For the music director. A Psalm of David.
20 May the Lord answer you (A)on a day of trouble!
May the (B)name of the (C)God of Jacob [a]protect you!
2 May He send you help (D)from the sanctuary,
And (E)support you from Zion!
3 May He (F)remember all your meal offerings
And [b](G)accept your burnt offering! Selah
4 May He grant you your (H)heart’s desire
And (I)fulfill your whole plan!
5 [c]We will (J)sing for joy over your [d]victory,
And in the name of our God we will (K)set up our banners.
May the Lord (L)fulfill all your desires.
6 Now (M)I know that the Lord saves His anointed;
He will (N)answer him from His holy heaven
With the [e](O)saving strength of His right hand.
7 Some praise their chariots and some their (P)horses,
But (Q)we will praise the name of the Lord, our God.
8 They have (R)bowed down and fallen,
But we have (S)risen and stood upright.
9 [f](T)Save, Lord;
May the (U)King answer us on the day we call.
Praise for Salvation.
For the music director. A Psalm of David.
21 Lord, in Your strength the king will (V)be glad,
And in Your [g]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
2 You have (W)given him his heart’s desire,
And You have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah
3 For You (X)meet him with the blessings of good things;
You set a (Y)crown of pure gold on his head.
4 He asked for life from You,
You (Z)gave it to him,
(AA)Length of days forever and ever.
5 His (AB)glory is great through Your [h]salvation,
(AC)Splendor and majesty You place upon him.
6 For You make him [i]most (AD)blessed forever;
You make him joyful (AE)with the joy of Your presence.
7 For the king (AF)trusts in the Lord,
And through the faithfulness of the Most High (AG)he will not be shaken.
8 Your hand will (AH)find all your enemies;
Your right hand will find those who hate you.
9 You will make them (AI)as a fiery oven in the time [j]of your anger;
The Lord will (AJ)swallow them up in His wrath,
And (AK)fire will devour them.
10 You will eliminate their [k]descendants from the earth,
And their [l](AL)children from among the sons of mankind.
11 Though they [m](AM)intended evil against You
And (AN)devised a plot,
They will not succeed.
12 For You will (AO)make them turn their back;
You will take aim at their faces (AP)with Your bowstrings.
13 Be exalted, Lord, in Your strength;
We will (AQ)sing and praise Your power.
The Lord Gives Dominion to the King.
A Psalm of David.
110 (A)The Lord says to my Lord:
“(B)Sit at My right hand
Until I make (C)Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
2 The Lord will stretch out Your strong (D)scepter from Zion, saying,
“(E)Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
3 Your (F)people [a]will volunteer freely on the day of Your [b]power;
(G)In [c]holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
[d]Your youth are to You as the (H)dew.
4 (I)The Lord has sworn and will (J)not [e]change His mind,
“You are a (K)priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is (L)at Your right hand;
He [f]will (M)shatter kings in the (N)day of His wrath.
6 He will (O)judge among the nations,
He [g]will fill them with (P)corpses,
He [h]will (Q)shatter the [i]chief men over a broad country.
7 He will (R)drink from the brook by the wayside;
Therefore He will (S)lift up His head.
Thanksgiving for Rescue from Death.
116 (A)I love the Lord, because He (B)hears
My voice and my pleas.
2 Because He has (C)inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.
3 The (D)snares of death encompassed me
And the [a]terrors of [b]Sheol [c]came upon me;
I found distress and sorrow.
4 Then (E)I called upon the name of the Lord:
“Please, Lord, (F)save my [d]life!”
5 (G)Gracious is the Lord, and (H)righteous;
Yes, our God is (I)compassionate.
6 The Lord watches over (J)the simple;
I was (K)brought low, and He saved me.
7 Return to your (L)rest, my soul,
For the Lord has (M)dealt generously with you.
8 For You have (N)rescued my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from stumbling.
9 I shall walk before the Lord
In the [e](O)land of the living.
10 I (P)believed when I said,
“I am (Q)greatly afflicted.”
11 I (R)said in my alarm,
“(S)All people are liars.”
12 What shall I (T)repay to the Lord
For all His (U)benefits [f]to me?
13 I will lift up the (V)cup of salvation,
And (W)call upon the name of the Lord.
14 I will (X)pay my vows to the Lord;
May it be (Y)in the presence of all His people!
15 (Z)Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His godly ones.
16 O Lord, [g]I surely am (AA)Your slave,
I am Your slave, the (AB)son of Your female slave,
You have (AC)unfastened my restraints.
17 I will offer You (AD)a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And (AE)call upon the name of the Lord.
18 I will (AF)pay my vows to the Lord,
May it be in the presence of all His people,
19 In the (AG)courtyards of the Lord’s house,
In the midst of you, (AH)Jerusalem!
[h]Praise [i]the Lord!
A Psalm of Praise.
David Kills Goliath
31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they informed [a]Saul, and he [b]sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, “(A)May no one’s heart fail on account of him; (B)your servant will go and fight this Philistine!” 33 But Saul said to David, “(C)You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight him; for you are only a youth, while he has been a warrior since his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a sheep from the flock, 35 I went out after it and [c]attacked it, and (D)rescued the sheep from its mouth; and when it rose up against me, I grabbed it by its mane and struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has [d]killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 And David said, “(E)The Lord who saved me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, He will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” So Saul said to David, “(F)Go, and may the Lord be with you.” 38 Then Saul clothed David with his military attire and put a bronze helmet on his head, and outfitted him with armor. 39 And David strapped on his sword over his military attire and struggled at walking, for he had not trained with the armor. So David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, because I have not trained with them.” And David took them [e]off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, that is, in his shepherd’s pouch, and (G)his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
41 Then the Philistine came and approached David, with the shield-bearer in front of him. 42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, (H)he was contemptuous of him; for he was only a youth, and [f](I)reddish, with a handsome appearance. 43 So the Philistine said to David, “(J)Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And (K)the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine also said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh (L)to the birds of the sky and the [g]wild animals.” 45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a [h]saber, (M)but I come to you in the name of the Lord of armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I will strike you and remove your head from you. Then I will give the (N)dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth, (O)so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that this entire assembly may know that (P)the Lord does not save by sword or by spear; (Q)for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will hand you over to us!”
48 Then it happened, when the Philistine [i]came closer to meet David, that (R)David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the stone penetrated his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.
Peter Reports in Jerusalem
11 Now the apostles and (A)the brothers and sisters who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, [a](B)the Jewish believers took issue with him, 3 saying, “(C)You [b]went to [c]uncircumcised men and ate with them.” 4 But Peter began and explained at length to them (D)in an orderly sequence, saying, 5 “(E)I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw (F)a vision, an [d]object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from the sky; and it came to where I was, 6 and I stared at it and was thinking about it, and I saw the four-footed animals of the earth, the wild animals, the [e]crawling creatures, and the birds of the sky. 7 I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; [f]kill and eat.’ 8 But I said, ‘By no means, Lord, for nothing [g]unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ 9 But a voice from heaven answered a second time, ‘(G)What God has cleansed, no longer [h]consider unholy.’ 10 This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into the sky. 11 And behold, at that moment three men who had been sent to me from (H)Caesarea came up to the house where we were staying. 12 (I)And the Spirit told me to go with them (J)without [i]misgivings. (K)These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 And he reported to us how he had seen the angel [j]standing in his house, and saying, ‘Send some men to Joppa and have Simon, who is also called Peter, brought here; 14 and he will speak (L)words to you by which you will be saved, you and (M)all your household.’ 15 And as I began to speak, (N)the Holy Spirit fell upon them just (O)as He did upon us at the beginning. 16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘(P)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized [k]with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 Therefore, if (Q)God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, (R)who was I that I could [l]stand in God’s way?” 18 When they heard this, they [m]quieted down and (S)glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has also granted to the Gentiles the (T)repentance that leads to life.”
Jesus Preaches in Galilee
14 (A)Now after John was [a]taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, [b](B)preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “(C)The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; (D)repent and [c]believe in the gospel.”
16 (E)As He was going along the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will have you become fishers of people.” 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 19 And going on a little farther, He saw [d]James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, [e]who were also in the boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and went away [f]to follow Him.
21 (F)They *went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath Jesus (G)entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 And (H)they were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “(I)What [g]business do You have with us, Jesus [h]of (J)Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are: (K)the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 After throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. 27 And they were all (L)amazed, so they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding region of Galilee.
