Psalm 97-98

Psalm 97

The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice;
    let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and darkness are all around Him;
    righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
A fire goes before Him
    and burns up His enemies all around.
His lightning bolts light up the world;
    the earth sees and shakes.
The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the Lord of the earth.
The heavens declare His righteousness,
    and all the peoples see His glory.

All who serve graven images are ashamed,
    who boast in worthless idols;
    worship Him, all you gods.

Zion hears and is glad,
    and the daughters of Judah rejoice
    because of Your judgments, O Lord.
For You, O Lord, are Most High above all the earth;
    You are exalted far above all gods.
10 You who love the Lord, hate evil!
    He preserves the lives of His devoted ones;
    He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 Light goes out for the righteous,
    and gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
    and give thanks at the memory of His holy name.

Psalm 98

A Psalm.

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song,
    for He has done marvelous deeds!
His right hand and His holy arm
    have accomplished deliverance.
The Lord has made known His salvation;
    His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered His mercy
    and His faithfulness toward the house of Israel;
all the ends of the earth have seen
    the deliverance of our God.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth;
    break out in loud songs, and sing praises.
Sing unto the Lord with the harp,
    with the harp and the sound of melody,
with trumpets and sound of the horn;
    make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it,
    the world and those who live in it;
let the rivers clap their hands;
    let the hills be joyful together
before the Lord,
    for He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He will judge the world,
    and the peoples with justice.

Proverbs 8:22-30

22 “The Lord possessed me in the beginning of His way,
    before His works of old.
23 I was set up from everlasting,
    from the beginning, before there was ever an earth.
24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth,
    when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled,
    before the hills I was brought forth;
26 while as yet He had not made the earth or the fields,
    or the first dust of the world.
27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
    when He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 when He established the clouds above,
    when He strengthened the fountains of the deep,
29 when He gave to the sea His decree,
    that the waters should not pass His commandment,
when He appointed the foundations of the earth,
30     then I was by Him, as one brought up with Him;
and I was daily His delight,
    rejoicing always before Him,

John 13:20-35

20 Truly, truly I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me. And he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

Jesus Foretells His Betrayal(A)

21 When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.”

22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom He spoke. 23 Now there was leaning against Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples whom Jesus loved. 24 Therefore Simon Peter motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

25 Leaning back against Jesus’ bosom, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 After receiving the piece of bread, Satan entered him.

Then Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew why He said this to him. 29 Since Judas had the moneybox, some thought that Jesus said to him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 Having received the piece of bread, he then left immediately. And it was night.

The New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus then said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and in Him God is glorified. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will immediately glorify Him.

33 “Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek Me. And as I said to the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’

34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Psalm 145

Psalm 145

A Psalm of Praise. Of David.

I will exalt you, my God and King,
    and I will bless Your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless You,
    and I will praise Your name forever and ever.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and His greatness is unfathomable.
One generation shall praise Your works to another
    and shall declare Your mighty acts.
I will speak of the glorious honor of Your majesty
    and of Your wondrous works.
They shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts,
    and I will declare Your greatness.
They shall abundantly declare the fame of Your great goodness
    and shall sing of Your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion,
    slow to anger, and great in mercy.

The Lord is good to all,
    and His compassion is over all His works.
10 All Your works shall praise You, O Lord,
    and Your godly ones shall bless You.
11 They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom
    and talk of Your power,
12 to make known to people His mighty acts,
    and the glorious majesty of His kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
    and Your dominion endures throughout all generations.

14 The Lord upholds all who fall,
    and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all wait upon You,
    and You give them their food in due season.
16 You open Your hand
    and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

17 The Lord is righteous in all His ways
    and loving in all His works.
18 The Lord is near to all those who call upon Him,
    to all who call upon Him in truth.
19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
    He also will hear their cry and will save them.
20 The Lord preserves all those who love Him,
    but all the wicked He will destroy.

21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord,
    and let all people bless His holy name
    forever and ever.

1 John 5:1-12

Overcoming the World

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the one born of the Father. By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is born of God overcomes the world, and the victory that overcomes the world is our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world, but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The Witness Concerning the Son

This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. It is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. There are three who testify in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and the three are one. There are three that testify on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are toward the one.[a] If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God which He has given concerning His Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this witness in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he does not believe the testimony that God gave about His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
