Book of Common Prayer
The Lord’s Wonderful Works in Behalf of Israel.
105 Oh (A)give thanks to the Lord, (B)call upon His name;
(C)Make known His deeds among the peoples.
2 Sing to Him, (D)sing praises to Him;
[a](E)Speak of all His [b]wonders.
3 [c]Glory in His holy name;
Let the (F)heart of those who seek the Lord be glad.
4 Seek the Lord and (G)His strength;
(H)Seek His face continually.
5 Remember His [d](I)wonders which He has done,
His marvels and the (J)judgments [e]uttered by His mouth,
6 O seed of (K)Abraham, His servant,
O sons of (L)Jacob, His (M)chosen ones!
7 He is the Lord our God;
His (N)judgments are in all the earth.
8 He has (O)remembered His covenant forever,
The word which He commanded to a (P)thousand generations,
9 The (Q)covenant which He made with Abraham,
And His (R)oath to Isaac.
10 Then He (S)confirmed it to Jacob for a statute,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 Saying, “(T)To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the [f](U)portion of your inheritance,”
12 When they were only a (V)few men in number,
Very few, and (W)strangers in it.
13 And they wandered about from nation to nation,
From one kingdom to another people.
14 He (X)permitted no man to oppress them,
And He (Y)reproved kings for their sakes:
15 “(Z)Do not touch My anointed ones,
And do My prophets no harm.”
16 And He (AA)called for a famine upon the land;
He (AB)broke the whole staff of bread.
17 He (AC)sent a man before them,
Joseph, who was (AD)sold as a slave.
18 They afflicted his (AE)feet with fetters,
[g]He himself was laid in irons;
19 Until the time that his (AF)word came to pass,
The word of the Lord [h](AG)tested him.
20 The (AH)king sent and released him,
The ruler of peoples, and set him free.
21 He (AI)made him lord of his house
And ruler over all his possessions,
22 To [i]imprison his princes [j](AJ)at will,
That he might teach his elders wisdom.
23 (AK)Israel also came into Egypt;
Thus Jacob (AL)sojourned in the land of Ham.
24 And He (AM)caused His people to be very fruitful,
And made them stronger than their adversaries.
25 He (AN)turned their heart to hate His people,
To (AO)deal craftily with His servants.
26 He (AP)sent Moses His servant,
And (AQ)Aaron, whom He had chosen.
27 They [k](AR)performed His wondrous acts among them,
And miracles in the land of Ham.
28 He (AS)sent darkness and made it dark;
And they did not (AT)rebel against His words.
29 He (AU)turned their waters into blood
And caused their fish to die.
30 Their land swarmed with (AV)frogs
Even in the (AW)chambers of their kings.
31 He spoke, and there came a (AX)swarm of flies
And (AY)gnats in all their territory.
32 He [l]gave them (AZ)hail for rain,
And flaming fire in their land.
33 He (BA)struck down their vines also and their fig trees,
And shattered the trees of their territory.
34 He spoke, and (BB)locusts came,
And young locusts, even without number,
35 And ate up all vegetation in their land,
And ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He also (BC)struck down all the firstborn in their land,
The (BD)first fruits of all their vigor.
37 Then He brought them out with (BE)silver and gold,
And among His tribes there was not one who stumbled.
38 Egypt was (BF)glad when they departed,
For the (BG)dread of them had fallen upon them.
39 He spread a (BH)cloud for a [m]covering,
And (BI)fire to illumine by night.
40 [n]They (BJ)asked, and He brought (BK)quail,
And satisfied them with the [o](BL)bread of heaven.
41 He opened the [p]rock and (BM)water flowed out;
[q]It ran in the dry places like a river.
42 For He (BN)remembered His holy word
With Abraham His servant;
43 And He brought forth His people with joy,
His chosen ones with a joyful (BO)shout.
44 He (BP)gave them also the lands of the [r]nations,
That they (BQ)might take possession of the fruit of the peoples’ labor,
45 So that they might (BR)keep His statutes
And observe His laws,
[s]Praise [t]the Lord!
8 (A)Blow the horn in (B)Gibeah,
The trumpet in Ramah.
Sound an alarm at Beth-aven:
“(C)Behind you, Benjamin!”
9 Ephraim will become a (D)desolation in the (E)day of rebuke;
Among the tribes of Israel I (F)declare what is sure.
10 The princes of Judah have become like those who (G)move a boundary;
On them I will (H)pour out My wrath (I)like water.
11 Ephraim is (J)oppressed, crushed in judgment,
(K)Because he was determined to [a]follow man’s command.
12 Therefore I am like a (L)moth to Ephraim
And like rottenness to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
And Judah his [b]wound,
Then Ephraim went to (M)Assyria
And sent to [c](N)King Jareb.
But he is (O)unable to heal you,
Or to cure you of your [d]wound.
14 For I will be (P)like a lion to Ephraim
And like a young lion to the house of Judah.
(Q)I, even I, will tear to pieces and go away,
I will carry away, and there will be (R)none to deliver.
15 I will go away and return to My place
Until they [e](S)acknowledge their guilt and seek My face;
In their affliction they will earnestly (T)seek Me.
The Response to God’s Rebuke
6 “(U)Come, let us return to the Lord.
For (V)He has torn us, but (W)He will heal us;
He has [f]wounded us, but He will (X)bandage us.
2 “He will (Y)revive us after two days;
He will (Z)raise us up on the third day,
That we may live before Him.
3 “So let us (AA)know, let us press on to know the Lord.
His (AB)going forth is as certain as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the (AC)rain,
Like the spring rain watering the earth.”
4 What shall I do with you, O (AD)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O Judah?
For your [g]loyalty is like a (AE)morning cloud
And like the dew which goes away early.
5 Therefore I have (AF)hewn them in pieces by the prophets;
I have slain them by the (AG)words of My mouth;
And the judgments on you are like the light that goes forth.
6 For (AH)I delight in loyalty (AI)rather than sacrifice,
And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Paul Seized in the Temple
27 When (A)the seven days were almost over, (B)the Jews from [a](C)Asia, upon seeing him in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd and laid hands on him, 28 crying out, “Men of Israel, come to our aid! (D)This is the man who preaches to all men everywhere against our people and the Law and this place; and besides he has even brought Greeks into the temple and has (E)defiled this holy place.” 29 For they had previously seen (F)Trophimus the (G)Ephesian in the city with him, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple. 30 Then all the city was provoked, and [b]the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they (H)dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. 31 While they were seeking to kill him, a report came up to the [c]commander of the (I)Roman [d]cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. 32 At once he (J)took along some soldiers and centurions and ran down to them; and when they saw the [e]commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the [f]commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered him to be (K)bound with (L)two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done. 34 But among the crowd (M)some were shouting one thing and some another, and when he could not find out the [g]facts because of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into (N)the barracks. 35 When he got to (O)the stairs, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the [h]mob; 36 for the multitude of the people kept following them, shouting, “(P)Away with him!”
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
6 (A)Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples (B)were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what (C)is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 3 And Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read (D)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, 4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [a]consecrated bread which (E)is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” 5 And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6 (F)On another Sabbath He entered (G)the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there [b]whose right hand was withered. 7 The scribes and the Pharisees (H)were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him. 8 But He (I)knew [c]what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and [d]come forward!” And he got up and [e]came forward. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 After (J)looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with [f]rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.
