Psalm 146[a]

Trust in God the Creator and Redeemer

Hallelujah!

Praise the Lord, my soul;
    I will praise the Lord all my life,
    sing praise to my God while I live.(A)

I

Put no trust in princes,
    in children of Adam powerless to save.(B)
    Who breathing his last, returns to the earth;
    that day all his planning comes to nothing.(C)

II

Blessed the one whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose hope is in the Lord, his God,
The maker of heaven and earth,
    the seas and all that is in them,(D)
Who keeps faith forever,
    secures justice for the oppressed,(E)
    who gives bread to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free;(F)
    the Lord gives sight to the blind.
The Lord raises up those who are bowed down;(G)
    the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord protects the resident alien,
    comes to the aid of the orphan and the widow,(H)
    but thwarts the way of the wicked.
10 The Lord shall reign forever,
    your God, Zion, through all generations!(I)
Hallelujah!

Psalm 147[b]

God’s Word Restores Jerusalem

Hallelujah!

I

How good to sing praise to our God;
    how pleasant to give fitting praise.(J)
The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem,
    and gathers the dispersed of Israel,(K)
Healing the brokenhearted,
    and binding up their wounds.(L)
He numbers the stars,
    and gives to all of them their names.(M)
Great is our Lord, vast in power,
    with wisdom beyond measure.(N)
The Lord gives aid to the poor,
    but casts the wicked to the ground.(O)

II

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    with the lyre make music to our God,(P)
[c]Who covers the heavens with clouds,
    provides rain for the earth,
    makes grass sprout on the mountains,(Q)
Who gives animals their food
    and young ravens what they cry for.(R)
10 [d]He takes no delight in the strength of horses,
    no pleasure in the runner’s stride.(S)
11 Rather the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    those who put their hope in his mercy.

III

12 Glorify the Lord, Jerusalem;
    Zion, offer praise to your God,
13 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates,
    blessed your children within you.(T)
14 He brings peace to your borders,
    and satisfies you with finest wheat.(U)
15 [e]He sends his command to earth;
    his word runs swiftly!(V)
16 Thus he makes the snow like wool,
    and spreads the frost like ash;(W)
17 He disperses hail like crumbs.
    Who can withstand his cold?
18 Yet when again he issues his command, it melts them;
    he raises his winds and the waters flow.
19 He proclaims his word to Jacob,
    his statutes and laws to Israel.(X)
20 He has not done this for any other nation;
    of such laws they know nothing.
Hallelujah!

Psalm 111-113

Psalm 111[a]

Praise of God for Goodness to Israel

Hallelujah!

I will praise the Lord with all my heart(A)
    in the assembled congregation of the upright.[b]
Great are the works of the Lord,
    studied by all who delight in them.
Majestic and glorious is his work,
    his righteousness endures forever.
He won renown for his wondrous deeds;
    gracious and merciful is the Lord.(B)
He gives food to those who fear him,[c]
    he remembers his covenant forever.
He showed his powerful deeds to his people,
    giving them the inheritance of the nations.
The works of his hands are true and just,
    reliable all his decrees,
Established forever and ever,
    to be observed with truth and equity.
He sent release to his people,
    decreed his covenant forever;
    holy and fearsome is his name.
10 [d]The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;(C)
    prudent are all who practice it.
    His praise endures forever.

Psalm 112[e]

The Blessings of the Just

Hallelujah!

Blessed the man who fears the Lord,
    who greatly delights in his commands.(D)
His descendants shall be mighty in the land,
    a generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches shall be in his house;
    his righteousness[f] shall endure forever.
Light shines through the darkness for the upright;(E)
    gracious, compassionate, and righteous.
It is good for the man gracious in lending,
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For he shall never be shaken;
    the righteous shall be remembered forever.(F)
He shall not fear an ill report;
    his heart is steadfast, trusting the Lord.
His heart is tranquil, without fear,
    till at last he looks down on his foes.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
    his righteousness shall endure forever;(G)
    his horn[g] shall be exalted in honor.
10 The wicked sees and is angry;
    gnashes his teeth and wastes away;
    the desire of the wicked come to nothing.

Praise, you servants of the Lord,
    praise the name of the Lord.(H)
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    both now and forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting(I)
    let the name of the Lord be praised.

II

High above all nations is the Lord;
    above the heavens his glory.(J)
Who is like the Lord our God,
    enthroned on high,
    (K)looking down on heaven and earth?
He raises the needy from the dust,
    lifts the poor from the ash heap,(L)
Seats them with princes,
    the princes of the people,
Gives the childless wife a home,
    the joyful mother of children.(M)
Hallelujah!

2 Samuel 24:1-2

Chapter 24

David’s Census; the Plague. The Lord’s anger against Israel flared again,(A) and he incited David against them: “Go, take a census of Israel and Judah.” The king therefore said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him, “Tour all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the people, that I may know their number.”

2 Samuel 24:10-25

10 Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people. David said to the Lord: “I have sinned grievously in what I have done.(A) Take away, Lord, your servant’s guilt, for I have acted very foolishly.”[a] 11 When David rose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying: 12 Go, tell David: Thus says the Lord: I am offering you three options; choose one of them, and I will give you that. 13 Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: “Should three years of famine come upon your land; or three months of fleeing from your enemy while he pursues you; or is it to be three days of plague in your land? Now consider well: what answer am I to give to him who sent me?”(B) 14 David answered Gad: “I am greatly distressed. But let us fall into the hand of God, whose mercy is great, rather than into human hands.” 15 Thus David chose the plague. At the time of the wheat harvest it broke out among the people. The Lord sent plague over Israel from morning until the time appointed, and from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand of the people died. 16 But when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord changed his mind about the calamity, and said to the angel causing the destruction among the people: Enough now! Stay your hand.(C) The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.(D) 17 When David saw the angel who was striking the people, he said to the Lord: “It is I who have sinned; it is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong. But these sheep, what have they done? Strike me and my father’s family!”

David Offers Sacrifices. 18 On the same day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go and set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19 According to Gad’s word, David went up as the Lord had commanded. 20 Now Araunah looked down and saw the king and his servants coming toward him while he was threshing wheat. So he went out and bowed down before the king, his face to the ground. 21 Then Araunah asked, “Why does my lord the king come to his servant?” David replied, “To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be withdrawn from the people.” 22 (E)But Araunah said to David: “Let my lord the king take it and offer up what is good in his sight. See, here are the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of oxen for wood. 23 All this does Araunah give to the king.” Araunah then said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept your offering.” 24 The king, however, replied to Araunah, “No, I will buy it from you at the proper price, for I cannot sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty silver shekels. 25 Then David built an altar to the Lord there, and sacrificed burnt offerings and communion offerings. The Lord granted relief to the land, and the plague was withdrawn from Israel.

Galatians 3:23-4:7

23 Before faith came, we were held in custody under law, confined for the faith that was to be revealed.(A) 24 Consequently, the law was our disciplinarian[a] for Christ, that we might be justified by faith.(B) 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a disciplinarian.(C) 26 For through faith you are all children of God[b] in Christ Jesus.(D) 27 [c]For all of you who were baptized into Christ(E) have clothed yourselves with Christ.[d] 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.(F) 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendant, heirs according to the promise.(G)

Chapter 4

God’s Free Children in Christ.[e] I mean that as long as the heir is not of age,[f] he is no different from a slave, although he is the owner of everything, but he is under the supervision of guardians and administrators until the date set by his father. (H)In the same way we also, when we were not of age, were enslaved to the elemental powers of the world.[g] But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,(I) to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption.(J) As proof that you are children,[h] God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”(K) So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.(L)

Do Not Throw This Freedom Away.[i]

John 8:12-20

12 Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(A) 13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony can be verified,[a] because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.(B) 15 You judge by appearances,[b] but I do not judge anyone.(C) 16 And even if I should judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Father who sent me.(D) 17 Even in your law[c] it is written that the testimony of two men can be verified.(E) 18 I testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me.”(F) 19 So they said to him, “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(G) 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.(H)
