Psalm 34

Psalm 34

A Psalm of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he departed.

I will bless the Lord at all times;
    His praise will continually be in my mouth.
My soul will make its boast in the Lord;
    the humble will hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
    and let us exalt His name together.

I sought the Lord, and He answered me,
    and delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and became radiant,
    and their faces are not ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard,
    and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord camps around those who fear Him,
    and delivers them.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
    blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.
Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints;
    for the ones who fear Him will not be in need.
10 The young lions are in want and suffer hunger,
    but the ones who seek the Lord will not lack any good thing.
11 Come, you children, listen to me;
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Who is the man who desires life,
    and loves a long life in order to see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil,
    and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Turn away from evil, and do good;
    seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and His ears are open to their cry.
16 The face of the Lord is against the ones doing evil,
    to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears,
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is near to the broken-hearted,
    and saves the contrite of spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
    but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 A righteous one keeps all his bones;
    not one of them is broken.

21 Evil will slay the wicked,
    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
22 The Lord redeems the life of His servants,
    and all who take refuge in Him will not be punished.

Isaiah 49:1-6

The Servant of the Lord

49 Listen to me, O coastlands,
    and pay attention, you peoples from afar.
The Lord called me from the womb;
    from the body of my mother He named me.
He has made my mouth like a sharp sword;
    in the shadow of His hand He has hidden me
and made me a select arrow;
    in His quiver He has hidden me.
He said to me, “You are My servant,
    Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”
Then I said, “I have labored in vain;
    I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity,
yet surely the justice due to me is with the Lord,
    and my reward with my God.”

Now says the Lord,
    who formed me from the womb to be His servant,
to bring Jacob back to Him,
    so that Israel might be gathered to Him
(yet I am honored in the eyes of the Lord,
    and my God is my strength),
He says,
“It is a light thing that you should be My servant
    to raise up the tribes of Jacob
    and to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also make you a light to the nations
    so that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”

1 Corinthians 4:1-16

The Ministry of the Apostles

Let a man so regard us as the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by man’s judgment. I do not even judge myself. For I know nothing against myself. Yet I am not justified by this. But He who judges me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time until the Lord comes. He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will reveal the purposes of the hearts. Then everyone will have commendation from God.

Brothers, I have figuratively applied these things to myself and to Apollos for your sakes, so that you may learn from us not to think of men above that which is written, and that not one of you would be arrogant for one against another. For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you received it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

Now you are full, now you are rich; you have begun reigning as kings without us, and I wish to God you reigned, so that we also might reign with you. For I think that God has exhibited us, the apostles, last, as if we were sentenced to death. For we have been made a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. 10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are honorable, but we are despised. 11 Even to this present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are poorly clothed and beaten and homeless. 12 We labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless. Being persecuted, we endure. 13 Being slandered, we encourage. We are made as the filth of the world, and are the refuse of all things to this day.

14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. 15 For if you were to have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers. In Christ Jesus I have become a father to you through the gospel. 16 So I implore you, be followers of me.

Psalm 96

Psalm 96(A)

O sing unto the Lord a new song;
    sing unto the Lord, all the earth!
Sing unto the Lord, bless His name;
    declare His salvation from day to day.
Proclaim His glory among the nations,
    His wonders among all peoples.

For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised;
    He is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are worthless,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
Honor and majesty are before Him;
    strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

Give unto the Lord, O families of the people,
    give unto the Lord glory and strength.
Give unto the Lord the glory due His name;
    bring an offering, and come into His courts.
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;
    tremble before Him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!
    Indeed, the world is established; it shall not be moved;
    He shall judge the peoples righteously.”

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;
    let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12     let the field be joyful, and all that is in it;
then all the trees of the forests shall rejoice
13     before the Lord, for He comes,
    for He comes to judge the earth.
He shall judge the world with righteousness
    and the peoples with His faithfulness.

Psalm 100

Psalm 100

A Psalm of thanksgiving.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth!
    Serve the Lord with gladness;
    come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord, He is God;
    it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
    we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
    and into His courts with praise;
    be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good; His mercy endures forever,
    and His faithfulness to all generations.

John 1:35-42

The First Disciples

35 Again, the next day John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 Looking upon Jesus as He walked, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?”

And they said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?”

39 Jesus said to them, “Come and see.”

So they came and saw where He stayed and remained with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means the Christ). 42 Then he brought him to Jesus.

When Jesus saw him, He said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
