Psalm 131-135

Psalm 131

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

Lord, my heart is not haughty,
    my eyes are not raised too high.
I have not striven for enormities,
    for things too wonderful for me.
I composed and quieted my desire,
    like a child given suck by his mother;
    like a child who sucks is my desire within me.

Let Israel hope in the Lord
    from now and forever.

Psalm 132(A)

A Song of Ascents.

O Lord, remember David
    and all his afflictions,
how he swore unto the Lord,
    and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob:
“I will not come into my house,
    nor go up to my bed;
I will not give sleep to my eyes,
    or slumber to my eyelids,
until I find a place for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the mighty God of Jacob.”

We heard of it in Ephrathah;
    we found it in the fields of Jaar.
“We will go to His dwelling place,
    we will worship at His footstool.”
Arise, O Lord, go to Your resting place,
    You and the ark of Your strength.
Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness,
    and let Your godly ones shout for joy.

10 For Your servant David’s sake,
    do not turn away Your anointed king.

11 The Lord has sworn with a sure oath to David
    that He will not turn from it:
“From the fruit of your body
    I will set a son on your throne.
12 If your children will keep My covenant
    and My testimonies that I shall teach them,
then their children shall also sit
    upon your throne forever.”

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
    He has desired it for His dwelling:
14 “This is My resting place forever;
    here I will dwell, for I have chosen it.
15 I will abundantly bless her provisions;
    I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation,
    and her godly ones shall shout for joy.

17 “There I will make a horn sprout for David;
    I have prepared a lamp for My anointed one.
18 His enemies I will clothe with shame,
    but on him his crown will shine.”

Psalm 133

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
    for brothers to dwell together in unity!

It is like precious oil upon the head,
    that runs down on the beard—
even Aaron’s beard—
    and going down to the collar of his garments;
as the dew of Hermon,
    that descends upon the mountains of Zion,
for there the Lord has commanded the blessing,
    even life forever.

Psalm 134

A Song of Ascents.

Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord,
    who by night stand in the house of the Lord.
Lift up your hands in the sanctuary,
    and bless the Lord.

May the Lord who made heaven and earth
    bless you from Zion.

Psalm 135(B)

Praise the Lord!

Praise the name of the Lord
    praise Him, O servants of the Lord,
you who stand in the house of the Lord,
    in the courts of the house of our God!

Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
    sing praises unto His name, for it is pleasant.
For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself,
    and Israel for His special possession.

For I know that the Lord is great,
    and that our Lord is above all gods.
Whatever the Lord pleases,
    He does in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all the depths.
He causes the clouds to ascend from the ends of the earth;
    He makes lightning for the rain;
    He brings the wind out from His storehouses.

He struck down the firstborn of Egypt,
    both of man and animal.
He sent signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt,
    against Pharaoh and all his servants;
10 He struck down great nations
    and slew mighty kings—
11 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
    and Og king of Bashan,
    and all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12 and gave their land for an inheritance,
    a possession to Israel His people.

13 Your name, O Lord, endures forever;
    and Your renown, O Lord, throughout all generations.
14 For the Lord will defend His people,
    and He will have compassion on His servants.

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    the work of men’s hands.
16 They have mouths, but do not speak;
    they have eyes, but do not see;
17 they have ears, but do not hear;
    neither is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them are like them;
    so is everyone who trusts in them.

19 Bless the Lord, O house of Israel;
    bless the Lord, O house of Aaron.
20 Bless the Lord, O house of Levi;
    you who fear the Lord, bless the Lord.
21 Blessed be the Lord from Zion,
    who dwells at Jerusalem.

Praise you the Lord!

1 Samuel 13:5-18

The Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, with people like the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and camped in Mikmash, east of Beth Aven. When Israel’s fighting men saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in hollows, among rocks, and in cellars and cisterns. Some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead.

But as for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him, trembling. He waited seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattered from him. Saul said, “Bring here to me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” Then he offered the burnt offering. 10 When he finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him to greet him.

11 Samuel said, “What have you done?”

And Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come to the appointed assembly days, and the Philistines are gathering themselves together at Mikmash, 12 therefore I said, ‘The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not yet appeased the face of the Lord.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.”

13 Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. Truly now, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom will not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over His people, because you have not kept that which the Lord commanded you.”

15 Samuel arose, and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

Israel Unarmed

16 Now Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were with them, were staying in Gibeah of Benjamin, but the Philistines encamped in Mikmash. 17 Then raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual. 18 And another company turned the way to Beth Horon. And another company turned to the way of the border that looks to the Valley of Zeboyim toward the wilderness.

Acts 8:26-40

Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch

26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise up and go toward the south on the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. 27 So he rose up and went. And there was a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in command of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship. 28 He was returning, sitting in his chariot and reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go to this chariot and stay with it.”

30 Then Philip ran to him, and heard him read the book of Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?”

31 He said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

32 The passage of Scripture which he was reading was this:

“He was led as a sheep to slaughter;
    and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
    so He opened not His mouth.
33 In His humiliation justice was denied Him;
    who will speak of His generation?
    For His life is taken from the earth.”[a]

34 The eunuch said to Philip, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet speak, of himself or of someone else?” 35 Then Philip spoke, beginning with the same Scripture, and preached Jesus to him.

36 As they went on their way, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” He answered, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 And he commanded the chariot to halt. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away. And the eunuch saw him no more, and he went his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached the gospel in all the cities until he came to Caesarea.

Luke 23:13-25

Jesus Sentenced to Die(A)

13 Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You have brought this Man to me as one who incites the people. And truly, I, having examined Him before you, have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him. 15 No, neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing worthy of death has been done by Him. 16 I will therefore chastise Him and release Him.” 17 For he was obligated to release one man to them at the feast.

18 But they all cried out at once saying, “Take this Man away and release Barabbas to us!” 19 This man had been thrown in prison for an insurrection in the city and for murder.

20 Therefore Pilate spoke to them again, desiring to release Jesus. 21 But they cried out, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”

22 He said to them a third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found in Him no cause worthy of death. I will therefore chastise Him and release Him.”

23 But they insisted with loud voices, asking that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave the sentence as they demanded. 25 He released to them the man who was thrown in prison for insurrection and murder, whom they asked for. But he sentenced Jesus according to their will.
