Psalm 81-82

Psalm 81

A Call to Obedience

For the choir director: on the Gittith. Of Asaph.(A)

Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.(B)
Lift up a song—play the tambourine,
the melodious lyre, and the harp.(C)
Blow the horn on the day of our feasts[a][b]
during the new moon(D)
and during the full moon.
For this is a statute for Israel,
a judgment of the God of Jacob.(E)
He set it up as an ordinance for Joseph
when He went throughout[c] the land of Egypt.(F)

I heard an unfamiliar language:
“I relieved his shoulder from the burden;
his hands were freed from carrying the basket.(G)
You called out in distress, and I rescued you;
I answered you from the thundercloud.(H)
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.(I)Selah
Listen, My people, and I will admonish you.
Israel, if you would only listen to Me!(J)
There must not be a strange god among you;
you must not bow down to a foreign god.(K)
10 I am Yahweh your God,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt.(L)
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.(M)

11 “But My people did not listen to Me;
Israel did not obey Me.(N)
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
to follow their own plans.(O)
13 If only My people would listen to Me
and Israel would follow My ways,(P)
14 I would quickly subdue their enemies
and turn My hand against their foes.”(Q)
15 Those who hate the Lord
would pretend submission to Him;(R)
their doom would last forever.(S)
16 But He would feed Israel[d] with the best wheat.
“I would satisfy you with honey from the rock.”(T)

Psalm 82

A Plea for Righteous Judgment

A psalm of Asaph.(U)

God has taken His place in the divine assembly;
He judges among the gods:[e](V)
“How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?(W)Selah
Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless;
uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.(X)
Rescue the poor and needy;
save them from the power of the wicked.”(Y)

They do not know or understand;
they wander in darkness.(Z)
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.(AA)

I said, “You are gods;(AB)
you are all sons of the Most High.(AC)
However, you will die like men
and fall like any other ruler.”(AD)

Rise up, God, judge the earth,
for all the nations belong to You.(AE)

Esther 6

Mordecai Honored by the King

That night sleep escaped(A) the king, so he ordered the book recording daily events to be brought and read to the king. They found the written report of how Mordecai had informed on Bigthana and Teresh, two eunuchs who guarded the king’s entrance, when they planned to assassinate King Ahasuerus.(B) The king inquired, “What honor and special recognition have been given to Mordecai for this act?”(C)

The king’s personal attendants replied, “Nothing has been done for him.”

The king asked, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman was just entering the outer court of the palace to ask the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared for him.(D)

The king’s attendants answered him, “Haman is there, standing in the court.”

“Have him enter,” the king ordered.

Haman entered, and the king asked him, “What should be done for the man the king wants to honor?”(E)

Haman thought to himself, “Who is it the king would want to honor more than me?” Haman told the king, “For the man the king wants to honor: Have them bring a royal garment that the king himself has worn(F) and a horse the king himself has ridden,(G) which has a royal diadem on its head. Put the garment and the horse under the charge of one of the king’s most noble officials.(H) Have them clothe the man the king wants to honor, parade him on the horse through the city square, and proclaim before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor.’”

10 The king told Haman, “Hurry, and do just as you proposed. Take a garment and a horse for Mordecai the Jew,(I) who is sitting at the King’s Gate. Do not leave out anything you have suggested.” 11 So Haman took the garment and the horse. He clothed Mordecai and paraded him through the city square, crying out before him, “This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor.”

12 Then Mordecai returned to the King’s Gate,(J) but Haman, overwhelmed,[a] hurried off for home with his head covered.(K) 13 Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends(L) everything that had happened. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since Mordecai is Jewish, and you have begun to fall before him, you won’t overcome him, because your downfall is certain.”(M) 14 While they were still speaking with him, the eunuchs of the king(N) arrived and rushed Haman to the banquet Esther had prepared.(O)

Acts 19:1-10

Twelve Disciples of John the Baptist

19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples(A) and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

“No,” they told him, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”(B)

“Then what baptism were you baptized with?” he asked them.

“With John’s baptism,” they replied.

Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”(C)

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands on(D) them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in other languages and to prophesy.(E) Now there were about 12 men in all.

In the Lecture Hall of Tyrannus

Then he entered the synagogue and spoke boldly over a period of three months, engaging in discussion and trying to persuade them about the things of the kingdom of God.(F) But when some became hardened and would not believe, slandering the Way in front of the crowd, he withdrew from them and met separately with the disciples, conducting discussions every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.(G) 10 And this went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the message about the Lord.(H)

Luke 4:1-13

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus(A) returned from the Jordan,(B) full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for 40 days to be tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over,[a] He was hungry. The Devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.[b](C)[c]

So he took Him up[d] and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. The Devil said to Him, “I will give You their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me,(D) and I can give it to anyone I want. If You, then, will worship me,[e] all will be Yours.”

And Jesus answered him,[f] “It is written:

Worship the Lord your God,
and serve(E) Him only.[g]

So he took Him to Jerusalem, had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

He will give His angels orders concerning you,
to protect you,(F)[h] 11 and
they will support you with their hands,
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.(G)[i]

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.(H)[j]

13 After the Devil had finished every temptation, he departed from Him for a time.
