Psalm 116

Psalm 116[a]

116 I love the Lord
because he heard my plea for mercy,[b]
and listened to me.[c]
As long as I live, I will call to him when I need help.[d]
The ropes of death tightened around me,[e]
the snares[f] of Sheol confronted me.
I was confronted[g] with trouble and sorrow.
I called on the name of the Lord,
“Please, Lord, rescue my life!”
The Lord is merciful and fair;
our God is compassionate.
The Lord protects[h] the untrained;[i]
I was in serious trouble[j] and he delivered me.
Rest once more, my soul,[k]
for the Lord has vindicated you.[l]
Yes,[m] Lord,[n] you rescued my life from death,
kept my eyes from tears
and my feet from stumbling.
I will serve[o] the Lord
in the land[p] of the living.
10 I had faith when I said,
“I am severely oppressed.”
11 I rashly declared,[q]
“All men are liars.”
12 How can I repay the Lord
for all his acts of kindness to me?
13 I will celebrate my deliverance,[r]
and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
before all his people.
15 The Lord values
the lives of his faithful followers.[s]
16 Yes, Lord! I am indeed your servant;
I am your servant, the son of your female servant.[t]
You saved me from death.[u]
17 I will present a thank offering to you,
and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
before all his people,
19 in the courts of the Lord’s temple,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Zephaniah 3:14-20

14 Shout for joy, Daughter Zion![a]
Shout out, Israel!
Be happy and boast with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has removed the judgment against you;[b]
he has turned back your enemy.
Israel’s king, the Lord, is in your midst!
You no longer need to fear disaster.
16 On that day they will say[c] to Jerusalem,
“Don’t be afraid, Zion!
Your hands must not be paralyzed from panic![d]
17 The Lord your God is in your midst;
he is a warrior who can deliver.
He takes great delight in you;[e]
he renews you by his love;[f]
he shouts for joy over you.”[g]
18 “As for those who grieve because they cannot attend the festivals—
I took them away from you;
they became tribute and were a source of shame to you.[h]
19 Look, at that time I will deal with those who mistreated you.
I will rescue the lame sheep[i]
and gather together the scattered sheep.
I will take away their humiliation
and make the whole earth admire and respect them.[j]
20 At that time I will lead you—
at the time I gather you together.[k]
Be sure of this![l] I will make all the nations of the earth respect and admire you[m]
when you see me restore you,”[n] says the Lord.

Mark 15:47-16:7

47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body[a] was placed.

The Resurrection

16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought aromatic spices[b] so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, at sunrise, they went to the tomb. They had been asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” But[c] when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled back. Then[d] as they went into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe[e] sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.[f] He has been raised![g] He is not here. Look, there is the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples, even Peter, that he is going ahead of you into Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.”

Psalm 30

Psalm 30[a]

A psalm, a song used at the dedication of the temple;[b] by David.

30 I will praise you, O Lord, for you lifted me up,[c]
and did not allow my enemies to gloat[d] over me.
O Lord my God,
I cried out to you and you healed me.[e]
O Lord, you pulled me[f] up from Sheol;
you rescued me from among those descending into the grave.[g]
Sing to the Lord, you faithful followers[h] of his;
give thanks to his holy name.[i]
For his anger lasts only a brief moment,
and his good favor restores one’s life.[j]
One may experience sorrow during the night,
but joy arrives in the morning.[k]
In my self-confidence I said,
“I will never be shaken.”[l]
O Lord, in your good favor you made me secure.[m]
Then you rejected me[n] and I was terrified.
To you, O Lord, I cried out;
I begged the Lord for mercy:[o]
“What[p] profit is there in taking my life,[q]
in my descending into the Pit?[r]
Can the dust of the grave[s] praise you?
Can it declare your loyalty?[t]
10 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me.
O Lord, deliver me.”[u]
11 Then you turned my lament into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and covered me with joy.[v]
12 So now[w] my heart[x] will sing to you and not be silent;
O Lord my God, I will always[y] give thanks to you.

Psalm 149

Psalm 149[a]

149 Praise the Lord.
Sing to the Lord a new song.
Praise him in the assembly of the godly.[b]
Let Israel rejoice in their Creator.
Let the people[c] of Zion delight in their King.[d]
Let them praise his name with dancing.
Let them sing praises to him to the accompaniment of the tambourine and harp.
For the Lord takes delight in his people;
he exalts the oppressed by delivering them.[e]
Let the godly rejoice because of their vindication.[f]
Let them shout for joy upon their beds.[g]
May the praises of God be in their mouths
and a two-edged sword in their hands,
in order to take[h] revenge on the nations,
and punish foreigners.
The godly bind[i] their enemies’ kings in chains,
and their nobles in iron shackles,
and execute the judgment to which their enemies[j] have been sentenced.[k]
All his loyal followers will be vindicated.[l]
Praise the Lord.

2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Thanksgiving for God’s Comfort

Blessed is[a] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles[b] so that we may be able to comfort those experiencing any trouble[c] with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings[d] of Christ[e] overflow[f] toward us, so also our comfort through Christ overflows to you.[g] But if we are afflicted,[h] it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort that you experience in your patient endurance of the same sufferings that we also suffer. And our hope for you is steadfast because we know that as you share in[i] our sufferings, so also you will share in[j] our comfort.
