Psalm 93

The Lord is King![a]

93 The Lord rules as King!
He wears royal power as his clothes.
His strength is like a belt round his body.[b]
So the world is safe and strong.
Nothing can shake it from its place.
You, Lord, have always ruled as King,
since before the beginning of time.
The floods of water have risen up, Lord.
They have risen with a loud noise.
Their waves beat against the land.[c]
But the Lord rules as King
    high above everything!
He rules over the powerful waves of the sea,
    with all their great noise!
Lord, your rules remain strong and true.
Your house will always be holy,
    because you are holy.

Psalm 96

Sing a new song![a]

96 Sing a new song to praise the Lord!
All the world,
    sing to praise the Lord!
Sing to praise the Lord's great name!
Every day, tell people the message
    that he has rescued us.
Tell the other nations that he is very great.
Tell all of them
about the great things that he has done.
Yes, the Lord is great!
Everyone should praise him as he deserves.
People should respect him with fear,
    more than all other gods.
All the other nations' gods are useless idols.
But the Lord made the heavens.
We see that he is a very great king.
His holy home is full of his power and his beauty.
You people of other nations,
recognize that the Lord is great and powerful.
Agree that the Lord's name is great.
Bring a gift to offer to him in his temple.
Worship the Lord,
    who is beautiful and holy.
Everyone on earth must shake with fear in front of him.
10 Tell all the nations,
    ‘The Lord rules as King!’
He has fixed the world in its place,
so that nothing can shake it.
He will judge all the people of the world fairly.
11 The earth and the sky
    should be happy!
The sea and everything in it
    should shout aloud!
12 The fields and all their crops should shout with joy!
Then all the trees in the forests will also sing
    because they are so happy!
13 They will sing to praise the Lord,
for he will come to judge the earth.
He is a fair judge.
He will judge all the people of the world with his truth.

Psalm 34

David wrote this song when he made the Philistine king think that he was crazy. He wanted the king to send him away.[a]

God is great![b]

34 I will always praise the Lord.
All the time I will sing to praise him.
I will boast that the Lord is great!
I want weak people to hear that.
I want them to be happy!
Join with me to tell people that the Lord is great!
Together we will make his name famous.
I asked the Lord to help me,
    and he answered me.
He saved me from everything that made me afraid.
People who trust the Lord to help them
    will be very happy.
Their faces will be bright,
and they will not be ashamed.
I was weak and helpless,
so I called out to the Lord.
The Lord heard me.
He saved me from all my troubles.
The Lord's angel is very near
to people who respect and obey the Lord.
He keeps them safe from danger.
Taste and see that the Lord is good!
God blesses people who turn to him
    to keep them safe.
All you people who belong to the Lord,
    continue to obey him.
People who respect the Lord
will have the things that they need.
10 Even young lions may not have food,
    so that they become hungry.
But people who trust the Lord for help
will receive every good thing that they need.

11 Children, come and listen to me!
I will teach you how to respect the Lord.
12 Do you want to live a good life?
Do you want your life to be long and happy?
13 If so, do not speak any evil words.
Do not tell lies to deceive people.
14 Do good things instead of evil things.
Try to bring peace into people's lives.
15 The Lord watches over righteous people.
He hears them when they call to him for help.
16 But the Lord turns against people who do evil things.
He causes everybody to forget that they ever lived.
17 The Lord hears his righteous people
    when they call for help.
He saves them from all their troubles.
18 When people are upset,
the Lord is near to them.
He saves those who feel very weak and upset.
19 Righteous people may often have troubles,
but the Lord saves them from every danger.
20 The Lord keeps them safe.
Not even one of their bones is broken!
21 Evil things will return to kill wicked people.
Whoever hates God's own people
    will receive punishment.
22 The Lord saves the lives of his servants.
Everyone who trusts the Lord to keep them safe
will not receive punishment as a guilty person.

Genesis 44:1-17

Joseph tests his brothers

44 Joseph told the servant who took care of his house, ‘Fill the men's bags. Give them as much food as their animals can carry. Put each man's money back in the top of his bag. Then take my silver cup and put it in the top of the youngest man's bag. Put it with the money that he brought to pay for his food.’ The servant did what Joseph had told him to do. When morning came, the men started their journey with their donkeys. They had travelled only a short way from the city. Then Joseph said to his servant, ‘Go now and follow those men. When you find them, say to them, “My master was kind to you. So why have you done this bad thing against us? You have taken my master's own special cup. It is the cup that he drinks from. He also uses it to find out about future things. You have done a very bad thing!” ’

So Joseph's servant followed the men and he reached them. He told them Joseph's message. But the brothers said to him, ‘Sir, why do you say these things? We are your servants. We would not do anything like that! When we found the money in our bags last time, we brought it back to you from Canaan. So we would never take valuable silver or gold things from your master's house. If any one of us has this silver cup, he must die. We others will become your slaves, sir.’ 10 The servant said, ‘What you say is fair. Whoever has the cup, will become my slave. The rest of you will go free.’

11 Each of the brothers quickly put his bag on the ground and opened it. 12 Then the servant began to look in the bags. He began with the oldest brother's bag and he finished with the youngest brother's bag. Then he found the cup in Benjamin's bag! 13 When this happened, all the brothers were very upset. They tore their clothes. Then they put their bags back on their donkeys. They returned to the city.

14 Joseph was still in his house when Judah and his brothers arrived. They threw themselves on the ground in front of Joseph. 15 Joseph said, ‘Why have you done this bad thing? You should have known about an important man like me. I can use magic to find out what people do.’ 16 Judah said, ‘We do not know what to say to you, my lord. We cannot say that we did not do this. God has shown that we are guilty of this sin. Now we are your slaves. We are all your slaves, as well as the one who had your cup in his bag.’

17 But Joseph said, ‘I would not do a thing like that! Only the man who had the cup will be my slave. The rest of you can return to your father. You may go as my friends.’

Romans 8:1-10

We can live by God's Spirit

Now we know this: God has forgiven those people who are united with Christ Jesus. God will never say that they are guilty. If you belong to Christ Jesus, God's Spirit has given you a new life. God's Spirit now rules in your life and he has made you free. Sin and death no longer have authority over you.

The Law that God gave to Moses could not make us free like that. We were too weak to obey his Law because we are human. But God has done what his Law could not do. He sent his own Son to become a person like us. His human body was like the body of people who do wrong things. God's Son died as a sacrifice to take away the punishment for our sins. In that way, God destroyed the power of sin over people who are weak and human. God did this so that we could become right with him. God's Law showed us how to be right with him. And now we can be right with God, if we live with God's Spirit as our guide. We do not do what our weak human thoughts want us to do.

Some people do what their weak human thoughts want them to do. They think about the things that will make themselves happy. But people who live with God's Spirit as their guide think about what will make God's Spirit happy. People who let their human thoughts rule them will die. But people who think about what God's Spirit wants will have life with God. They will have peace inside themselves. If our weak human thoughts rule us, we become God's enemies. People like that do not want to obey God's Law. They are not even able to obey it. People who let their human thoughts rule them cannot make God happy.

But you are not like that. You no longer obey your weak human thoughts. Instead, you obey God's Spirit as your guide. That is true if God's Spirit is really living in you. But if anyone does not have Christ's Spirit in them, that person does not belong to Christ. 10 But, if Christ lives in you, you have a new life because of his Spirit. Your body will die one day because of the power of sin. But your spirit lives because Christ has made you right with God.

John 5:25-29

25 I tell you this: A time will soon come when those who are dead in their spirits will hear the voice of the Son of God. Yes, it is that time already. Those people who hear that message will receive true life. 26 The Father himself can give people life. In the same way, he has given authority to the Son to give people life. 27 The Father has also given authority to the Son to judge people. That is because I am the Son of Man. 28 Do not be surprised by this. There will be a time when all the dead people will hear the Son's voice. 29 They will come out from under the ground. Those people who have done good things will rise from death and they will live with God. Those people who have done evil things will also rise from death. But they will rise so that God can punish them as guilty people.’
