Psalm 66

(A song and a psalm for the music leader.)

Shout Praises to God

Tell everyone on this earth
    to shout praises to God!
Sing about his glorious name.
    Honor him with praises.
Say to God, “Everything you do
    is fearsome,
and your mighty power makes
    your enemies come crawling.
You are worshiped by everyone!
We all sing praises to you.”

Come and see the fearsome things
    our God has done!
(A) When God made the sea dry up,
    our people walked across,
and because of him,
    we celebrated there.
His mighty power rules forever,
    and nothing the nations do
can be hidden from him.
    So don't turn against God.

All of you people,
come praise our God!
    Let his praises be heard.
God protects us from death
    and keeps us steady.

10 Our God, you tested us,
    just as silver is tested.
11 You trapped us in a net
    and gave us heavy burdens.
12 You sent war chariots
    to crush our skulls.
We traveled through fire
    and through floods,
but you brought us
    to a land of plenty.

13 I will bring sacrifices
    into your house, my God,
and I will do what I promised
14     when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice my best sheep
and offer bulls and goats
    on your altar.

16 All who worship God,
    come here and listen;
I will tell you everything
    God has done for me.
17 I prayed to the Lord,
    and I praised him.
18 If my thoughts had been sinful,
he would have refused
    to hear me.
19 But God did listen
    and answered my prayer.
20 Let's praise God!
He listened when I prayed,
    and he is always kind.

Isaiah 28:9-16

You drunken leaders
    are like babies!
How can you possibly understand
    or teach the Lord's message?
10 You don't even listen—
all you hear is senseless sound
    after senseless sound.[a]

11 (A) So, the Lord will speak
    to his people
in strange sounds
    and foreign languages.[b]
12 He promised you
perfect peace and rest,
    but you refused to listen.
13 Now his message to you
will be senseless sound
    after senseless sound.[c]
Then you will fall backwards,
    injured and trapped.

False Security Is Fatal

14 You rulers of Jerusalem
    do nothing but sneer;
now you must listen
    to what the Lord says.
15 (B) Do you think you have
an agreement with death
and the world of the dead?
Why do you trust in your lies
to keep you safe from danger
    and the mighty flood?

16 (C) And so the Lord says,
“I'm laying a firm foundation
    for the city of Zion.
It's a valuable cornerstone
    proven to be trustworthy;
no one who trusts it
    will ever be disappointed.

Ephesians 4:1-16

Unity with Christ

As a prisoner of the Lord, I beg you to live in a way that is worthy of the people God has chosen to be his own. (A) Always be humble and gentle. Patiently put up with each other and love each other. Try your best to let God's Spirit keep your hearts united. Do this by living at peace. All of you are part of the same body. There is only one Spirit of God, just as you were given one hope when you were chosen to be God's people. We have only one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. There is one God who is the Father of all people. Not only is God above all others, but he works by using all of us, and he lives in all of us.

Christ has generously divided out his gifts to us. (B) As the Scriptures say,

“When he went up
    to the highest place,
he led away many prisoners
    and gave gifts to people.”

When it says, “he went up,” it means that Christ had been deep in the earth. 10 This also means that the one who went deep into the earth is the same one who went into the highest heaven, so he would fill the whole universe.

11 Christ chose some of us to be apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers, 12 so his people would learn to serve and his body would grow strong. 13 This will continue until we are united by our faith and by our understanding of the Son of God. Then we will be mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him.[a]

14 We must stop acting like children. We must not let deceitful people trick us by their false teachings, which are like winds that toss us around from place to place. 15 Love should always make us tell the truth. Then we will grow in every way and be more like Christ, the head 16 (C) of the body. Christ holds it together and makes all of its parts work perfectly, as it grows and becomes strong because of love.

Psalm 116-117

When the Lord Saves You from Death

I love you, Lord!
    You answered my prayers.
You paid attention to me,
and so I will pray to you
    as long as I live.
Death attacked from all sides,
and I was captured
    by its painful chains.
But when I was really hurting,
I prayed and said, “Lord,
    please don't let me die!”

You are kind, Lord,
    so good and merciful.
You protect ordinary people,
and when I was helpless,
    you saved me
and treated me so kindly
that I don't need
    to worry anymore.

You, Lord, have saved
    my life from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling.
Now I will walk at your side
in this land of the living.
10 (A) I was faithful to you
    when I was suffering,
11 though in my confusion I said,
    “I can't trust anyone!”

12 What must I give you, Lord,
for being so good to me?
13 I will pour out an offering
    of wine to you,
and I will pray in your name
because you
    have saved me.
14 I will keep my promise to you
    when your people meet.
15 You are deeply concerned
when one of your loyal people
    faces death.

16 I worship you, Lord,
    just as my mother did,
and you have rescued me
    from the chains of death.
17 I will offer you a sacrifice
to show how grateful I am,
    and I will pray.
18 I will keep my promise to you
    when your people
19 gather at your temple
in Jerusalem.
    Shout praises to the Lord!

Come Praise the Lord

(B) All of you nations,
come praise the Lord!
    Let everyone praise him.
God's love for us is wonderful;
his faithfulness never ends.
    Shout praises to the Lord!

John 14:15-31

The Holy Spirit Is Promised

15 (A) Jesus said to his disciples:

If you love me, you will do as I command. 16 Then I will ask the Father to send you the Holy Spirit who will help[a] you and always be with you. 17 The Spirit will show you what is true. The people of this world cannot accept the Spirit, because they don't see or know him. But you know the Spirit, who is with you and will keep on living in you.

18 I won't leave you like orphans. I will come back to you. 19 In a little while the people of this world won't be able to see me, but you will see me. And because I live, you will live. 20 Then you will know I am one with the Father. You will know you are one with me, and I am one with you. 21 (B) If you love me, you will do what I have said, and my Father will love you. I will also love you and show you what I am like.

22 The other Judas, not Judas Iscariot,[b] then spoke up and asked, “Lord, what do you mean by saying that you will show us what you are like, but you will not show the people of this world?”

23 Jesus replied:

If anyone loves me, they will obey me. Then my Father will love them, and we will come to them and live in them. 24 But anyone who doesn't love me, won't obey me. What they have heard me say doesn't really come from me, but from the Father who sent me.

25 I have told you these things while I am still with you. 26 But the Holy Spirit will come and help[c] you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you.

27 I give you peace, the kind of peace only I can give. It isn't like the peace this world can give. So don't be worried or afraid.

28 You have already heard me say I am going and I will also come back to you. If you really love me, you should be glad I am going back to the Father, because he is greater than I am.

29 I am telling you this before I leave, so when it does happen, you will have faith in me. 30 I cannot speak with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. But he has no power over me. 31 I obey my Father, so everyone in the world might know that I love him.

It is time for us to go now.
