Psalm 24

This is a song that David wrote.

The great King[a]

24 The whole earth belongs to the Lord.
Everybody who lives in the world
and all the things in it belong to him.
The Lord built the foundation of the earth.
He built it on the seas and the rivers.[b]

Who may climb up the hill of the Lord?[c]
Who can stand in his holy place?[d]
Only the person who does what is right,
    and who has pure thoughts.
He does not worship idols
and he does not make false promises.
The Lord will bless people who are like that.
God will save them.
He will say that they are not guilty of wrong things.
People like that come to God.
    They want to please him.
They like to pray to the God of Jacob.
Selah.
Old gates of the city, wake up!
Open now, to leave a wide path!
Then the great king will come in.
Who is this great king?
He is the Lord,
    who is strong and powerful.
He is the Lord,
    who wins against his enemies.
Be ready, you old gates of the city!
    Be ready to open wide!
Then the great king will come in.
10 Who is this great king?
He is the Almighty Lord.
Yes, he is the great king!
Selah.

Psalm 29

This is a song that David wrote.

The storm[a]

29 All you angels in heaven,
say how great the Lord is!
Say that the Lord rules with power!
Say that the Lord's name is great!
Worship the Lord for who he is,
and remember that he is holy.
The voice of the Lord shouts over the water.
The God of glory makes the noise of thunder.
The Lord appears over the great sea.[b]
The Lord's voice is powerful.
It has the authority of a king!
When the Lord shouts,
    even the cedar trees break!
Yes! The Lord breaks the great cedar trees of Lebanon.[c]
He makes Lebanon jump like a calf.
He causes Hermon mountain to shake
    like a young bull jumps.
The Lord's voice makes fire
    like lightning in the sky.
When the Lord shouts,
    the desert shakes!
He makes the Kadesh desert shake!
When the Lord shouts,
the big oak trees bend over.
The leaves fall off all the trees in the forests.
But in his temple,
    everyone says, ‘He is great!’
10 The Lord rules as king over the deep waters.[d]
The Lord will be king for ever.
11 The Lord makes his people strong.
The Lord blesses his people with peace.

Psalm 8

The music leader must use special music.

This is a song that David wrote.

The sky at night[a]

Lord, our ruler,
your name is famous all over the world.
The sky above shows how great you are.
You have taught children and babies to praise you.
You do that to show your enemies how strong you are.
Anyone who turns against you has to be quiet.
Your cruel enemies can do nothing!
You made the skies with your own hands.
When I look up, I see the moon and the stars.
You have put them all in their right place.
So why do you even think about men and women?
Why do you take care of humans?
You have made their place a little below God himself.[b]
You have given them honour, like kings.
You have chosen them to rule everything that you have made.
You have put everything under their authority.
7-8 Yes! Humans rule them all:
    Farm animals and wild animals,
birds, fish and all the things that swim in the sea.

Lord, our ruler,
your name is famous all over the world.

Psalm 84

Korah's sons wrote this song for the music leader. Use special music.

The journey to Zion

84 Lord Almighty,
the temple where you live is beautiful!
I want very much to go to the Lord's temple.
I very much want to be in the temple yards.
With all that I am, and with great joy,
I sing to you, the God who lives for ever!
In your temple,
    even sparrows[a] have their homes.
Swallows builds their nests there,
to take care of their babies.
They can be near to your altars,
Lord Almighty, my king and my God.
You have truly blessed those people
    who live in your temple.
They can praise you all the time!
Selah.
You have blessed those people
who come to you to make them strong.
They love to travel to your temple in Zion.
As they go through the dry Baka valley,
    springs of water appear there!
The autumn rain covers the valley with pools.
The people become stronger as they travel,
until each one meets with God in Zion.[b]
Lord God Almighty,
    please listen to my prayer!
God of Jacob, hear me!
Selah.
God, look at our king,
the one who protects us like a shield!
Take care of the king that you have chosen.
10 I would rather be near your temple for one day
than have a thousand days anywhere else.
I would rather stand near the door of God's temple
    than live among wicked people.
11 The Lord God is like a sun
and a shield for his people.
He is kind to his people
and he gives glory to them.
To those who do what is right,
he gives every good thing that they need.
12 Lord Almighty,
you have truly blessed everyone who trusts in you!

Nehemiah 5

Nehemiah helps poor people

Some men and their wives were upset, because of the things that some other Jews were doing. Many of them said, ‘We are big families, with many sons and daughters. We need to have food to eat so that we can stay alive.’ Other people said, ‘People have to lend us money to buy food. We have to give them our fields, our vineyards and our homes until we can pay them back.’

Other people said, ‘We have to pay taxes to the king for our fields and our vineyards. People had to lend us money to pay the taxes. Now we have to sell our sons and daughters as slaves so that we can pay back the money. But we are from the same human family as those other Jews. Our children are not different from their children. Already some of our daughters have become slaves. Our fields and vineyards now belong to other people, so we are helpless to do anything.’

When I heard what they were complaining about, I was very angry. I thought carefully about what they had said. Then I said to the Jewish leaders and officers, ‘You are cheating your own people! You are taking back more money than you have lent to them.’

I told the Jews to come together for a big meeting. I said to them all, ‘When our own Jewish people have become slaves of foreign people, we have tried hard to buy them back. But now you are making your own people sell their children to you. And you want us to pay you to buy them back again!’ The Jewish leaders kept quiet. They had nothing to say.

Then I said to them, ‘You are doing something that is completely wrong. Instead, you should obey God and live in a good way. Then the foreign people who are our enemies will not have a chance to insult us. 10 I myself have agreed to lend poor people money and food. My family and my friends have done the same thing. But we must not make those poor people pay back more to us. 11 Now you must give back to them their fields, their vineyards, their gardens of olive trees and their houses. Do not make them pay any extra money for the money, food, wine or olive oil that you lent to them.’

12 The leaders replied, ‘We will give everything back to them. We will not make them pay back their debts to us. We will do everything that you have said.’

I told the priests to come to our meeting. While they were with us, I made the Jewish leaders and officers make a strong promise. They agreed to do what they had promised to do. 13 I shook my coat so that everything fell out of its pockets. I said, ‘You must all do what you have promised to do. If not, I pray that God will shake you out like that! He will take away your homes and all your things. You will be left with nothing!’ Everyone at the meeting said, ‘Amen, we agree!’ They praised the Lord.

All the people did what they had promised to do.

14 All the time that I ruled the land of Judah, I did not eat the government officer's special food. I was the ruler from the 20th year of King Artaxerxes until his 32nd year as king. For all those 12 years, I and my relatives refused to eat the special food. 15 The officers who ruled there before I came made much trouble for the people. They took food and wine from the people, as well as 40 silver coins every day. Their servants also gave the people much trouble. But I did not live like them, because I wanted to please God. 16 I worked hard to help the work on the city's walls. I did not take any land for myself. All my servants also had to join with me in the work.

17 150 Jews and their officers ate meals with me. There were also people who came to visit from countries that were near to us. 18 Every day, my servants cooked one ox, six good sheep and some birds for us to eat. Every ten days they bought for me many different kinds of wine. But I did not ask to receive the extra food that the ruler usually receives. The people were working hard on the wall and I did not want to give them more trouble.

19 My God, please remember the many things that I have done to help my people. Please bless me.

Acts 20:7-12

Paul visits the believers in Troas for the last time

On the Sunday evening, we met together with the believers. We broke bread into pieces and we shared it with each other. Paul spoke to the believers for a long time, until midnight. This was because he wanted to leave Troas the next day.

Many lamps were burning in the upstairs room where we met together. A young man called Eutychus was at the meeting. He was sitting on the edge of a window. When Paul had talked for a long time, Eutychus started to sleep. When he was really sleeping, he fell out of the window. He dropped down a long way to the ground. Some of the believers lifted him up, but he was dead. 10 So Paul went down the stairs to them all. He lay on top of the young man and held him with his arms. Then Paul said to them all, ‘Do not be afraid. He is still alive.’ 11 Paul went back upstairs. He shared bread with the believers and he ate more food. Paul talked to them for a long time, until the sun rose in the morning. Then he left Troas.

12 The other believers took Eutychus to his home. They were very happy because he was alive.

Luke 12:22-31

Do not have troubles in your mind

22 Jesus said to his disciples, ‘I tell you this: You should not worry about how to stay alive. Do not worry about the food that you need to stay alive. Do not worry about the clothes that you need to wear. 23 Your life is more important than the food that you eat. Your body is more important than your clothes.

24 Think about the birds. They do not plant seeds in the ground. They do not cut down plants to eat. They have no buildings to store food. But God gives them food to eat. You are much more valuable than the birds. 25 Even if you always worry about your life, you cannot make it as much as one hour longer! 26 No, you cannot even do a small thing like that. So, if you are always worrying about the things that you need, will that really help you?

27 Think about how the wild flowers grow. They do not do work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you this about them: Even one wild flower is more beautiful than King Solomon was. And King Solomon wore the most beautiful clothes. 28 It is God that gives beautiful clothes even to the grass. One day the grass is growing in the field, but the next day people will cut it and burn it.[a] God will certainly take care of you, much more than he takes care of the grass. You should trust him more than you do!

29 Do not always be thinking about the food and drink that you need. Do not worry about things like that. 30 People who do not know God are always trying to get these things. But as for you, your Father God knows that you need them. 31 Instead, always think about the things that are important in the kingdom of God. Then God will also give you the things that you need each day.
