

Come and see what God has done,
    the amazing things he has done for people.
He turned the sea into dry land.
    The people crossed the river on foot.
    So let us rejoice because of what he did.
He rules forever with his power.
    He keeps his eye on the nations,
    so people should not turn against him. Selah

You people, praise our God;
    loudly sing his praise.
He protects our lives
    and does not let us be defeated.
10 God, you have tested us;
    you have purified us like silver.
11 You let us be trapped
    and put a heavy load on us.
12 You let our enemies walk on our heads.
    We went through fire and flood,
    but you brought us to a place with good things.

13 I will come to your Temple with burnt offerings.
    I will give you what I promised,
14 things I promised when I was in trouble.
15 I will bring you offerings of fat animals,
    and I will offer sheep, bulls, and goats. Selah

16 All of you who fear God, come and listen,
    and I will tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth
    and praised him with my tongue.
18 If I had known of any sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened to me.
19 But God has listened;
    he has heard my prayer.
20 Praise God,
    who did not ignore my prayer
    or hold back his love from me.

Everyone Should Praise God

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.

67 God, have mercy on us and bless us
    and show us your kindness Selah
so the world will learn your ways,
    and all nations will learn that you can save.

God, the people should praise you;
    all people should praise you.
The nations should be glad and sing
    because you judge people fairly.
    You guide all the nations on earth. Selah
God, the people should praise you;
    all people should praise you.

The land has given its crops.
    God, our God, blesses us.
God blesses us
    so people all over the earth will fear him.

Psalm 19

God’s Works and Word

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

19 The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the skies announce what his hands have made.
Day after day they tell the story;
    night after night they tell it again.
They have no speech or words;
    they have no voice to be heard.
But their message goes out through all the world;
    their words go everywhere on earth.
The sky is like a home for the sun.
The sun comes out like a bridegroom from his bedroom.
    It rejoices like an athlete eager to run a race.
The sun rises at one end of the sky
    and follows its path to the other end.
    Nothing hides from its heat.

The teachings of the Lord are perfect;
    they give new strength.
The rules of the Lord can be trusted;
    they make plain people wise.
The orders of the Lord are right;
    they make people happy.
The commands of the Lord are pure;
    they light up the way.
Respect for the Lord is good;
    it will last forever.
The judgments of the Lord are true;
    they are completely right.
10 They are worth more than gold,
    even the purest gold.
They are sweeter than honey,
    even the finest honey.
11 By them your servant is warned.
    Keeping them brings great reward.

12 People cannot see their own mistakes.
    Forgive me for my secret sins.
13 Keep me from the sins of pride;
    don’t let them rule me.
Then I can be pure
    and innocent of the greatest of sins.

14 I hope my words and thoughts please you.
    Lord, you are my Rock, the one who saves me.

Psalm 46

God Protects His People

For the director of music. By alamoth. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

46 God is our protection and our strength.
    He always helps in times of trouble.
So we will not be afraid even if the earth shakes,
    or the mountains fall into the sea,
even if the oceans roar and foam,
    or the mountains shake at the raging sea. Selah

There is a river that brings joy to the city of God,
    the holy place where God Most High lives.
God is in that city, and so it will not be shaken.
    God will help her at dawn.
Nations tremble and kingdoms shake.
    God shouts and the earth crumbles.

The Lord All-Powerful is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our defender. Selah

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the amazing things he has done on the earth.
He stops wars everywhere on the earth.
    He breaks all bows and spears
    and burns up the chariots with fire.
10 God says, “Be still and know that I am God.
    I will be praised in all the nations;
    I will be praised throughout the earth.”

11 The Lord All-Powerful is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our defender. Selah

Hosea 2:2-14

God Speaks About Israel

“Plead with your mother.[a]
    Accuse her, because she is no longer my wife,
    and I am no longer her husband.
Tell her to stop acting like a prostitute,
    to stop behaving like an unfaithful wife.
If she refuses, I will strip her naked
    and leave her bare like the day she was born.
I will make her dry like a desert,
    like a land without water,
    and I will kill her with thirst.
I will not take pity on her children,
    because they are the children of a prostitute.
Their mother has acted like a prostitute;
    the one who became pregnant with them has acted disgracefully.
She said, ‘I will chase after my lovers,[b]
    who give me my food and water,
wool and flax, wine and olive oil.’
So I will block her road with thornbushes;
    I will build a wall around her
    so she cannot find her way.
She will run after her lovers,
    but she won’t catch them.
She will look for them,
    but she won’t find them.
Then she will say, ‘I will go back to my first husband,[c]
    because life was better then for me than it is now.’
But she does not know that I was the one
    who gave her grain, new wine, and oil.
I gave her much silver and gold,
    but she used it for Baal.

“So I will come back and take away my grain at harvest time
    and my new wine when it is ready.
I will take back my wool and linen
    that covered her nakedness.
10 So I will show her nakedness to her lovers,
    and no one will save her from me.
11 I will put an end to all her celebrations:
    her yearly festivals, her New Moon festivals, and her Sabbaths.
    I will stop all of her special feasts.
12 I will destroy her vines and fig trees,
    which she said were her pay from her lovers.
I will turn them into a forest,
    and wild animals will eat them.
13 I will punish her for all the times
    she burned incense to the Baals.
She put on her rings and jewelry
    and went chasing after her lovers,
but she forgot me!”
    says the Lord.

14 “So I am going to attract her;
    I will lead her into the desert
    and speak tenderly to her.

James 3:1-13

Controlling the Things We Say

My brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. We all make many mistakes. If people never said anything wrong, they would be perfect and able to control their entire selves, too. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can control their whole bodies. Also a ship is very big, and it is pushed by strong winds. But a very small rudder controls that big ship, making it go wherever the pilot wants. It is the same with the tongue. It is a small part of the body, but it brags about great things.

A big forest fire can be started with only a little flame. And the tongue is like a fire. It is a whole world of evil among the parts of our bodies. The tongue spreads its evil through the whole body. The tongue is set on fire by hell, and it starts a fire that influences all of life. People can tame every kind of wild animal, bird, reptile, and fish, and they have tamed them, but no one can tame the tongue. It is wild and evil and full of deadly poison. We use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people, whom God made like himself. 10 Praises and curses come from the same mouth! My brothers and sisters, this should not happen. 11 Do good and bad water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree make olives, or can a grapevine make figs? No! And a well full of salty water cannot give good water.

True Wisdom

13 Are there those among you who are truly wise and understanding? Then they should show it by living right and doing good things with a gentleness that comes from wisdom.

Matthew 13:44-52

Stories of a Treasure and a Pearl

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. One day a man found the treasure, and then he hid it in the field again. He was so happy that he went and sold everything he owned to buy that field.

45 “Also, the kingdom of heaven is like a man looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found a very valuable pearl, he went and sold everything he had and bought it.

A Story of a Fishing Net

47 “Also, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was put into the lake and caught many different kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled the net to the shore. They sat down and put all the good fish in baskets and threw away the bad fish. 49 It will be this way at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the evil people from the good people. 50 The angels will throw the evil people into the blazing furnace, where people will cry and grind their teeth with pain.”

51 Jesus asked his followers, “Do you understand all these things?”

They answered, “Yes, we understand.”

52 Then Jesus said to them, “So every teacher of the law who has been taught about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house. He brings out both new things and old things he has saved.”
